Was watching the 89 Granny for the umpteenth time, and Wittman caught my eye. Can remember back then he was one of my favourites - was hard at it despite his lack of build. Then when watching the 91 Granny he wasn't there. Looked up his stats and saw he retired/was delisted at the age of 27 after 9 games at St Kilda. I guess my questions are: Did he have a serious injury at some point after 89? Did he just lose form and never get it back? Or did Gowers take his spot in the team?

Was a handy player at South Adelaide. Won the B&F in 1994 under Ken Sheldon and made the initial list of 70 in their "Greatest South Adelaide team".

Not sure what he's doing now but I heard he's still good mates with Brereton.

  • Pretty sure he was mates with Stewie Lowe. Had a kick to kick with him & Stewie when I was a little kid growing up in Mt Eliza (circa 1985)

if i remember correctly, he actually walked out of Hawthorn midway through season 1992 after he could not get a game, which could help explain why we traded him to St kilda in 93. I remember when he debuted in 1986 wearing the number 31 jumper, looked a likely prospect, and was glad we had him around in 88-89

Yeah, he lives down Torquay way. Have spoken to him recently. Business-orientated, family man.
Still mates with Brereton, they were on business together sometime. Tony Hall lives down that way also. That's enough.....

Heard he had a Noodle Box shop in the Main Street down here in sunny Geelong.
That was a few years ago. I did go and buy some one day just to see if it was true and did see him in there.
Great player but was competing against some pretty special players at the time.

Thought Tony lives in Malvern - maybe he has a holiday home Torquay??????

Yeah, I think it might be a holiday house, my apologies.

Yes, Chris had Noodle Box with Dermie in Geelong.

I see or speak to him occasionally, so I'm not like his good mate or anything, but I can consider him a friend of some sort.

Your a lucky man to be mates with a Hawk premiership player. Was a player who gave his all in an incredible Hawks eraand one of my favs in the 80s :thumbsu:

Based on the old games I've watched recently he was a much better player than I remember - probably flew under the radar a bit with all the other stars in those teams.

We had a few players leave and end up at St Kilda at around the same time and never really kick on - Wittman, Dean Anderson, Lawrence Bingham and Sean Ralphsmith come to mind. Russell Morris as well, although I think he was pretty serviceable for them for a 30+ y.o.

Chopper Handley, Josh Kitchen and Glen Nugent too IIRC.
