Are they now? Providing some insight no matter how broad would be nice for supporters. or even if they dribbled garbage, most ignorant people would think it's great anyway and beleive what they say, even if it's rubbish.

He may as well declined the interview because it was a waste of time, slightly embarrassing. Sometimes the key is being wordsmith, where you say something but aren't saying anything and therefore everyone is happy! Especially the ignorant ones.

Sounds like Choco but not sure everyone was happy after he sprouted garbage that had no relevance whatsoever to the original question. He was entertaining at times, cringeworthy at others and I would rather nothing was said, or as the saying goes, play with a straight bat and give NOTHING but that is a personal preference and I can understand some supporters hungry for info from the club. Not sure it would be the best thing for the club and the one thing I have been fairly pleased with so far under Matty is the relative 'quiet' coming from our club.

Is that what we need though as a club quiet?

After everything we are going through, surely as a club we need some personality and bang to attract people to us. The most important aspect is obviously winning, so let's hope Matty starts there, but some public PR wouldn't go astray.

I think certain people are misconstrueing what I am saying. I didn't want Geoff Parker to come out and say we are hoping to draft a Ruck, or a mid and we are hoping Polec and Smith slide. Everyone knows that anyway :)

But to me the interview was such a wet blanket it did nothing to build interest with our supporters. The only informative comment was the AFL are looking for players with kicking skills, I haven't heard that before

I am of the opinion, when someone from the club is in the media, make the interview at least interesting to hear to spark some interest in our club. When I say something rather than nothing. He could have had a dab at possible sliders but even lie about it to play some games. For example Port may have no interest in Lycett. he could have said we anticipate mid's to be popular, so the rucks like Gorridge/Lycett could fall down the pecking order.

Or the defeciency with Player X is this or taking players from this area is a risk due to them being weened off their mothers milk!

Who knows, but say something. Talk about Romans and wild goats :)

Rendell may be a tool, but at least he generates interest and talking points. Sometimes any PR is good PR. We need people talking about us, but not about how hapless our crowds and finances are.

I am on Matty's train, I hope he produces the goods, I really do. I am also hoping backing i nthis same playing group works, it's almost Geelongesq, it's their time to stand up and show something 2011.

Choco had bang and personality by the bucketload. Is that what we need again? not sure...my opinion is different to yours and that's OK.

The most important part for us at this point is building a culture within the club that exudes solidarity and singlemindedness towards being winners. Sprouting garbage like Rendell (or like Choco of past years), well again IMO it isn't what I expect us to be doing.

No matter what Parker said in that interview, it more than likely wouldn't have attracted 1 single additional member or contributed to the perception for outsiders to think that 'hey, PAFC are going about it the right way'.

Hell even when someone who is supposed to sprout positives (Rhode) comes out in the media and he explains how we basically targeted a player in trade week and basically got him for free, we get sh!tcanned.

Rick I love your passion, love the fact that you want action taken over the ineptitude of our last 3-4 years and are willing to voice it for all to hear. I dont agree that we should have our recruiting manager sprouting garbage so that we can maybe get some positive bang. Let's leave that for the Rendells of the footy world.

I would rather the club would keep it simple, play the straight bat and work hard at ensuring our people in key areas perform and reach their performance targets.

Public PR? Is that like an ATM Machine? :p

I agree with your point though especially from a sponsorship point of view. With lower than average membership numbers/crowds/TV audiences we aren't exactly the most attractive club to sponsor at the moment because we can't provide the exposure that other clubs can deliver. But having someone (doesn't have to be the coach, could be the president) who can have strong opinions in the media and attract attention without being too much of a w***er about it (i.e. we don't want Choco Jnr) could help us get some more exposure and divert attention away from negative issues.

You don't want to create a destabilizing force in the club but you also don't want to get buried under a mountain of boring cliches where no-one will find you (don't you just love shit like "we've got a young developing list at the moment but we're confident that we can make positive improvements moving forward"....means sweet FA and does nothing but make you blend in with the wallpaper) . You need to find a middle ground that helps the club stand out from the crowd a bit so that we get punch above our weight sponsorship-wise.

I think you will find that this was the first Media interview done by Geoff pre-draft. Geoff is not one to waffle on for the sake of waffling on and would much prefer to get down and do his job than get involved in self promotion or chest beating.

I haven't heard the interview so I cant comment on the intervies but really when Rendell was on Rowey kept shooting names at him and Rendell basically said yes to each one.

Personally I dont care what he is like in the media as long as he is good at what he does and I have faith in him to be good at that.

Different topic, sort of, who is Geoff Parker anyway? What's his background with footy? Do you know or anyone else for that matter? He's a name I really haven't heard before or taken notice of.

Can one of you blokes set me straight please?:

- I think currently that you have 34 players on your main list plus 2 vets plus 4 rookies thus giving you 4 draft picks to use (16,34*,35*,51*), but i believe that Hitchcock is still on your rookie list, therefore if he is upgraded to your main list then either another player needs to be delisted or you would only use 3 draft picks (16,34,35).
I would have thought that you would use pick 51* in this draft.
If so, is Hitchcock contracted for 2011 &/or has there been any indication that he has agreed to stay as a rookie or that the club will upgrade him?

