I liked the final-8 system put in place last year with all the potential crossovers to eliminate the possiblity of finals rematches. I tried to get support for the same system for Major League Soccer here in the States. I really like it.

Final Five is the best finals system, the VFL-AFL has had.

However with only seven matches in the series, it doesn't raise as much revenue as a Final 8 with nine matches.

I prefer it because:
1) It gave the minor premier a greater chance of winning the premership than the other finalists. They minor premier received the first week off, plus a home ground advantage in the second week. If they won that, they automatically went into the Grand Final.

2) 60% of the finalists gain (the top three teams) gain double chances. 50% of the finalists under the final eight gain the double chance. The point is the higher you finished, the greater the chance of winning the premiership. Under the present Final 8, the Top 4 teams have a more equal chance of winning the premiership. Of course a home ground advantage for the Top 2 in the first week of the finals (under the Final 8) might further weight it in their favor.

3) It is actually a greater achievement to make the finals. While 50% of clubs will make the finals under the current Final 8 system, 41% of clubs made it under the Final 5 with five teams and it fell to 35% when there were 14 teams

4) All finalists have a better chance to win the premiership unlike Teams 7 - 8 in the Final 8 and the higher the finish the better the chance. This may seem to some that I am contradicting the second half of my Point 2, but I don't think I am.

I realise the current system probably allows more clubs (and therefore the public) to maintain an interest late in the season, by competing in the finals. However the Final Five, as a pure system seems to me to be the most beautifully balanced one I've ever seen in the VFL-AFL.

but final 8 is more fair

Fairer in what sense? Giving more teams a chance? I think the Final 5 is fairer because the higher you finish on the ladder the more reward there is - especially for the Minor Premiers.

I know there is the argument the Final 8 keeps more sets of supporters interested until the final round as more teams can make it, but everyone knows that 7th and 8th are just making up the numbers anyway.

Finals footy used to be a real step up in intensity from Home & Away footy - I reckon that doesn't happen until the 2nd week of the finals now.

but with the new finals system the 7th and 8th placed teams get to play the 5th and 6th teams
