Gary WHO?
He was hand picked by his mate Blighty (who had also installed him at the Cats) and given a dual premiership side which he then quickly coached into a gutter.

Ayres coached Adelaide from 2000 until 2004. When told he would not continue as coach for the 2005 season, Ayres quit midseason. Though he had been given the opportunity to stay for the rest of Season 2004, he told the Adelaide board that if he could not coach the following year, he would leave immediately. He then walked out of the club's office without shaking hands or responding to media enquiries. He left Adelaide with a 55–52 win-loss ratio.
Tosser of great proportions.
Worst mistake we ever made to give him the reins of the club.

The gutter that was regular finals appearances and a prelim final?
Yeah. Thank god the guy we replaced him with improved on that big time.

WTF?
2000 - 11th (after being 13th in 1999 - "the worst premiership hangover in history" under Blighty)
2001 - 8th (limped into finals and lost elim final by 68pts in a woeful game to Blues)
2002 - 3rd after H&A and smashed by Bears in qual final by 71pts and lost to Pies in Prelim
2003 - won pre-season, high favorite for flag but lost semi to Bears
2004 - Gaz spits dummy and leaves in Rd 13 (Craigy takes over)
2005 - Craigy takes us to minor premiership and prelim at home
Ayres had a great team handed to him on a plate and his coaching record does not read well. Especially after Craigy is able to get Gaz's team up to a prelim in 2005.

So, finals 3 years out of five, and a peak of a prelim final loss?
Replaced by a guy who peaked at prelim final loss.
If you're going to try and lessen Ayres achievements based upon the team he was left, you need to acknowledge that Craig was left a good team.