Phhttt I never rated Choco publically, I thought most of the stuff he came out with was dribble and embarrassing, probably a tad harsh, but it was like he was a poor man's Sheedy/Malthouse.

Rick the best bit about Choco's media work was that he at times could be entertaining. But like you I at times thought he would dribble sh!t and sometimes was a tad embarassing. Not arrogant (which would have been OK), just embarassing.

But I really do think that he tried his hardest to promote the club. It wasn't always the right way and often he would say something without saying anything or just dribble on about stuff that was totally off topic or irrelevant to the topic at hand.

It's one reason I like the relative 'quiet' from Port lately. I just want us to be seen as putting our nose to the grindstone and working hard at getting us back to where we should be. I want the media to be writing/covering Port because of what we are achieving and not because a media outlet feels obligated to cover us so that they think that they appear unbiased.

As I said, let Rendell dribble his crappola.

The thing I never liked about Choco was his total contempt for the media and therefore we never ever got any insight in after match press conferences except for either two or three word comments or smart arse 'yeah...well...we won contested possession and hard ball gets' type stuff.

Countdown to D-day

AFL.com.au has written up an article suggesting what the clubs needs are and who we might take. Clearly they have no idea since they think we will take a ruckman with pick 16 when we refused to trade for Jacobs. Might be why they labeled the article written by "staff reporters".

Link

Dream selection: Port Adelaide Magpies ruckman Scott Lycett has been mentioned at pick No.16, but the Power might surprise and take a small instead. SA under-18 MVP Brodie Smith could slip through, while Ben Jacobs (Sandringham Dragons), Luke Parker (Dandenong Stingrays) and Geelong's Jayden Pitt all possess the necessary kicking skills to lift the club's maligned efficiency rate.

Re: Countdown to D-day

Lycett has been a convenient link to Port for a while, altho some of the more recent phantom drafts have thought outside the box there and had him sliding. Most PDs have a different player linked to us at 16 - Jacobs, Parker, Lycett, Guthrie, McCarthy are a few (and that's overlooking Darling as a slider or Hallahan) - so that indicates some decent depth at that pick and an uncertainty about how we will jump.

Lycett was very highly thought of not so long ago, but he seems to have slipped at least among the draft fiends. He is a talent, it's up to the club to decide how many 200+cm project ruckmen we want on the list.

Hate to be one of those people who bases their opinions solely on YouTube videos, but Jed Lamb sure looks impressive.

An analysis of the last 10 years drafts shows that unless a ruckman is outstanding (eg Kruezer or Natinui) then a selection at pick 8 or 18 is as good as 28.

Forget a ruckman - go for a midfielder with our first pick.

I hadn't looked into Kieran Harper at all cos he seems to be all over the place in phantom drafts... but if he's available at 16, ay caramba, he seems to be exactly what we're looking for - speedy outside mid who can kick goals.

That is one very decent game that Harper played against WA!

Bar some sprayed shots on goal, the kid displayed alot of very good attributes. Good-sized body for a small-medium player, good chase, tackle and bump, great positioning for shots on goal, decent speed and contested ball winning at speed, good handball release in the tackle, decent mark and kick and some attitude!

Looks like he is going to be a good pick-up for someone around 15-30!

I think this draft will be very interesting to see who goes where. As it stands
Swallo
Bennel
Day
then
West Coast who will they go with polec,Gaff,Hepell etc(caddy has also risen with his ND results)
Brisbane ^
Richmond will they go for Lynch a gun key forward or a midfeilder?(
lynch has been touted top 5 player)
Gold Coast might go for gorringe with 7 but they could go for smith or atley this draft will be very interesting imo picks 9 10 and 11 will be interesting will Gc go 3 kpp mcarthy watson smedts etc.
I think smith will end up at the crows though :(.
Interesting yr thats for sure

If you want info on the draftees check out Knightmare's 2010 Mock Draft.

He has Harper going before our pick:

#13 (Gold Coast) – Kieran Harper (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 5/06/1992
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
Style: Steve Johnson
Range: 9-29
Why: HFF/ outside mid. A guy who you just naturally love watching play. Special player who simply knows where the goals are. Classy ball user who also has a burst of speed. Everything he does is quality. Reminds me of a Steve Johnson in many respects. Has had a few injury problems and probably didn’t quite have the season many hoped he would have with some inconsistent performances. Probably doesn’t get enough of his own ball or get enough of it for my liking and the fact that he does have the feel of a flanker rather than a midfielder might put some off but despite all this I think Harper has all the attributes to become a very successful player at AFL level and I think he could become a star of the competition in the right team.

Liked Harper's clean hands and bit of attitude. Looks a decent footballer. But the queries on injuries, and that he's a flanker that could become a mid ring warning bells. The collective wisdom makes it looks like he will go before our pick.

Hard to tell from a few minutes of youtube, but there seems to be a lot of flankers in that group. Good for stats but probably not what we need. Hallahan looks a more likely genuine traffic mid, a convertible like Darling or a genuine tall like Lycett who has dropped off the radar but could be anything in a few years might be a better fit.
