Review When does the Penny drop for Sando

Anyone hear Doc Clarke on the radio this morning? Big fella actually fired up after some probing from Rucci, especially about the Crows reserves team. Was good to listen too.

Anyway, he got asked specifically about Deledio. Clarke said that Deledio, Cotchin and Martin had all been rotating through the midfield and half forward recently. So their planning was towards that, and the forwards' pre-game instructions was about making Newman and Houli accountable and preventing them from mopping up at the back.

Then Richmond changed it up by having Deledio across half back.

Rooch queried why did it take a quarter and a half to do something about it and Clarke said that the very first message of the game that went out was to the forwards, telling them that Deledio was now their No 1 defensive target and that they needed to round him up.

He said the responsibility wasn't directed to a single player, but to the forward line as a group. Eg whoever Deledio lined up on was responsible for making him accountable. Obviously didn't happen.

Points to a lack of onfield leadership in the forward line. Also perhaps too many non-forwards rotating through there without the smarts. Perhaps also too many players playing as individuals and worrying about their spots rather than filling the team-first, sacrificial roles. Too much faith from the coaches' box in the players to sort it out on the ground as well. Also Bickley in a role he isn't suited to. And Sando not being decisive enough to make a call early.

This is where our on field leadership breaks down IMO.
If it was Thommo's man, surely as VC he either looks after him or he tells someone else too.
Or the captain goes over to him or tells someone else too. I couldn't imagine Hodge letting Deledio run around all day by himself.

I just wonder if there are people around Sando left over from the Craig era giving him Craig like advice. And without Bailey this background noise is disruptive. ?
Good point I reckon. It's only natural that Craig would have had a significant impact on Bickley, Clarke, Campo. Clarke churned out a few Neil Craig specials on the radio this morning (fierce determination was in there). When under pressure, you go back to what you know.

Wood Duck is spot on. Need more fresh blood in the coaching box.

I was worried when I heard Sando saying stuff like "the effort is there, but not the intensity" - which is Craig-speak nothingness.

Yes the assistant coaches need to take responsibility for the failings of their particulsr zones however Cmon let's not blame the assistant coaches for the Sando Spin

I was hoping one of the Journo's would pull him up on that and ask him to explain the difference, but it just went through to the keeper.

Hodge would try and flatten him the first chance he got...

This is 100% on the coaches box. What a balls-up. You don't send a generic message to a "group" of players, unless it's something like, there's two minutes to go, or, change the tempo of the game.

In this instance there needed to be a clear instruction to an INDIVIDUAL to man up on Deledio. There should have been no doubt in the individual's mind that this was his job, and there should have been no doubt in the minds of the coaches that this instruction had been issued to an individual and it was to be acted on. What a schoolboy error in communication from the coaches box - and the result was there for all to see.

It points to all those things but most of all it points to an inexperienced coaches box over-estimating the intelligence and awareness of its playing group, and that is a HUGE concern. You want a man on Deledio, you tell a man to get on Deledio. You don't tell six forwards who will all assume it's someone else's problem.

Wake the **** up, Doc.

It's the kind of thing that would have worked fine at Geelong I'm sure, with smart quality footballers bursting with leadership.

With an out of form, young team lacking in leaders though... dicing with trouble.

I liked Doc's interview. He was a feisty little minx. But he also completely failed to take responsibility (on behalf of the coaches) for the errors on Saturday and the direction of the season as a whole. The Deledio excuse was laughable: 'We weren't expecting him back there and, besides, we told the players, so what can you do?' Also pulled out the 'we're only one game out of the eight' line and reckons the team is only a 'little bit out of form'.

Basically, what would give me some hope as a supporter, is a statement along the lines of...'We've made some errors this year, but we've got two weeks and we're going to change what we need to and get it right.' Instead it's all, 'Nothing to see here. Steady as she goes. It'll come good.'

Just having a look over previous games, and it has occured to me that our coaches (starting from the head coach) just seem to stagnate and have no real emotion in the coaches box on game day. Is this as troubling as it seems?

The only time i remember some emotion in the box, cast your mind back to when we defeated the Swans in Sydney last year, plenty of emotion and smiles in that box = win.... cast your mind back a few weeks ago at Etihad, the box when bonkers in the one point win against the Kangaroos = win.

Now obviously we don't see what happens during the week at training, and what happens between the breaks at the game, but through matches and press conferences, Sanderson just seems to have the one emotion. He sometimes even laughs and smiles after a loss through his press conferences.

Is this troubling? We've seen Brad Scott use to great dummie spits in previous years, Mark Neeld (all bit it, his team is shithouse so he is excused) We've even seen the great Mick Malthouse throughout his whole coaching career get emotional, frustrated and we've all seen it.
Sanderson just seems content and happy with the way things are going. He reall needs to find a hard edge about himself and not be afraid to make the tough calls.

It seems to be rubbing off on the players. Maybe they are just too relaxed during the week at training, maybe they bring a relaxed attitude on game day and hence the reason we are seeing poor performances along with other factors.

Just wanna get the thoughts of other Crows supporters, as i don't know about you, but i find this troubling that our Senior coach doesn't get high on emotion during matches.

Yep. It's fairly simple to send a runner out to Matty Wright with the message: "Get on Deledio, shut him down and kick a couple yourself." They could have even thrown Patty onto him to make Deledio crap himself at suddenly having responsibility for our gun player.

But no. Instead we got "how about you guys sort it out amongst yourselves and let us know in the Monday morning review meeting how you get on."

This really is key to me. From the start of the NAB cup our game plan & form has been shyte and it has continued to be shyte.
This is the great Neil Craig "We need to get better at that" attitude thinking the stars will somehow mysteriously align, meanwhile we sit back and watch the season go down the sewer without doing anything about it........and these blokes get paid big bucks for this.

When things aren't working continue to do the same.........dead set laughable!!!!!
