Sorry mate, had a crack at your "mate in the QAFL" because of your rumour threads yesterday. I was in a bad mood.

Are you a chance to be drafted out of the comp?

Pettard, tippett, warran, proud, dzufer, renoulf, magin, urquart...only a few to mention..and ARMITage

mmm i dunno about a few of those selections....

definates in that group- petterd, proud, armitage, urquhart, renouf
definates you missed - hampson

probables in that group - dzufer, tippet
probables you missed - smith, kiel, grose

i don't think warren and magin will be picked up this year, they both have another year in the system and from what i've heard they haven't done enough this year to get a certain spot but may wait to see how they develop next year

the definites speak for themselves.

the others- tippet i'm unsure about but he is a good KPP prospect i think he will go. heard good reports from his year at southport can take a contested mark and deadly infront of goal.

Dzufer people tend to have mixed opinions so i'm not sure.

Smith played extremely well in the allies game off a HBF showing his running capabilities and that he can play up the ground not just forward. also hear he had a great year on the wing for mt gravatt. like to hear from the mt gravatt guy on here if he can confirm that? i think he will go.

Kiel also played a very good allies game aswell as a good grand final. plays with tippet at southport and had a good year. can play midfield and a run with role and kicks goals. late round pick for mine.

grose good key back with good ability to read the play and not too many around so always in demand.

My opinion from what I've seen of these guys.
Proud - seen a couple of times looks to have the goods and agree top 20
Armitage - knows how to find the footy and no question marks on his courage top 30
Urqhuart - definately has the poise and skills to make it, has been troubled by injuries. Only seen twice and run of half back well against Dandenong and struggled prelim against southport not a lot of game time. Will be drafted i'm sure top 50.
Renouf - have seen alot of him and is a great ruckman, and now with backline to his bow will lift him higher in the draft. Commitment is exemplary and can run all day top 20 definately
Tippett - just what you need is a bloke who can take contested marks and then develop into a ruckman. I think will have a similar afl transition like paul salmon, start full forward and then develop. My tip is Collingwood might take him now they have two rop 10 picks, if not Sydney. First round pick.
Petterd - good leadership material, will be good of hbf or wing to start off and then move to midfield top 30
Kiel - has the class of all the smalls in QLD, and has the ability to do a number of rolls, from midfield to tagging to goal sneak.Similar style to Andrew raines. doesnt get to many mentions but to be invited to draft camp twice you know someone interested. top 50
Dzufer - seen a few times and obviously can play and given important rolls for zillmere plays sunny coast in state and is definately one of their key players, once again invited to draft camp twice so he's being looked at top 70
Smith- same as Dzufer plays sunny coast and is definately there forward target and has a good body structure. Sounds like fitness has improved, certainly has ability shown in QLD. hope he gets drafted but definately rookie.
Hampson- big blokes dont grow on trees and even though renouf is the best ruck in QLD this bloke will come under consideration. likely drafted definate rookie

Warren - not this year and i think to young to be rookied

White - struggled to make southport seniors latter half of the year after being injured, question mark over fitness, just not sure, but been to draft camp twice - rookie list

Grose - havent seen to much cant really comment

Probably 8 QLDers drafted 3 rookied from the 13 that went to camp

IMO it will be;

A.Proud-top 10
D.Aritage-top 20
R. Petterd-top 20
K.Tippet-top 30
G. Urquhart-top 30
B.Renouf-top 50
D.Dzufer-top 50
J.White-top 60

Rookies
S.Hampson
C.Smith
S.Kiel

Five players measured in at over 200cm at draft camp, three come from QLD..pretty unusual.

Seems to be a lot of differing opinions on who will be the first QLD player call out. Will the Brisbane Lions pluck one from their home state at pick 4?

I have seen all these boys play for a number of years now and this is how i see it.

Proud - we all know about
armitage - we all know about
petterd - we all know about

Urquhart - Medium/tall mid he has a super kick on him and has good ability to read the play. has had alot of trouble the past 2 seasons with osteitis pubis and hamstring problems which has limited him. plays for morningside in the QAFL.

Tippet - New to the football scene, was a QLD basketball representative. has a good frame on him and can be KPP forward or ruck. seems to have reasonably good athletic attributes for a big man. can take a good contested mark and usually is accurate in front of goal.

Dzufer - plays for zillmere in QAFL and spent most of the year on the wing where i think he struggled. was moved to half back in the finals series and was alot better. covers the ground well and can take a grab. struggles to find a target around the ground but is accurate in front of the goals. all australian selection this year at the national championships where he had a terrific carnival. draft camp invitee twice. my main worry is that his results this year seem to be worse than last year but his 3k time is still
good.

