Back by popular demand (well, one Hawthorn supporter Strapping Young Lad ) is my annual "Which list is in the most trouble age profile wise, 2023 edition"

This thread is about the older players of each club and how ready the players underneath them are ready to take over, and also importantly how many younger talented players are coming through their system as well.

So some ground rules here. I have ranked the teams based on how many players they have over the age of 29, as 29 is about the time that some players begin slowing down. I have also only picked players that have played a minimum of 5 games as at least there is enough body of work there to begin to discuss what those players could become.

Each person will have 3 selections for the 3 clubs that they think are about to enter a world of hurt.

Also for fun which clubs do you think are doing really well with their age profile (though obviously not in the poll)

For me just looking at this list I am actually surprised at how healthy Port Adelaide's list looks going forward, and just how young Hawthorn's list is, really lacking in anyone over the age of 25.

I ended up voting for Geelong (yes I know they thumped us in the Grand Final), GWS, them having a lot of important players nearing retirement and West Coast who are not in a good position on the ladder to begin with and they are also a surprisingly old list with some very important players on the wrong side of 30. I almost voted for Hawthorn too as that is a really bad list profile but they didn't quite get my vote as I do like some of their younger players.

Also if I made any mistakes feel free to tell me as I will be happy to fix them.

What is interesting is age-wise both Geelong and WCE are in a bad spot but they are at opposite ends of the ladder.

As usual we should win this poll.

Geelong's team bus will be be picking up players, for the game, in retirement villages in the coming years

and they'll still be winning premierships

I would look at both the age profile AND the expected positions going into 2023.

e.g. I wouldn't regard Hawthorn as "being in trouble list wise"....they're consciously rebuilding and know exactly where they are. Finishing low on the ladder is not so bad because they're aiming to pump games into youth.

I'd say GWS and West Coast are the most "in trouble" in that they're ageing lists but not predicted to be contenders in 2023. Gold Coast less so because they seem to have more obvious young talent coming through at the moment and would be regarded as more likely finalists this season than either the Giants of the Eagles.

A few other teams near the top of the age tree would want to nail a flag in the next year or two.

Hawthorn team for round one.

Gold Coast’s over 29’s are quite a poor group of players, with the exception of Witts.

A lot of Richmond’s seem quite brittle these days. Massive watch to see if they can all get through the season.

I don't know how you can be in "trouble" after winning the flag and will most likely play finals again this year. Yes, I get our list is old, but I would hardly call that "trouble" when we achieved what we wanted to with it.

I would say it should be geared more towards teams that are old or best players are old have have nothing to show for it.

I think Sexton is quite underrated but other than that you are right.

Richmond and Geelong have a rather similar problem as well in that they both have two very good key forwards in Riewoldt/Lynch and Hawkins/Cameron both both sets of key forwards are all over 30. Both Riewoldt/Hawkins will likely retire within the next year or two and and Cameron/Lynch not too far behind that. Not easy replacing two key forwards like that in a short amount of time.

I think my own mob might be in a bit of trouble, age wise. Most of the group are likely to get carded on a night out and some might not be allowed to fly without a parent or guardian.

I genuinely wonder how the demographics of the Hawthorn list compare to that of GWS and Gold Coast in their first year in the competition. I am struggling to think of younger sides.

Yeah that's a fair question and an interesting one at that. I tend to remember GC having some older topup players, but GWS seemed incredibly young - really went the youth route if I'm remembering correctly. I guess the difference might be the expansion sides had a huge influx in a single year of still-teenagers, where ours are spread out over a few years so there's a bit of a spread from 18-22 rather than simply the teens.

great post with the data RUNVS will take some time to dig into it

yes , very much so , as we all too well know , once 30 and over the end can come quickly
The numbers and quality of our senior players is a real concern we have looked to the draft the last two years , now the wait to see how they turn out

We've traded in a lot of elderly players recently. Always surprises me how old the list is nowadays. Out of our 10 only 2 of them were drafted by us as juniours.

The surprising part is that we’ve apparently got a higher average age in 2023 than we did in 2008. **

** I’ve read this a few times, but not verified it myself.

Geelong. We have the same troubling age profile as last year - oh how I wish we were younger and crappier like the 17 teams we torched on our way to the 2022 flag. :sadv1:

Is this photo of geelong's forward line from this year or last?

I just checked and in round 1, 2008 Hawthorn was 23 years and 7 months old. That is definitely on the younger side but it isn't super young. Will be very interesting to see Hawthorn's average age in a few when their team list is released today or tomorrow.

Also just checked, Gold Coast were 22 years and 8 months in their first game and GWS were 21 years and 4 months.

It isn't great to be an old team but if you are an old team you better hope to be at the top of the ladder. It also isn't great to be at the bottom of the ladder but be young, but it is understandable. Being old and being at the bottom of the ladder is the worst combination.
