Thommo and Goody should definatley be in for next week.

RE: VB - Yeah he did some nice things but was'nt all that damaging. Playing on Stevens didnt make sense to me, especially after hearing Pyman's 1/4 time address. Pyman pointed out that the Panthers had not been crumbing the ball well.

If that's the case, why leave VB on a tall defender? Why not throw VB up forward to help out Davey at winning the pill at ground level? It looked Davey was doing it all on his own.

I think the answer to that was simple though Jerome.

The kid was playing his first SANFL game and had the better of a player who's played a fair bit of AFL and was many centimetres taller than him.

Scott Stevens got an early goal and barely touched leather after that. i'm sure Pyman would have been very pleased with VB.

Some observations from South Vs Port -

Stevens - Useless hack, beaten by a bloke in his first game 10 cms shorter than him.

Thompson - Will be gun, notice the diffrence between a player like Thompson dominating a SANFL match and a player like Shirley or Skipworth dominating a SANFL game, is a class above and i agree with you blokes add Goodwin and Thompson to the Crows midfield and it starts looking quite strong but is in desparate need of a tagger which brings me to

Van Berlo - Outstanding, playing on Scott Stevens neutralised him beautifly which made me think, if he can play on a bigger, stronger opponent such as Stevens why not let him learn the game as a tagger at AFL level a la Kane Cornes. After watching the game i think this may be our answer. Looks to be a good player.

P.S.

The Magpies forward line looked very threatning with Evans, Waterhouse, Stevens and Ah Chee. Also watch out for Aaron Davey's younger brother Alqan, looks to be quite a player for South.

Anyone know how Kruger/Andrews/Hinge/Jericho/Schuback went in the other game?

Found Scorecard for Glenelg Vs. Westies

Glenelg 15.12 102
Westies 14.7 91 Wiggins 6 Goals!

Jericho kicked a goal for West but no best players mentioned.

I notice that Schuback is listed with a back injury from the match. Anyone know the severity of it?

In the paper today, it just said that Schuey was on the receiving end of a high hip and shoulder. There's nothing about how serious it is, so hopefully it's not too bad.

I don't know how updated this paper is though, it was bought at 1am this morning and doesn't even have anything about the Port loss in it!

Freddy Kreuger pulled out of the game because of his back.....

Chewey injured his back during the game......I'm not sure how bad yet...

I notice the Sunday mail barred up this morning over Rhett kicking 4 goals for the Westies reserves... !!.....

Westies seniors - Jericho - 12 possies, 3 marks, Kicked 0.0

South - The Count - 13 possies, 3 marks - 0.0

Maggies - Thommo - 28 possies, 7 marks - 2 Goals........ ;)

Maggies - S Stevens - 14......5.....played in defence

Thommo needs to come straight in for Skippy next week.

I know this is slightly off topic but should we take a punt or Alwyn Davey at the end of the year. Both Alwyn and Aaron played for Magpies 2-3 years ago and were pretty dynamic crumbing duo and then they disappeared. Aaron ended up at Port Melbourne but I am not sure where Alwyn has been before this year.

Alwyn is a fait bit on the short side but he has sheer pace, crumbing ability and some silky skills. From what I remember of him in Port days, he was a bit soft but he has improved that side of his games considerably. He was tackling and putting his body on line on a number of occasions yesterday. Ended up with 18 possesions, 9 tackles and a couple of goals. I am not sure how old he is but surely he could be worth a punt late in the draft. He couldn't be any worse than other crumbers we have on our list.

I think Macca19 could probably fill us in on Alwyn's age and possibly his height. Drafting him this year might give us a chance of recruiting Aaron over from the demons in the next couple of years :D

Thoughts??????

Yeah Davey is worth a punt I think, that punt has paid dividends for Melbourne with Aaron.

After the game yesterday Thompson will be straight into the Crows side, the bloke is just quality and he will be a topline player for you. Looked a class above yesterday as you would expect.

Hard night on the turps Stiffy :p

Iam starting to get annoyed at our pre-occuoance of recruiting back players from other clubs that we originally ovelooked.

IMHO we should be concentrating on not letting through our net when we have the opportunity.

Moreover sometimes we do overlook in favour of the greater need.

Fact is these guys with other clubs will in all probability stay with their clubs so why get worked up over nothing.

In regard to this particular davey I would say there is no shortage of those guys avaialble to us - the fact most clubs overlook them (Betts, Davey, Rodan, Milne, Miller) due to their inflexibility means in any one year if you really choose to get one of those types they're always available.

Which also says if the pre-requisite of these guys is crumbing ability and pace to break clear of packs, why the hell did we ever choose Skippy

Why not ? As you say a late draft pick is just as good as any. Dont mind his height..the question is can he get the ball and once he does what does he do with it? I am concerned at this raising of the height bar. Brad Gotch 5'5'' and a good little player. He wouldnt even make most SANFL sides because of his height???

First criteria as I said is can the player get the ball and use it..if Alwyn Davies fits that criteria then why not.

Actually it was pretty big night on the turps. Wen out at 10:30ish last night and came home at 4 this morning

I can see your points especially regarding the inflexibility of those players but one of the reasons I mentioned Alwyn Davey was because he played both as a forward, defender and a wingman yesterday. So in that sense he showed some flexibility and ability to play multiple positions.

I also say of interstate based SA lads express interest in coming home then lets get them ;) A lot of premirership sides have been built around astute drafting and some bloody good trading. Port's premiership side had as many as 9 (????) players that were recruited to the club via trades. Trading is equally important as drafting if yuo want to be a successful side.

Alwyn Davey.

First thing ill say is picking the brother of someone that has turned into a gun isnt always the best thing to do. Marcus Pickett and Jeremy Johncock are two examples.

Hes not bad tho Alwyn. Tragically when i moved house 8 months or so ago all my old records and Port annual reports were thrown out by accident which left me very distraught, so I cant come up with a set age or height for you Stiffy.

He is the older brother tho. They both played in the reserves in 2001 and kicked about 90 goals between them from memory.

Aaron burst onto the scene mid 02 in the middle of the biggest dry patch of wins for the Pies for half a century or so and kicked 4 goals on debut against West at Richmond. Was a bit inconsistent but showed extraordinary pace and goal sense.

Alwyn debuted later on in the year and played on a wing compared to Aaron on a flank. Quite pacey but was very pudgy - almost overweight back then. Did show a fair bit but then both decided to leave the Magpies at the end of 02 (much to my dismay).

Aaron bobbed up at Port Melbourne and Alwyn decided to go to the Panthers last year and played a few senior games last year.

I would say hes about 22-23. Personally I dont think he would make it at AFL level.

I totally agree on this.

The AFC have done very well with trades in the past although it's much harder to come out in front on trades these days (except where Thompson and Stenglein were concerned as we definately have gained there ;) ).

If guys expressly want to come home - fine, otherwise us expressing an interest only serves to increase their contract negotiations IMO.

We have let some good ones go in the past, hopefuuly in future we won't let really talented players slip past us.
