Serious question - what actually is democracy?

Right now we have the following;
  1. Netanyahu has just won his third election this year notwithstanding he is facing criminal charges for corruption.
  2. Grab em' by the pussy is the president of the USA and will be re-elected again this year notwithstanding he has been impeached for what would have once been considered treason. 6 of his staff have also been imprisoned during his first term.
  3. We have our very own Scotty from Marketing who shows absolute disdain and contempt for any democratic process. In particular any media scrutiny, transparency of government or any due process is completely dismissed.
So in light of this, what is democracy?

ScoMo was democratically elected by a majority vote, so... that.

And for the next three years he is answerable to no one and nothing?

Well he's answerable to his party, but both major parties have a general disdain for the unwashed masses, yet we keep voting for them.

Personally I'd rather something more akin to Switzerland's system where we could go vote annually on major policy proposals from various sources / parties which the Government then spends the next year implementing. That somewhat limits the way current parties go about looking for swing electorates and talking point issues instead of long-term infrastructure type projects.

But to suggest we don't live in a democracy because a democratically elected political party has a tossbag for a leader is a bit of a stretch.

Not the fantasy lefty utopia of China where your life is forfeit if you don't buy into the groupthink?

He is answerable to the voters?

Leaving trump to one side morisson's main issue is giving money from sporting grants to less deserving sporting organisations. Now there are real reasons why this is wrong; But where the next road gets built, railway station or school is all about politics as are the sports grants.

No one in the government is accused of profiting from this, this isn't Labor for decades in NSWs, is it?

You get what you vote for, the public service left to their own devices rarely if at all drive better outcomes.

In short what are you complaining about?

I'm led to believe that being arrested for trying to eat a succulent Chinese meal is democracy manifest.

But seriously, democracy is when a s**t leader gets voted in by the people and we all still stick by the rules and let them lead for the period they were voted in for. It doesn't get more democratic than that.

Grab em by the pussy was elected in by the people after the democratic rigged the election and have tried to reinvent the wheel by having trump impeachment as they still cannot accept the fact that they lost!

by all accounts trump is more popular than ever and will roll for an easy win next election voted by the people!

that is democracy!
It isn’t what the idiot left want it to be

All the impediments in Scomo's way, preventing him from getting things through the house of reps and the senate. Democracy's in the checks to power that simply are not there in other systems, allowing a diverse section of the population to object to undesirable laws.

I can't speak for the other two.

Its true. We live in a representative democracy. A failed one, but one nonetheless.
The really worrying thing is that Morrison, or at least the frivolous selfish bogan tosspot image he took to the last election, may actually be representative of the nation.
