Since i can remember every single year whenever anyone says that year they just say the last two numbers, Eg: 76, 89, 98, 06 Etc..., so in 2010 just saying 10 will just sound plain weird and us being Australians their is no way anyone would consider not using an abbreviation so whats everyone going to say?

Twenty-ten.

I was reading some article a few years back by a linguist about this subject and he reckons it wont be until 2013 people revert to the last two digits.

I really can't see myself referring to years with only two digits until the 2020's now.

Like, I won't say "Oh, I remember back in THIRTEEN when so-and-so won the Brownlow".

I'll say twenty-thirteen.

However, 2023, i'd simply refer to as "Back in twenty-three..."

Yeah Twenty Tens what i was thinking but for sporting events "(event name) twenty ten" sounds weird

ha, yes how cool will it be to say... I'm going to live through the 20s.

Will just call it two thousand and ten I think. We have already had a movie called 2010 and said as two thousand and ten so it sounds familiar.

Will probably say it all the way up to good ol' twenty.

That got me thinking a little...

If we start calling the 2020's "20's" and 2030's "30's" ect;

Won't anyone stop and assume you're talking about the 1920's instead or whatever?... sure, we might get used to it, and we may start calling the 20th century with a 19... but it really makes you think. Whenever someone says "30's" I always think of the 1930's.

Another thing that got me thinking is, living through the "Naughties" or "000's" is cool & all, but the "10's" & "20's" not so much...

Everyone remembers the 1900's, start of a new century, ect; ect; - But no one cares, or even bothers to aknowledge the "1910's", and people usually ignore what happened in the "1920's"...

So who's to say it won't happen again?... I'd assume people who get to see the "2080's" will hardly bother to aknowledge us, the same thing we do to the "10's" and "20's" now.

Wow imagine that. 2060, 2070, 2080, 2090, 3000. Imagine living in the 80's again!... heck, I'm still certain civilizations in those times will still remember the 60's, 70's & 80's of our time considering the rich history & technological advancements still sure to be referred to in the future.

Guy #1 - "Oh, back in 87..."

Guy #2 - "1987, or 2087?"

Imagine the year 5000. - really makes you think (based on the evolution of our society) how different things might be. And super, super highly advanced at that. You'd think children born during this time will grow up & barely lift a finger. Meh, I'm glad I get to enjoy life in the 2000's, neighbours to the good ol' generations X & Y, and I wouldn't trade the life in the 90's I had as a kid for the world. ;)

Good thread. Always enjoy talking about this sort of thing.

Think you're getting a little ahead of yourself there. What happened to the 2100's, 2200's, etc ;)

I see what you mean, but I didn't forget 'em haha. I put 3000 in there as a "jump"... like, 3000... damn. :p

2980's... wouldn't be the same. You see a 9, but where's the 1?? Trippy.

These timelines are giving me a headache. lol. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up going "Geeez, lets just start over yeah?... year 1, here we go!"

Makes me wonder in 2060 after the tigers sack another failed coach, will people say...

"well we had to get rid of Richardson as, despite his noble ancestry and the fact that in 2053 he finally got us to the Tigers' first finals since the early noughties, the 7 consecutive 9th finishes since no longer cuts the mustard."

I wonder what they'll do with games like FIFA

FIFA 08, FIFA, 09 FIFA 10?

FIFA 010

It'll be FIFA 2010, like how it was FIFA 2000.

You realise this would be a conversation between two people at least 105 years old in order for them to both lived through 1987 and 2987 and actually remember it. The memory of the 20's being 1920 will die out as the people who were bought up referring to it as that do, it will happen. Nobody hears the 70's and instantly thinks "He must be talking about Australia's discovery" or "The American Civil War".

That is true. I was exaggerating a little.

But if you think about it, the 60's, 70's & 80's of our time is so rich in history & technological advances that it would be almost impossible to forget, no matter how far you are in the future. Honestly... the world population in the 1880's must have been significantly lower back then, and the amount of media coverage & cultural knowledge must have been quite isolated back then as well.

Whereas now, TV, music, radio, not to mention the internet will most likely cement this knowledge into our society for a long time to come. And I wasn't just talking about someone referring back to their "memories" per-say, but more-so a well known event.

Pretty soon we'll be surpassing the 2030's/2040's - who's to say Hitler or WWI/WII will be forgotten/ignored decades after this?

It just seems as if the 20th century (1900's) has been, and probably will be the most memorable & eventful century ever. Mainly thanks to the population, broad range of knowledge & boost in never-before-seen technology.

Well they could be saying in the 22nd century how underpriviledged we are right now

I'll say twenty-ten

and will hope that 'ten' catches on such that it doesn't sound abnormal like it would at this moment, purely for the sake of my laziness.