Smith - plays for mt gravatt in QAFL. played on the wing all year for mt gravatt and did it very well. has a good running capacity. accumulates possesions and disposal is very good kicks goals as a mid. has good speed and runs and carries the ball breaking the lines often gaining 60m+ befor kicking. played as a leading forward in the championships kicking 12goals in the 3 games. from what i hear also played a very good game for the allies where he ran off half back. very good mark and strong body. reads the play well.

Kiel - Southport player in the QAFL mainly playing in the middle. has a good engine and finds plenty of the ball. had a terrific game in the grand final kicking 3 goals in crucial parts of the game. ran off half back in the national championships and was a key player. from memory was more of a run with player in last years championships where he shut down key opponents whilst gathering possessions himself. this year was his second appearance at draft camp where i hear he performed better than last year which is a bonus as recruiters like to see improvement.

Hampson - Bit of a revelation this year storming onto the scene. Has improved drastically within the year. very quick for a boy of his size and his skills are also very good. played 1st ruck for mt gravatt in the QAFL. good frame to build on. tested very well at draft camp. has a soccer background befor converting to AFL.

white - another southport player. very versatile. has shown he can play in the ruck, forward as well as down back. was very impressive at the nationals playing at centre half back. showed poise. strong body and uses it very well. tested very good at draft camp and seems to have increased his running capacity. can play in the ruck but i think he is more suited to KPP areas. takes a good mark and disposal is very good. his improvement from last year has been very good.

renouf - another tall from southport. was predominatly first ruck for the year but showed tremendous versatility in the grand final where he went to half back and played a tremendous game. had outstanding endurance results at draft camp for a big man. likes to push forward and kick a goal and is very accurate. i like the look of him drifting back in the backline looks very solid. was a AIS scholarship holder this year.

Footysmarts, do you have knowledge of this years draft results with these guys, just interested in how the endurance times of some of the big blokes went apart from renouf. Dont expect actual times as that would not be fair to the guys but were they breaking 12 mins for 3km trial.
Also, you do seem to have knowledge on the guys, without all the hype of the forum, of your personal viewing what order would you have the 7 smaller guys and the 4 big blokes from your list.

from the information i have recieved, tippet took no part in the endurance testing due to a stomach virus, hampson ran around 13.5 for the beep and white was around 13.3 In the 3k i hampson was the next QLD tall to come in behind renouf and then it was white. both hampson and white ran reasonable 3k times but yes they were over shadowed by renoufs performance. as far as ranking the boys this is how i would see it:

TALLS
renouf
hampson
tippet
white
*tippet is a hard one to pick he may go earlier or later it is hard to tell. he has certainly shown alot and has a big enough body that he could start playing as a KPP in the AFL next year.

MEDIUMS
armitage
proud
petterd
urquart
smith/kiel
dzufer
* smith and kiel is a hard one both extremely talented players and have had a good year. i might have smith just a touch in front of kiel as i have seen him play in numerous roles this year (forward, mid, back) and he has been damaging to the opposition no matter what position he has lined up in. this however is to take nothing away from kiel, he is a very damaging player and can influence the out come of a game. hard to split.

If anyone is interested, I just posted this yesterday in a thread on the Brissy Lions board.
--------------------------------------

To be honest, I have seen more games played by the Gold Coast draft hopefulls than Brissy players but I will do my best.

My overall ranking- (Only my humble opinion, and opinions will vary. There may be a few surprises here that go against the grain)

1) Kurt Tippett (Southport)
Key position. FF/Ruck.
Another basketball convert. Maybe a touch of Southport bias here but I am very impressed by this bloke and the best QLD'er I have seen this year. Very agile for a big man and quick on the lead. Can take a contested mark and is good in front of goal. Plays in the ruck as well and does that well. Huge scope for improvement. Have a feeling he may be snapped up early.

2) David Armitage (M'side)
Midfielder or Half back/forward
Tough and courageous. His stocks have risen after testing very well at the recent draft camp. A ball magnet. Likely to go first round. I have no doubt the Lions would take him if their pick was at 8-12.

3) Brent Renouf (Southport)
Ruckman/key position
Fantastic ruckman who runs all day. There is no doubt in my mind he will play at least 100 games of AFL football. Great commitment.

4) Albert Proud (Mt Gravatt)
Midfielder
Pacey and knows how to find the ball. Has the goods but tends to drift in and out of games. Question mark over his discipline on and off the field.

