It is a stupid rule.

Because when there is a close game a goal will be kicked by the team chasing with say 37 seconds left on the clock.

Your at home going ok they have 37 seconds to get the winner now. But then by the time the ball is back in the centre and the game restarts the clock will be at 32 seconds.

If the ball has crossed the line, the clock should STOP. The same as it does if it goes out of bounds.

And the clock is stopped from the umpire casing time off until the ball is bounced.

So the goal doesn't technically count until the ball gets bounced and the clock restarts the actual time is the same
Again not true. If you're talking about when it "technically count" then it's when it is literally counted by being added to the umpiring scoresheet and scoreboard. It can then be officially uncounted by being over turned at any point in time the AFL ruling bodies deem fit. For practicality sake and everyone's enjoyment and sanity this tends to be restricted to the time it takes to bounce the ball in the centre again. But of course there is precedents for scores being over turned well after the game is over. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_siren_controversy

The goal has been scored the second the ball crosses the line. The signal is an acknowledgement that the goal has been scored.

Sportsbet need to have some fine print somewhere, because if you can produce video of the ball crossing the line at 2.57, they should pay out that bet IMO.

They do. It's right below the market selections.

"Pay on the time of First goal. As per official Champion Data Statistics. Time of goal is resulted on the running clock, time on is included."

How does the timekeeper know exactly what time the ball crosses the line? The person best to judge that is the goal umpire. The signal of the boundary umpire would stop the clock just the same.

If you can't win the game in the 80 minutes allotted then a few seconds at the end won't make much difference.

That is a stupid argument.

Like Carlton last week when they marked the ball half a second after the siren?

Explain to me how the timekeeper, sitting somewhere in the stand, would know when or if the ball has crossed a line?

Well when you see a ball land in the stands its pretty ******* obvious that the ball has crossed the line, do they need to wait 5 seconds for an umpire to wave their fingers?

Or hey since we have technology in the 21st century and there is about 45 seconds between a goal being kicked and a ball bouncing it wouldn't be hard to have someone keep watch on that and tell the time keepers to add back on 3-5 seconds after a goal.
