The sugar in soft drink is refined and processed. The body abosrbs it quickly, hence you get a spike in energy then a quick fall. If you dont burn off this energy is a short time after you drink it it gets stored as fat via glycolysis. .

whaaaat? it doesn't get stored as fat unless you are going over your calorie maintenance consistently, even then you'd have to consistently go over calorie maintenace in order to gain fat

myself and others have all dropped bodyfat % while drinking one or more cans of high sugar soft drink every day including energy drinks like red bull, why? because we kept track of our carb, protein, fat (calorie) intake and made sure we didn't take in too much.

the amount of broscience in this thread is mindblowing

what next? beer makes you fat?

He is right.

Too many broscientists ITT. End of the day all that matters is calories in vs calories out. If you eat at a calorie surplus, depending on how great a surplus, will determine how much weight you gain. Vica versa, if you eat at a caloric deficit, you will lose weight.

Sugar does not make you fat, fat does not make you fat....excess calories is what makes you fat. And yes a calorie comes from protein, carbs and fat. So to say sugar makes you fats is just plain stupid.

Do you guys even lift?

Being 'in shape' and being 'healthy' are not mutually inclusive - why do so many people not realize this?

Because 'you people' keep relating everything back to 'weight gain' - when a lot of us are talking about weight gain as one facet of general health.

It was more a response to the general idea that weight gain was what really mattered, and not overall health

I'm pretty sure it's on both.

lol i think you got lost, there might be another conversation in this thread but the one we were having was discussing the myth that sugar makes people gain weight

hence why crozan thought you accidently quoted him instead of someone else

What i find weird is you guys saying that sugar doesn't make you fat, calories do. Yet sugar contains calories.

I really don't get it. You're relying on a made up word we use to explain weight gain just because it isn't the generic word for 'sugar'.

Calories make you fat, sugar contains calories.

EAting too much sugar is an easy way to get fat.

As for the "broscience" - what a load of crap, jackfrost and miqar baqfil have contributed good posts in this thread and all you offer is "do you guys even lift*"

*by the way, thanks for that it made me laugh.

edit: just realised the lifting call came from someone else - apologies.

that post is so full of fail nick apart from one part which i'll finish up on

yes sugar contains calories, so does almost every food.

what made up word? what generic word for sugar?

calories don't make you fat, eating too many calories on a consistent basis will make you fat

they were posting broscience, they were backing the theory that sugar will make you fat, i've known since before i even got to high school that sugar does not make you fat.

also i never posted anything about asking if you lift

eating too much sugar is an easy way to gain fat - TRUE! TOO MUCH SUGAR. read it over and over, TOO MUCH.
like you said, sugar has calories, consume too many calories and you gain weight.

The point people are making is that soft drinks (and other sugary goodness) are essentially zero-benefit kilojoules.

We get two benefits from the food products we consume - energy and nutrients. Most of us don't need more energy, but we ARE massively nutrient-deficient. What with office work and motorised transport and so forth, Western lifestyles are incredibly sedentary. Even if you exercise regularly, it is extremely difficult to consume all the foods that you need in order to get adequate nutrients without being left with a surplus of energy.

Therefore, most of us need to manage our dietary intake so that the foods that provide us with energy are also kicking goals in the nutrients department. So if I eat 500kj of fruit, I am getting vitamin C and anti-oxidants and soluble dietary fibre and all sorts of other goodies as well. If I drink 500kj of soft drink I am basically getting a sugar hit - and sugar is one of the few things that most people already get plenty of in their diet. Therefore I either forgo the nutrients, or I consume more food (and therefore more energy) with the nutrients I need.

Unless you are exercising like a mofo or forgoing nutrients you should be getting, all sugary drinks are doing is putting extra energy into a body that already has a surplus of energy, for no additional benefit. That's why people say sugary drinks make you fat. For the vast majority of us in the general population, they do.

Yeah, if you're a uni student with no fulltime job who is lifting like crazy then you are probably struggling to consume enough energy to keep up with your exercise regime anyway. In that case, soft drinks aren't going to make you put on weight. But then, in my experience most mates of mine who lift are so obsessed with protein and carbs and energy in/out that they actually have a pretty poor (nutrient-deficient) diet. They'd still be better off putting down the energy drinks and eating a few more serves of fruits, vegetables and dairy for the same kilojoule input.
