Anyone think Brett Allen made the soft call? Chad Cornes seemed to kick the ball directly to the line from about 35 meters with enough power to leave me thinking he had only one intention.

The following throw in saw Port clear and kick a goal.....

Last quarter incident....

No doubt what his intent was. However, given that he was a fair way away from the boundary, there was a player in the general area and that it was a home game all contribute the benefit of the doubt in those kind of 50/50s.

For a couple of seconds though, he had the look of a kid who'd done something wrong and was trying not to show it.

I thought it was a tough one... There was a Port player near by when he kicked it but his intention was most definatly the line.

unfortunately when playing over there, travelling teams have always been a little stiff with the umpires...its a pity some bad decisions were made in the last quarter.

Yeah it was a tough call, but IMO it was a free kick to the Saints. The umprie had to have some doubt about Cornes intention not to pay a free. I think there was only one result Chad was aiming for.

Nahhhhhh. It was just a crappy kick. Chad, you should be ashamed of yourself ;)

Winners are grinners.....and all that.

Thanks for your considered input. How about you go and waste someone else's time on some other thread.

the way i remember it; his head was only looking in one direction and i doubt he even knew he had a team mate 15m+ around the boundry line, still no guarrantee the saints would have kicked a goal, although a number of players would be feeling a bit dirty on the umpires after that dicision e.g. Mitchell.

Gee you almost contributed without being a smart a***

I got cained on a different thread by saying the Saints didn't get the rub of the green on some important incidents.

This was the one I had in mind. No doubt (in my hopelessly bias mind) that Cornes deliberately kicked it out of bounds, however the umpire made a decision that gave the benefit of the doubt to Cornes.
Directly from the throw in Port took it to the other end where Brogan got the free kick ten metres out right in front.

Rub of the green? Well Port got it in this case, but considering they deserved the opportunity to play at home, these are some of the advantages you get.
If it was in Melbourne the decisions may have reversed.

No use crying over decisions it happened and Port were too good. It is not an excuse.

Port got the better of the 50/50 decisions.

Poor decision making is what cost us the game.

Poor decision making is what cost us a top 2 spot.

When our players improve in this area we'll get over the poor decisions we cop from these clowns week-in week-out. But I guess every team in the league is bemused by the umpiring these days.

What really ticks me off though, is how 46,000+ people can see the players intent. Whether it be kicking to the boundry, diving on the ball in the closing stages or staging for a free kick, it seems everyone other than the three maggots in the middle can understand the players intent.

After the performance of the umpires this year it is fitting they now wear yellow & black.

Anyone would think that was the only disposal that could've been paid deliberately out of bounds. What the? Have a look down the other end too, I think Dal Santo was the cuplrit.

The umpire will NEVER pay a free for deliberate if a player KICKS the ball even this slightest bit up ground and it bounces over. Deliberate, yes, but still the correct decision in terms of the current interpretation of the rule

Hudgton did the same thing - Got penilized......
Sounds awfully painful. Last week the elbow, this week the old night tool. Can they inject that with pain killer too? I bet he wishes he was only penalised. :D

There were deliberate kick outs and knock outs all over the ground, by both teams, all through the game. Some were dodgier than beachfront land sales in QLD but all got by.
In any game that is lost by such a slender margin you will find 50 things that could have changed the result.

mitchell, lions! enough said, oh and mitchell's went alot further forward then cornes

We had more than our fair share that the replays showed went against us. It's petty to single out a couple of events that could have contributed a goal, both Riewoldt and Gherig got soft frees inside 50 but i dont see anyone writing about them

I guess the bottomline with this particular decision is that had the umpire paid the decision and we'd scored and consequently won, Port supporters would be feeling like we are today.

I take nothing away from Port for hanging in a game they could have easily lost. Their determination to win last night was what has been lacking from previous September campaigns. It is an essential ingredient that you'll need to beat the Lions at their best.

Twice this year we have played games like last night. The first being the game against the Lions at the dome. We got lucky in that game, although we controlled most of the game, last night we didn't. We need to learn what Port have learnt the hard way and the Lions have mastered for a few years now. Once we can do this, look out!

Two years ago v the Pies, Robert Murphy kicked the ball about 50 metres up the boundary and dribbled over the line. A free kick was paid.
Depends on the umpire and who the home team is.

thats an easy one, you could see the ball went backwards and therefore was no advantage to PA. that should of been a free kick to saints, take a look he gained no ground
