What if the dogs DON'T land a tall forward?

I would love to see Lake at FF / CHF for us however (as posters have said previously) there is just no-one at the moment to replace him down back with the strength, ability and run that he currently provides.

I remember O'Shea being touted as our next FB and the next Lake (Harris back then), how's his development coming along? I did notice some posters thought he might be delisted this year?

The other thing is I don't believe Tiller is a FB option, personally, I have always seen him as a leading FF, and think he is best suited to that role. However when we picked up Welsh (who I don't care what people say, he had a major impact this year) I think that role was filled especially with Welsh being a much better contested mark.

Even still I would like to see Tiller tried at FF a bit more next year (especially if Williams and Everitt are in the side). Although there is merit in Everitt tried as a CHF (needs to get bigger though).

You obviously didnt see the semi final against Sydney then!

Ummm...errrr...yeah..., both his games against the Swannies & Geelong were very good.

But i stand by my comments of not thinking the backline is as good as it has to be just yet, Everitt's coming off his second year blues, and lets all hope Williams can stay on the park.

IF Lake was to be played up forward, it would have to start from pre season, every training drill would have to have him as a forward etc etc, and not some half baked attempt.

He spent quite a bit of time up forward actually, think he may have kicked a few bags of goals as well in the Willy ressies.

How about we play Grant up forward? Pleanty of skinny kids have played well before. Let's give him a go.

Geelong won a flag with a great backline, great midfield and so-so forward line. Hawthorn won a flag with a great forward line, great midfield and so-so backline. West Coast won a flag with a great midfield, so-so backline and so-so forward line.

For the dogs to be a force and a tilt at the flag, I don't think we need to tick every box. We already have a very good midfield, if tommy can stay on the park, and with Lake, Morris and Shaggy, we are very close to having a great backline. That with our existing forward options and the further development of Everitt, Tiller and Grant and that could just be enough.

A Key forward would be great, but in reality only one of those come around every 2-3 years and every club wants one.

My thoughts exactly!

The most likely scenario is that we won't land a tall forward, in fact, it is highly probable we won't. We will be relying on Minson and then guys like Cordy, Grant, Boumann etc. to hopefully develop.

I still believe Minson can develop into a real force up forward. He is still young, attacks it ferociously, is a good kick and the only thing that has let him down is weak hands on the footy. This will come though and I don't think he is too far away at all from being a huge force.

Somehow i dont hink so:rolleyes: He couldnt kick straight to save his life.

Would like to see the doggies to win a flag. It would have been great for Scotty West and Brad Johnson to go out on but its not to be.

Agree that you have got some good players and just missing a couple to round off the team. But you lot are not far off it and only lost it towards the end with some inconsistency.

Hawthorn has shown the way with drafting good kids and I think the doggies need to keep with this policy.

I think Grant is not too far away and has real talent and my view would be get Thompson/Hall for the year to allow Grant, Cordy, Minson etc to further develop and some depth. Maybe Campbell provided he is cheap.

Then draft majority of talls this time around and hope that there is a real gem in one of them.

Don't get me wrong, you have good intentions so I don't want to scare you off.

But this quote here, it just isn't that simple. You can draft as many talls as you want but there is no guarantee they will become players. You go through all the drafts in the past few years and pick the two talls still available to the Dogs at the time who rated highly and went after our picks.

In fact I've done this before.

And for those suggesting we should do a 'Hawthorn' like draft and just take the 2 best KPP's with out first two live picks this is what would have happened since 2003.

Our picks on the far left, KPP player and their pick in brackets, who we got)

2003
1. Kepler Bradley(#6) (Cooney)
4. Ryan Murphy (#12) (Ray)

2004
3. Buddy Franklin (#5) (Griffen)
6. Tom Williams (#6) (Williams)

2005
11. Max Bailey (#18) (Higgins)
27. Trent West (#31) (Addison)

2006
11. Andresj Everitt (#11) (Everitt)
45. Garland/Schofield) (#46/#50) (Stack)

2007
5. Jarrod Grant (#5) (Grant)
19. (?) Matthew Westhoff(#33) (Callan Ward)

Lose:
Cooney
Ray
Griffen
Higgins
Addison
Stack
Ward

Gain:
K. Bradley
Ryan Murphy
Franklin
Bailey
Trent West
Garland/Schofield

Thanks for going to the effort, we'll see how they all go after a few years, but right now I am comfortable with what we have picked up. At the end of the day there just aren't that many good talls/forwards to come out of each draft. I'd be stupid not to concede that the Hawks have done exceptionally well with Roughead and Franklin, but not many drafts pan out for clubs the way that one did for them, despite a clubs best efforts.

Teams that have good KPP now have had as many misses or thereabouts as we have had, and in a lot of cases their KPP have come from trades and F/S. It may not seem like it now but I think we are headed in the right direction. Minson IMO did reasonably for a development player in his first year as a forward. If he can increase is goal kicking by 50-70% over the next two years then at the age of 24 we may have a pretty good, versatile player on our hands.

With any luck we can get a reasonable player across the line tomorrow who can give us something for a year or so while Cordy, Grant and Bouman develop.

Agree with you when you put it that way but you now have a really good midfield and running players. In my view you guys are missing three players to get you to a GF and then having a crack.

Key forward, tall strong CHB to back Lake and a ruckman. Ottans thrashed your ruck in the last game.
