It is a very significant and unfortunate part of our clubs history Dave. Alan Macalister's response to the Nicky Winmar incident. You should look it up.Never heard of that Story
On the Draft Coverge Micky McGuane said we should Draft Glass

I was young when it happened. I saw the 'ritual' on TV. I believed it. I liked magic as a kid. And we entered the darkest period Collingwood has had in my time alive. Irrational as it sounds, I wish MaCallister had shut up. I blame him more than I blame Tony Shaw for the second half of the 90's. Weird, huh?It is a very significant and unfortunate part of our clubs history Dave. Alan Macalister's response to the Nicky Winmar incident. You should look it up.
Probably. Would have extended his career games by going to The Saints on potential. Did take a nice grab one year. At least he has that.So he ONLY played that many because he was a Pick 3?
That he is, but I don't see the argument for 2002. 2007, on the other hand, sure - but even then he probably would've been played through the midfield with the form Cloke, Rocca and Rusling had been in.I get your point, there is a lot of merit to it especially for specific games, but I just can't get past what Pavlich would have brought to the table overall. Game on game on game.
Bona fide elite level talent.
We would be just better for him, superior side, in my view by quite a margin.
Not 2003, just can't have that one.
Brisbane so strong.
Four more flags? (Or three more as we won 2010) Why not?
Malthouse would hence forth be in Norm Smith category level (6 flags).
They'd be no changeover I'm guessing either.
Here it is...Says I don't have Permission to Read it
bucks was the only star player and he was done at the end of 07. and we had a couple of others retire that freed up some salary. You have to factor in which star player (or players) we would lose to recruit Brown on such a big salary. You can't just add him and expect the other 21 players to be the same
Darren Milane died later that year too. Here it is...
I was reading the thread about football ironies and coincidences and I remembered a strange occurrence from the past.
Everyone used to joke about the Colliwobbles, the curse that plagued Collingwood, year after year, when they would dominate the season, then crumble during September. Nearly every year it seemed, they would find new and interesting ways to lose Grand Finals.
Then finally in 1990, after 32 years, they put the Colliwobbles to bed and won the premiership. "No more Colliwobbles!" their fans yelled and celebrated long and hard. They were on top of the world, cock-a-hoop, much like Geelong right now and their president Allan "Dial A Quote" McAlister thought he was the king.
The rest of the football world had to stoicly endure this new-found Magpie arrogance. After three rounds of 1991 season, Collingwood were 2-1, 5th on the ladder and hot favourites to go back to back.
But all that changed in round 4. St Kilda defeated Collingwood at Victoria Park and Nicky Winmar famously stuck it up the Magpie racists when he lifted his jumper and pointed to his skin as he walked from field.
Immediately afterwards, Allan McAlister put his foot in his mouth when he said, "As long as Nicky Winmar behaves well, like a white person, then all the people at Collingwood will show him respect"
There was a furore. People everywhere attacked the Collingwood Prez. Aboriginal leaders called for an apology, which McAlister resisted against, believing he was misquoted or misunderstood. This dragged out for two weeks. It was big news at the time.
An indigenous tribal elder made front page headlines when he "pointed the bone" and placed a curse on the Magpies. People thought it was a bit of a joke, even though the elder was deadly serious and not the crackpot that many believed.
And from that moment, things just fell apart for Collingwood. Their season unravelled. They lost their next six games in a row. It seemed like every week, 3 or 4 of their players succumbed to injury: soft tissue, knees, broken bones, you name it. In the blink of an eye, their season became a nightmare. The Magpies tumbled from the top 4 to the bottom 4 (4th to 12th) and the football world rejoiced in their misery.
Belatedly their President made an apology and the curse was lifted. But the damage had been done. Despite storming home to win 9 of their next 10 games, Collingwood missed out on the the finals by half a game.
True story.
2007 needed a ruckman not an injured and over the hill Buckley. Put a ruckman into the 2007 PF side and we had tha forwards to win with or without Rocca. MM's greatest folly was his ruck strategy until the succession plan made him desperate. What IF Bucks and Rocca did not get Injured in the last Qtr of 2007 PF vs Cats. Would we won or still lost?

IF we had a ruckman...So better one is that IF Fraser Played in the PF result might been Different?
IF we had a ruckman...
Fraser never made it as a ruckmen. Had he done so we woudln't have needed Jolly later on. MM wanted his ruckman to be a tall midfielder. It was actual ruck work that Ottens killed us with. A few key centre clearances might have made all the difference and maybe Fraser could have done a better job but in reality he probably wasn't the body to matchup with Ottens. One clearance comes to mind which sank us. Ottens got the ball to Ablett in the last Q for a decisive goal. Fraser would have been a better option than Bryan. Whether he would have been good enough is debatable but possible.
To be frank, we could list umpteen times an inury has hurt us in a GF. The real issue has always been list quality and depth. That's why the injuries or circumstances have been telling in the first place. The only 2 times we had the requisite quality and depth we went and shot ourselves in the foot thereafter. The 1990 and 2010 list should both have been multiple premiership lists with the right maintenance and club culture. Mathews learned from what he observed in 1990.
My biggest what if is John Greening. He doesn't get bashed by O'dea and we have a different 1970s. I doubt we win the spoon in 1976. Maybe Hafey never comes to Collingwood in 1977. If the years to 1976 play out similarly and Hafey does coah us we probably win the 1977 GF with or without Carman. Maybe a veteran Greening gets us over the line in 1979.
Pretty sure Richards took that contest, it still vividly haunts me.IF we had a ruckman...

What on earth are you on????? We didn't struggle against them, we probably had the best record against them in that period? They were just a terrific football side that more often that not was better than everyone else.Guess there been stuff all Rucks around in 2008 when he was the Victorian Ruckman in the All-Star Game.
I always felt Otten was the Major Reason why we Struggled vs Cats back in there Era of Dominance
