What Type of Player Will We Draft?

Gilly, what's the name of the Northen Knights player who was overlooked last year and tested well for pace?

I think he's Greek.

David Zaharakis.......very quick, one big question mark last year was over his kicking. I haven't had a chance to see the Knights yet this year, but he has been in their best the first two weeks. Last week he had about 32 touches and his kicking efficiency was right up on last year. A lot of footy to be played but at this stage I wouldn't be surprised to see a club take a punt on him with a later pick. Champs from will be critical as he will test well at draft camp.

I think that's a friend of my cousin. Will check back when i confirm.

I just read the Draft Thread and it got me thinking. Assuming we don't finish bottom and are not obligated to draft the "best player" in the draft, will we draft the best midfielder, forward or back available? At the start of this year most of us would be thinking a backman would be the thing we lacked most, but after the first 2 rounds I think it's changed to the forward line that has grown to be the area most difficient of talent. I like the sound of this Hurley guy I must say tho.

hopefully we pick someone that is a footballer 1st and an athlete 2nd.

DeBoer is very athletic, a long strider who has good football speed. Forgot about him.....this years draft is going to be very strong and consistent through to about 20. We should get a couple of beauties again.
Most of the bottom five clubs will get two good kids in this draft, but we need to kick a goal with our later picks and cross our fingers that Richmond and Melbourne win more than 18 points this year. ;)

And hope we don't finish last or lose to Melbourne.

Gilly is the Oracle.

Is DeBoer gun shy about moving interstate? ;)

Isn't it 16 points?? 18 points won't get them a PP??

It is 16 points, but it's only Richmond we have to worry about. Melbourne scored 20 premiership points in 2007 and therefore are not eligible for a PP before round 1, only after round 1.

Therefore, the only way we could avoid the spoon and still get the #1 draft pick this year is if we get no more than 16 premiership points, Richmond get more than 16 premiership points and Melbourne finish below us.

Unless of course the AFL take picks from Richmond, in which case they could finish below us too and we'd still get the #1 pick...

Of course I'm not condoning this way of thinking, just clarifying the facts for others :p

And IIRC, he was one of the last cut from the VM squad last year. Could very well be one of my favourites this year. Looking forward in seeing how much improvement he has made since last year.

Certainly can't argue with his quality Carlton name.

Ryder wasn't that smart when he started playing CHB and handballed straight to Lance when red called out his name in a game last year.

Lance ran into an open goal and slammed it through. :p :D

He wasn't that hard either when he let Blake and Brown run free to take uncontested marks running back toward the goals last year.

But he learnt from his mistakes and didn't make the same mistake later in that year.

No reason why NN couldn't develop into a mobile KPP and fill out into a big boy when he's already winning the hardball according to some judges.

PS. Sick of having early picks in the draft, but it's still where we're at.

I'm not exactly because I'm not sated yet but the fact that we still don't look anything like a football side is bloody frustrating.

I like Naitanui as a potential tall forward.

I think Ryder always had innate talent but was less advanced than most of the other talls. I also notice a change in his body shape which suggests that he has grown a bit and was a little flabby as a junior.

It's not as if some of them won't be good or even great players but I'm a little sick of how many 'stock' footballers are passing through our ranks.

We need more players with a bit of an edge to them and I'm not just talking about the mongrel factor.

According to one of Ryder's coaches at junior level, he used to just cruise around the ground in games and was flamed by his coach to run harder to get to more contests. The clubs would have spoken to Ryder's coaches and learnt this because he wasn't available at seven out of chance.

Ditto for Mitch Clark at nine.

You can't question Carlton for picking Kennedy when he was providing a contest and won AA honours as a junior CHF.

You don't gamble with early picks.

Naitanui was winning contested possessions and running down older players when he was ineligible for the last draft.

A boon if we can get him.

Well summed up TG.....last weekend I went to two TAC games followed by the Essendon game. One thing that really stood out for me was the continuous intensity and pace of AFL compared to TAC.......if you don't have the adequate concentration and don't play with enough intensity for 100 minutes in junior footy, best chances are you won't be able to handle the pressure of AFL footy. Not all, but I would think most. It's amazing how many kids you see not getting the best out of themselves at U18 level.

Key position player who can play at both ends of the ground after Waite's game last night.

Calling Waite's game against the Dreamteam average would be extremely kind because he didn't look at home amongst the elite players. Waite still doesn't have the size to handle power CHFs like Brown or the nous of a Scarlett(similar size and athleticism) to handle athletic forwards like Franklin.

He looked all at sea last night.

We will have struck gold if we're lucky enough to get Hurley with our first pick, but our priority for this draft should still be a quality tall defender or tall forward if there isn't alot separating the available players. I'l be crossing my fingers that we draft a big body defender this year and fix what is still the biggest weakness on our list.

A 6'5" KPP would be a godsend. :thumbsu:

What kind of offer would be too good to refuse if a club made us an offer for Waite?

We can always trade a sillky HFF or HBB to get another second round pick to get another young forward or mid.
