I was just curious as to which finals system would make a premiership more difficult to win. Let's assume you win the minor premiership.
The Round Robin System
Basically the top 4 teams play off against each other and whoever wins the most games wins. Obviously winning all 3 games gives you the flag but you can also drop one game and still win on percentage. Also if there are 2 draws you can win the premiership with 1 win, 1 loss, 1 draw and percentage (although this is highly unlikely).
This system leaves you with the luxury of being able to lose 1 game and don't have to show up on any particular day knowing you could win the flag even with a loss. However if you do drop this game the results are now beyond your power as the other team might win all 3 and take home the flag even if you win your other games.
The Knockout System (Pre-1940's)
Again just looking at the top 4 teams.
1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3. The losers are automatically eliminated and the winner goes on to the final. If the Minor Premier wins the final they take home the flag, if they lose they play a rematch against the same team, with this resulting in either a premiership or elimination.
This system gives the minor premier the luxury of being able to lose a final and still get a second chance against the same opponent. This makes it easier for the premier yet making it harder for a lower finishing team (having to beat the best side twice). However if they lose their first game they are automatically eliminated and don't get their rematch.
Personally I find the round robin system to be harder for the minor premier as they start on even terms with all other finalists whereas the knockout series the minor premier has an advantage that the other teams don't have. I'd like to hear some other opinions on these two systems.
*Also if I have made any mistakes with the rules of the Knock-out system please let me know.
