Breaking news that you heard here first. I know some people who know some people. He will announce his retirement tomorrow.

Take this information as gospel people.

All the best to him if true. Sounds like he got the tap on the shoulder.

1 retirement down, possibly 3 to go.

I think it is probably the right time for him to do so. He has been a loyal servant of the club for a number of years, so we must thank him for his efforts and wish him luck for the future.

Sorry, just clarifying please: Is it retirement for the club or AFL completely?

Dang. I like Wheatley. i don't know why, exactly. Probably because he plays for Melbourne. Good luck to him.

I found this out last wednesday!! He told the boys on thursday i think and is trying his hardest to get close to fit to hopefully play one last game against the saints!!
He is retiring from AFL all together!!
i really liked wheats!!
first ever SUPER GOAL!!!

Great glue guy with an long boot. In the Daniher years, was an integral cog in the backline, with Yze and Wheats delivering from half back to Neita - it was a great mix.

I've never been so happy, I think I could cry with joy if this is true.

Although credit to Wheatley for doing the right thing for the club.

Crying for joy because one of our players is retiring? Really? That's poor...

I agree that Wheatley had to go at the end of this season, but it will be sad to see him go... He showed us glimpses of his full potential, unfortunately his body never really allowed him to realise how good he could've been...

At 28, it's time to go, but I'd imagine every AFL footballer would aim to play until they're 30, so in that sense I'd imagine he'd be a little disappointed...

I wonder if he'll head to the states and take the punting on? Definitely has the tools to do so...

Congrats Wheats on a great career...

Will never forget when Nathan Brown said on the gospel that Paul Wheatley was sledging him. He said "You really know you are struggling when Wheatley sledges you."

According to Hutchy, Whelan also to retire, and Robertson to leave Melbourne as well, but apparently he is looking to play on with the Dogs as a possible option.

Underrated footballer, best wishes to him, deserves to be remembered as a very handy player.

Would only be 27-28, surely (same draft as Fraser, in 99)? Surely Melb could do with him for another year.

If the Hutchy news is true, I think it's the right move.

That said, I'll miss them all, not many players play 150+ games, we're lucky to have three here. Whelan one of my favourites, Wheatley vastly underrated and Robbo is Robbo, the last decade wouldn't have been half as interesting without him. A real character.

Pity injury has affected him so much.

Wheels & Robbo have made the righ choice.

Will miss all 3 of them... only a couple left from the "old crew"
