Based on the performance and not taking injuries into consideration, after the season we have had this year, what would all the Tiger potsers out there consider a successful year in 2008?

Personally I would think with a bit of luck and a few wins in the close ones and we could hit double figures next year 10-11 wins

The 8 would be great but realistically I think our list is still very young and we still have a lack of senior leaders. It will take time for guys like Lids, Foley, Tambo and co to develop into genuine leaders.:confused:

Tough question ... and a good question .

Ploughs problem is this .... if we only win in the vicinity of say ... 5-7 games which is all i reckon we will be good for , then the blow torch will be well and truly on him .

Will he be able to stare down the vulchers as he has done this year ? IMHO he deserves the whole 5 years , but i hope he dosn`t succumb to the temptation of going for a short term fix or two in this years draft as a subtle way to jag that extra win or two to shore up his position .

Success for me will be seeing genuine improvement and development of our existing youth . Jack Riewoldt , Daniel Conners , Shane Edwards taking genuine forward steps . Hopefully seeing JON and Casserly finally take some steps forward and earning some regular senior games . If those 5 in particular plus a few others become regular senior players , and not just "making up the numbers" type players ... players with some legitimate excitement around them then i will say we have had a good year ...

i know we need to start winning games but if these types of kids can all show that they can go on and become 150 - 200 gamers then i will say we have had a good year ... regardless of how many wins we get .

I just hope TW continues to get 100% support and does not stray from the game plan due to the pressure that will no doubt be put on him

Could not agree more.
Your name always gets me IDGAF because it is obvious that you really do GAF with the majority of your posts.:thumbsu:

the kids, JON, Casserly, Collins, Connors, Petersen, Riewoldt etc etc etc.

I really hope Meyer starts to fire up too, IF he ends up finding alot more pill then it'll work out.

I hope Browny returns to his prime too.

we'll only be able to tell this time next season...there aren't any hard and fast rules as to whether a season is a success, all a matter of personal judgement imo

as stupid as it sounds I have been more pleased with this season than last simply because we've turfed a couple of players that were causing us to stall (we aren't done yet), our young players have really shown us that they have the ability and we have played much better footy than last season, especially towards the end of the season.

Most of all we seem to have a core of young players who can take us to the next step, (with some augmentation from the next two or three drafts of course;))....we haven't had that for a fair while. Compares such illuminaries as Fleming, Morrisson, Roach, Gilmore, Zantuck, C King etc to Polak, Foley, Deledio, Edwards, Connors, Tambling, King and you'll get my drift

A success would be if Edwards, Lids, Tambling, Connors, Riewoldt, Thursfield, Hughes, McGuane, Patto, Casserley etc continue to improve. Hopefully Meyer, Schulz, JON show a lot of improvement and the majority of picks from 07 look good. Also Foley maintains his form from this season and Raines returns to 06 form :thumbsu:

Obviously the form of senior players will play a huge part in determining where we finish, but its the form of the kids that will decide if the season has been a success or not in my view.

What he said.
Plus I want to see four or five gamebreaking games by Deledio.
Rapid improvement in Tambling.
I want to see Polo become the player I know he can be.
I desperately want to see Hughes take the next step.
I want to see Richo be phased out of the equation in a dignified way.

Firstly, they need to improve their disposal skills as they are abhorrent at the moment. These deficiencies are playing a massive part in the situation we are currently in. We should have won at least two or three more games but turnovers have killed us.

I think that a few wins would be achievable, and although there is a school of thought that we need to play the kids like Petersen, JON, Casserly etc. I would be cautious about throwing more younger players into the team as I think we've been exposed as being too inexperienced this season. Putting all those players into the current line-up would only keep us in the same situation as we are now. If the season is over for us by round 11, go for it. Play as many as you like.

Having said that, I believe we do have some good kids on the list and there is definitely positive signs for the future. Continued improvement and a few wins would be a successful year, in my opinion.