5) Haydn Kiel (Southport)
Midfielder/winger
For some reason is not rated as highly as Petterd or Armitage but I rate the bloke hugely. Has pace, agility and is highly skilled. Has a Justin Sherman type of build. I think he tends in drift in and out of games but has all the right attributes. Out of all the Southport draft hopefulls, he finished the higest in the club's best and fairest. I will be watching draft day with interest and desperately hopes he is picked up. He deserves it. Will be a real bargain for whoever takes him because I think he will go late if at all. Very damaging.

6) Ricky Petterd (Broadbeach)
Midfielder/on-baller
Rated highly down south after featuring for QLD at the U/18 c'ship and won the Division 2 medal. Is very smooth and has leadership qualities. Will probably go in the second round. I have seen quite a lot of him this year, and while he has been good, he has been fairly quiet for Broadbeach this year in the games I have seen.

7) Gavin Urquhart (M'side)
Midfielder/defender
Haven't seen enough of him to make a proper judgement. Has been troubled by injuries this year but has the skill to make it. Should be taken late. High possession winner.

8) Daniel Dzufer (Zillmere)
Half Forward Flank/Wingman
He has slipped off the radar a little bit and I think he is a likely rookie list prospect for Brissy. Kicking is inconsistent.

I'll do the same as Nick and rank the Queenslanders in the order in which I rate them - not necessarily the order that I expect them to be drafted. I didn't see the last two AFLQ finals of the season but have seen enough of most of the Queenslanders to provide a (very limited) opinion of them!

1. Armitage - I think he has enough of the required attributes to become the best midfielder Queensland has produced in quite a few years. He is skilful, athletic and tough. I'd take him with anything from about pick 8 on.

2. Renouf - I always considered him the best tall from Queensland this year but his late season performances for Southport put him in a different league. If he was beaten in one aspect of his game, he simply influenced the game somewhere else. He probably won't go top 10 this year but most other years he would be a big show. A top 15 player in my rankings.

3. Proud - I only leave him ranked 3rd because of his potential. An injury riddled season when he could least afford it changes my ranking of him in comparison to others. On reputation, he would be the first Queenslander picked. I wouldn't pick him if I had a top 10 pick. Top 20 only.

4. Hampson - This one is based on the opinion of someone who knows a little bit about Mt Gravatt footballers and, to a lesser extent, the couple of times I watched him play. I would take him with any pick after about pick 25 because he is athetic enough and skilful enough for a ruckman and certainly has the physical characteristics.

5. Smith. If we took Smith with our Aker pick (34), I would not be upset although realistically he would probably be available at our 3rd or 4th rounder and would be a wasted pick at 34. There's a bit of magic with him that makes him stand out from the others and he is a midfielder who kicked bags of goals at the carnival. Given the midfield quality Qld had at the carnival this year, I don't hold it against him that he barely had a run on ball. In my top 30.

6. Tippett. There is a chance the Paul Salmon comparison will hold in which case Tippett may well be the bolter. I rank him as a top 50 player but I cannot decide whether there is room for a Salmon type full forward in today's game. Ottens is the only player I can think of who has Tippett's dimensions and holds down a key forward post regularly - even someone like Nathan Thompson is about 5cm shorter. On rucking alone, I wouldn't take Tippett with a top 50 pick. But if his form as a forward holds, then he would be worthy of a top 15 spot. Somewhere between 40 and 50 IMO.

7. Petterd. His carnival form was top 10 material but on my limited viewings his local form was not as good as most on this list. He'll go higher than I have rated him because of that carnival form but I have doubts over his effectiveness when he has less time. Top 50. Being a local boy, I wouldn't be too concerned if Brisbane took him at 38 but I prefer others.

8. Dzufer. Dzufer's time trial results lifted him from a probable rookie to a probable draftee IMO. He does read the play well and he is a very good size. I thought he was a bit too "in-between" in size but his camp results persuaded me that recruiters may now see his additional size for an on-ball type as an advantage. In the local footy, he stepped up in every final which is a good sign as far as attitude goes. Another top 50 candidate.

9. Urquhart. I really haven't seen a lot of him. He has looked OK when I have seen him and I know he is highly rated by some but there is something I can't quite put my finger on that means that I don't share that opinion. Undoubtedly will be drafted but I wouldn't use anything higher than a 4th rounder for him.

10. Kiel. After a glowing endorsement by Nick a few weeks ago, I spoke to a couple of people regarding Kiel. There are apparently a couple of clubs interested including Brisbane although they tend to follow all the local boys. He'll be on the rookie list at Brisbane and may sneak it for a very late pick.
