Using we again in the 2nd last sentence ... Apologist.
Anyway lets not digress from the issue that ape has not been used as a racist term in this country and so we should keep that in mind. If it is from now on then so be it. I guess we can thank the yanks for this new taboo word ... Hang on is "yanks" racist or is that ok because we assume that refers only to "white" Americans and we can racially denigrate white folks, pasties etc freely ? And is calling a white person a dove now racist too? It offends me and my opinion counts as much as Adam Goodes doesn't it?
This might help enlighten you. Somehow doubt it though.

My view on these matters has always been this.
Isn't the whole aim/view of removing racism to see everyone as equal regardless of race/ethnicity/ancestory?
By creating an indegenous round to "honour" them, aren't we in effect creating a point of difference and highlighting those differences?
Do we have a "non-indigenous round" to celebrate the contribution non indegenous players have made to the game? Do we have an Italian round? A non-Christian round? So why then do we create a point of difference for the Indegenous players.

I can't help but feel that all this effort to promote equality and recognition and what not may actually contribute to this idea of difference, where as the whole idea is to view people as equal.

I think the meaning of indigenous round is more of a celebration of the contribution made by a previously oppressed minority rather than promoting equality....

Thanks for your thoughtful response ... It was an enlightening article and since me initial postings I have done a lot of reading on the subject as well as talking to a number of my mates (of varied backgrounds) on the topic .... I understand now that "ape" is perceived by SOME of them as a racist term ... Interestingly, my original point was that ape was not a racist term in this country (prior to last week) and all of my mates who are 2nd generation onwards Australians (even those with Indian/SriLankan background who are "black") did not consider the term ape as racist

Two of my best friends are black (indian), and I'm one of the most racist people I know. Nothing to do with the colour of their skin, just the overwhelming majority of Aboriginal people where I live are pretty useless.

They're just people. Just like the white people that live in your area that would be equally as useless.

It offends you on the basis that you and your fellow 'white doves' were discriminated against for centuries? I've never heard a more ridiculous bunch of crap in my life. You don't understand it, that's clear but that in itself should be enough for you. If something clearly makes someone upset (and an entire race of people) then it shouldn't be said.... end of story. You are making a goose of yourself and it's pretty embarrassing for you (well it would be if you had a clue)

Sorry to the Carlton supporter who has wasted all his time educating you. Just need to accept that some people will just never understand....

Yep, some people simply don't get it, it astounds me, I had no idea it was this bad until the events over the past few weeks. Just a reflection on society at the moment. The postings on here, talkback radio and people on Facebook/Twitter have shocked me.

Isn't there a school of thought that footy was based on an aboriginal game. ?

Apparently racism is a one way street and only happens against aboriginals. Surely there aren't aboriginals that are racist against whites...Nahhh never.....

Not too many of them have stolen a generation of white people....no. Nor tried to force them to live the way that they think is right.... you clearly lack information about what white people actually did to Aboriginals over the last couple of hundred years.... Maybe you should try and do some research.

That excuse is absolutely disgusting. Who the fuq cares what anyone else does, you don't compromise morals because others do something wrong. Besides, being racist only reflects badly on the individual being racist. Nobody here is saying only one group is racist to the other. This is a discussion on how to stop racism, period.

Ps chunkylover is right, you need to read over the thread before making completely ignorant comments. The only good thing you said was "scallywag". Lol

mmmm should i comment probally not ,but to pick out a 14 year old girl out to make a big song and dance about racism is just not on, fair dinkum shes just a kid and goodes should b ashamed of himself.

Interestingly, my original point was that ape was not a racist term in this country (prior to last week)

http://www.rsdb.org/slur/rock_ape

From the racial slur data base.

I remember this term being used against Aboriginal people in my youth
Which is about the time Richmond last won a premiership.
It was doubtlessly around long before then.

really just shaking my head at some of the attitudes and lack of understanding in this thread. A white person complaining about black people being racist to them? oh my heart bleeds! Seriously I am just lost for words. You can call me what you want (being white) and I will just laugh it off from my position of racial power. Indigenous Australians have copped it in slurs and attitude (among other things) for generations. No white person can possibly understand what it is like to be black in our society. And those saying 'Ape' is not racist, get a clue.

Ape is not a racist term in this country or any other country as far as I know...never has been...its just a word...
Ape is not defined in any reputable dictionary that I know of as a racist word...its just a word...
Calling a white person an Ape is ill mannered/offensive and objectionable...and you wouldn't keep saying it to a white Hell's Angel motorcyclist if he asked you to stop...but it wouldn't be considered a racial slur/term in that context...
Calling "SOME" Aboriginal player like Adam Goodes...an Ape...is a racial slur/term...even last year and not because of last week...
Adam Goodes doesn't check a dictionary every time he gets called names to confirm if they are racist terms/slurs/vilifications...
Adam Goodes knows a racist slur when it is directed at him intentionally or not...
Don't argue semantics with BF posters here or with me about racist terms...take it up with Adam Goodes...
And just for good measure while your at it... call him an Ape...Monkey...Gorilla...King Kong...

Nobody should be abused because of their race. Even black on white which does happen , doesn't make it right. It is about how the person feels being abused...right?