Considering we are coming off a 2.5 win season, I think that for next year we should be aiming at 6-8 legitimate wins, not wins achieved by a tricky gameplan or getting lucky, but wins where we have won because we were genuinely better than the opposition. In doing this the ladder position will take care of itself but I would expect it would see us finish somewhere in the 11th-14th bracket.

From a playing list point of view, seeing continual improvement in players like Thursfield, McGuane, Riewoldt, Connors, Schulz, Meyer, JON, King, Hughes. The debuts of Casserly, Peterson, Collins and the majority of the 07 draftees will also be something to look forward to. I would also like to see Raines, Tambling, Deledio & Polo firmly establish themselves as stars of the game. At present they are still looked upon as players with potential and I think if they can truly establish themselves then we are well on the way to turning the corner.

Finally I want to see a gradual phasing out of the reliance on players like Brown, Richo, JB & Johnson having good games for us to be competitive. This would mean that we are starting to rely on those younger players I mentioned above to win us games and that would to me indicate we have finally turned the corner and are on the way back to being a feared side again.

All of the above plus Axel to consolidate himself as one of the league's top extractors.
I'd like him to take the next step and not suffer the post breakout season blues when he gets a bit more attention next year.

All of the above as well as a belief in the group and the start of a winning culture in the club. Assuming Richmond only win 5-8 games hopefully 4-5 of these come in the last 6-7 rounds especially winning the last two games to give the club some impetus for 2009.

Success is a tough one...No truly be a success, I'd expect more than the normal/basic development I'd expect from a young list such as ours.

For our kids ( and remember, most of the team are still 'growing' ), I would expect the following.

Physically:
Bigger
Stronger
More Stamina

Mentally:
Knowing how to use their the above...(tackling, riding bumps, etc )
Knowing where to go, both to get the ball, and to make it easier for teammates to dispose of it, be it for you, or making space for a teammate.
Knowing how hard you can push yourself...gut running.
Spotting a teammate in position to receive, and picking the good options.

Skills:
Not saying these don't need work in themselves, but having the above will make the skills better, by giving the players that extra moment to sum up the situation, steady and dispose.

Also,
An across the board improvement like that will take pressure OFF everyone, by making the opposition accountable for all players, at all times, rather than being able to zone off or close down as required.

ALL of this is basic to young players learning their way, and all kids in every team go through it. It's just more obvious and looks worse for us because they don't have the numbers of older players to cover for them.

As such, I EXPECT our team to improve in all these areas, and I wont think the season a success if we get them, merely a 'par' performance, and a failure if we don't.

Success is, to me, doing better than that and considering the number of close games we've had, especially early in the season, I think we can play finals next year, or at least challenge for them if we get a few early wins and confidence is up.

I think you guys have been, like st.kilda, crippled by injuries. Dont get me wrong im not blamming your 16th posistion finninsh on injuries. But as a fan that has felt the pain of missing multiple players in your top 10 eg, Coughlan and Simmonds i know when they get back form does seem to improve. I think richmond may need another year or two in the bottom 8 to really stock up, similar to st.kilda in the 2000-2003 period where we were the laughing stock of the AFL. But with the development of Reiwoldt, Raines, McGuane, Edwards and Thursfeild. Plus your all-australian contender Foley, i think you can have extended sucsess at the top.

best of luck with the last two games.

1. It all depends who those wins come against.
2. It also depends on when we get them, i.e. imagine if we came home this year with a 5 wins in the last 7 rounds.
3. If and when the genuine improvement in the players you talk of happens, taking away the players that will not be there, who are masters of defeat, we will automatcally become competitive in most of our games. Which to me equates to making the 8. I am not kidding, dont forget we are punching for a big name players as well as big name draft pick. You can also factor in an out of left field, rookie pick up who comes out of nowhere and makes a mark and you have quality all over the ground at ****ing last.

That adds more quality to the quality that will remain. Stay tuned, if we dont get another blow out with "long term" injuries, we make the 8.
Just clean out the rubbish TW. ;)
