Which player(s) do we chase for 2008?

IIRC he was offered as bait last year and there were no takers. I wouldn't be involved in trade talks this year. We don't need to be. We have enough young talent to develop. Thommo coming back releases Petrie back to defence permanently which releases Spud to a back flank or midfield. Swallow will have another pre season of weights behind him, Moran another of development and Campbell, Thomas, Lower, Urquhart, Hansen, Ross, McConnell, Goldstein & Riggio another pre season behind them. We are looking good for the future. No need to upset the applecart with some highly paid inclusion that is only going to stifle the development of what we already have in abundance, young talent.

Maybe we weren't able to trade Brown last year due to the strength of the draft?

Personally i think we have the nucleus of a very good side coming on, Wells, Swallow, McMahon, Hamish,Hale, Harris, Gibson, Spud, Thomas, fingers crossed Grima and maybe Urch.

I'd rather pick up the best avialable young player to fill the gaps in the side; a FB, future tall forward and a pacy midfielder.

For me it would see Brown traded if possible; Eddie gone, Harding gone, Whyman gone, Archer retired, Harvey on the veterans list.

Chase the best mature bodied, tall defender available. Someone who can hold down full back from round 1

As good as Spud has been this year, he's only playing that role out of necessity - and is a make shift key defender.

Personally I'd like to see Petrie at CHB next year. Spud playing off a flank and closer to the middle (where we can use him to smack more bodies, run and use that thumping kick of his inside 50 & to full effect). Thommo @ FF and probably Hale @ CHF. Hansen probably won't have the body to hold down a key defensive spot until 2009.

I agree, which is why I'd already have Tom Collier and Chris Kangars earmarked.

agreed there, we have proved we can kick 100+ points on many occassions this season, a key backman is what we need and it has been proven that a good solid back 6 wins flags.

A lot of clubs have smaller key forwards these days and Spud can play FB on them quite comfortably. Even stitched up Pavlich the other week. There's no doubting his strength, but yeah I agree, that we need someone taller to play on the likes of Brown and free Spud up when needed.

Djars is already yesterday's man on here isn't he? Hardly touched it on Saturday. Had no influence.

He was never today's man.

One good game in how many years does not make an AFL footballer.

Yeah because it was a night made for crumbing forwards.

Why he didn't kick ten is beyond me.

I'm sur[prised Laidley didn't send the runner out and tell him he was delisted mid way through the third term.

To the Doggies- Brown of their 1st round pick

To Collingwood- Brown for their 1st round pick

To Carlton- Brown, Swallow and 2nd Round pick for Marc Murphy

What makes anyone here think Brown can attract a first round draft pick?

We go for the best draft picks and six rookies if possible, game over.

Let's pray thats all the club does do. Surely what we got out of the this past years draft is proof enough of the strategy of going young. Last thing we need is for the club to fall into the Frawley/Richmond trap of thinking we are close and all we need is a couple of players here and there to top it off. We must keep developing via the draft and young players. If anything lets get rid of some players who we dont really need, players such as Brown who could have some value elsewhere albeit no huge value.

Just because we got space in the cap and can afford to pay more for players, doesnt mean we should go ahead and spend it. Go youth and pay them more when they come good.

I think we need to look at a key position forward. Thommo will be 30 next year, coming back after a year off with a knee injury. Hansen doesn't look like he'll be ready and may play down back. Hale is better in the ruck and I'd prefer to play Drew in defence.

I would probably want to keep our picks, but we still should at least look at what is around. Trading picks is a risk, but you have to take risks to win flags. The good thing about this year (if we continue good form and finish high) players on our fringe can up their rating a little.

The value club to look at is Melbourne IMO.
If they get a young coach, their is a big chance they will take the Clarkson road and look to offload some senior players for picks.

I would look closely at

C. Bruce (27 yrs 10 mnths)- Gun. Injured gun, but he would absolutely compliment our midfield. Probably has 4-5 years and if fit is a top 20 player. Would perfectly compliment our midfield and gives us another goal kicking option

T. Johnstone (27yrs 0 mnths) - He is underrated. Has flaws but genuinely influences games when in form. Has been very inconsistent, but so many Dees players have - could very well turn that around as with Harvey and Wells around would lose the tag and would be immersed in a much better culture.

J. Rivers (22yrs 9 mnths) - not old but I reckon question marks have started to be asked over him and the view from outside is not as favourable as that from inside - Melbourne people love him and think he is close to their most important player - which means an outsider coming in might be tempted. Would be great in our backline.

Bruce would be untouchable. Johnstone isn't as good as I once thought, and Rivers would also be untouchable.

Doggies would be a better option i think. Higgins, Hahn, Skipper (as a forward), Gian etc, would all be extremely valuble players.

I definitely don't want to trade for middle of the road players. Potential star or stick to the draft. Higgins would be more untouchable than Bruce.

As I said, if a coach came into Melbourne and assessed the list to be average, with the Dees having an OK young core there is every possibility they would take the Clarkson view and move on guys like Bruce and Johnstone to load up on 1st and 2nd rd picks.
