Who is best contested marker in afl?

For a 20 year old, Riley Thilthorpe is a bloody great contested mark as witnessed yesterday. In the elite status for 2023 which is remarkable considering his age - once again, being an interstater, the footy media in Vic doesn’t drool over him.

I was super impressed when I watched Tex Walker the other week. His contested marking was much better than i'd remembered. And what was so good about it, is he's not as tall as some of the other guys mentioned here. For example, Curnow took lots of contested marks on Saturday, but often his height enabled him to have a clear grab of the ball. Tex was often clunking them with the defender having a fair bit of contact with the ball and hands.

Naughton is also fantastic. Just a pity he can't kick straight!

I think he's bloody awesome but he doesn't have the runs on the board yet.

Tex n Charlie the same height!

Tex n Charlie the same height!
Thanks, I was wondering how they compared - Charlie does seem to have a longer reach though, but still i guess my point was when watching Tex this other day I saw him take several tough contested marks out in front or at the 45, defenders had mits all over his hands and the ball but he still held on. I'm not saying Charlie isnt a great mark, but several of his contested marks on the weekend, his hands were much more clear of defenders. Either way they both great, I just think tex is right up there

Often forgotten about but in his earlier years, Walker was tracking along as one one of the top three forwards in the game. Literally had no weakness and his marking was arguably the most impressive asset.

He sustained an ACL injury and I recall he was never the same player afterward. Still better than most but he lost that ability to twist and turn and propel himself up into marking contests.

It's remarkable how far science has come along because 20 years earlier, an ACL would invariably impact an athletes career to the point they retire early.
Today, you almost have a 50/50 chance of returning to the player you were pre-injury, or you can go the Walker route where you are still exceptional, but lose a noticeable step in your athletic profile.

Isn't that what makes him a great contested mark? Out reaching taller opponents. Not sure why Barass didn't play on him all night.

These are the averages of the last 2 seasons and 2023 so far. Probably ignore Mitch Lewis as he has only played one game this year and also Chris Burgess in 2022. Harry McKay has been on that list each of the last 3 years and King, Gawn, and Dixon 2 of the last 3. King of course is yet to play in 2023

My personal top 5 in no order are:
  • Harry Mckay (Career avg 2.2 contested marks pg)
  • Max King (Career avg 2.1 contested marks pg)
  • Tom Lynch (Career avg 2.1 contested marks pg)
  • Max Gawn (Career avg 2.0 contested marks pg)
  • Charlie Curnow (Career avg 1.8 contested marks pg)
Edit: Dixon should probably be considered in the top 5 as well, hard to split him with Curnow over their career (1.8 vs 1.9 career avg) Curnow takes it based on current form and scope for further improvement.

I'd also like to see a combined CM + Frees drawn i50

Sometimes the only reason why the CM isn't counted is because the defender infringed out of fear etc. I daresay all the top 5 draw frees but it'd be interesting to see.

I would love to see this but unless you work for CD I'm not sure how to get hold of it.

I reckon Levi Casboult is the best I have seen in the last 20 years or so.
If he could kick straight would be a hell of a player. Jones at Carlton is better than he gets credit for.
I think on a lot of footy fans on the East Coast might have missed just how incredible Nat Fyfe was at his peak. There was a couple of years there where he was leading contested marks in the comp - as a midfielder! Such a shame his career has been impacted by injuries over the last 3 years.

depends on how you look at it. I guess im thinking if someone can mark the ball under greater pressure they're a stronger marker. Having to rely on your reach doesnt necessarily mean you're better but really we're splitting hairs.
