Who should replace McGregor?

Hard one. McGregor is nothing more than an honest CHB, but we still have no one better. I've wondered about the idea of Stevens at CHB, Carey CHF and Perrie FF. However, going on the last two weeks I don't think Carey is up resuming playing CHF - not yet anyway, maybe not ever again - and Perrie has had two shockers at full forward, and Stevens was superb up forward today, even his kicking for goal! So scratch that idea. ;)

I've only seen Rutten in this year's pre-season matches - and even then I think he only played up forward. Parker I haven't seen and isn't on our list anyway. Hentchel doesn't look to be strong enough to play on most CHFs. Schell is a pussy, forget about him. I'm unsure of Marsh's defensive capabilities.

Out of that lot I'd say Perrie. Perhaps playing him in defence will get his confidence back. I do wonder why you didn't nominate Nigel Smart though, he's shown he can take on big forwards in the past.

Good analysis Dave. It could only be Perrie or Rutten with Perrie the most likely.

They did say on the radio that the Crows expect him to play next week. I hope so.

I was thinking about putting him in but decided against it as I would prefer us to actually have a true KPP replace Ken IF he misses agaist West Coast.

IMHO Perrie is not a close checking defender. I wouldn't back Perrie against the players that I would back Ken McGregor. I would probably lean towards Rutten on this one.

Altough Perrie has played CHB before I'd at least try young Rutten, he seems to have the bulk and ability - it seems he's being held back a bit longer until he develops his game a bit . I still fell it couldn't hurt to try him as plan A, then perhaps look to Perrie or Stevo as plan B or perhaps Smart- depending on who is playing CHF

I'd prefer to keep Stevo and Perrie up forward, altough Perrie didn't do much this week you could say the same about Stevo last week....and he put in a BOG performance today so perhaps next week will be Perrie's week!

So after all that dribble its Rutten for me!

Now how come I get the feeling that, had I said that on here, I would get crucified? :D

He/she is the only decent one, right?

Kenny's terrible... when I heard he was out of the side on Sunday I did a cartwheel and was in absolutely no doubt that we'd win.

But seriously, a top notch key defender is something we've lacked since Cavo retired and has to be a priority at the end of the season as it's our only real weak point on the field.

But who could we get? Salary-cap concerns and having to trade quality to get quality won't see someone like Sean Wellman come home, so unless we can draft and mould a gun soon the problem won't be solved in the near future.

I still can't understand why we didn't go in for a Wakelin twin or two when they left the Saints.

I can't agree with this view of McGregor. I reckon he has been very good since becoming our regular CHB, and has rarely been beaten.

Just for interest's sake, can you name 3 CHF's that have given him trouble?? Or many bad games that he has played at CHB?? When was the last time that he played a very poor one??

You don't have to agree with it.

It's not just the CHF's he comes up against but his general performance on the field. He has absolutely no presence and has all the football smarts of a member of the Collingwood cheersquad.

No, I couldn't name any individual games off-hand but I can't remember ever coming away from a game thinking "gee didn't Kenny Mac give Tredrea/A. Rocca/Lucas/Brown etc a touch up today"... also can't remember any games where he's ever been in our best players either.

McGregor usually beats Brown fair and square. He did it last year Round 9 against Brisbane, when he was named in best players. If you go back to Round 22 last year against Freo, Kenny was in our best players with some 25 possesions and 6-7 marks.

BTW, you will hardly find a true CHB being named in best players in any of the papers unless they play a blinder.

Kenny is no star but he is a solid CHB who does a reasonably good job week in week out.

Round 10 against Brisbane... who put him in the best players? The Advertiser? He was servicable, nothing more.

Everyone had a blinder that day, including that fat trainer McGuinness punched out back in 1992. Besides which, it was Freo.

That's a given, but it never stopped Jakovich, Cavo, Sexton, Leppitsch, etc etc...

The fact is we have to improve down back. Premiership sides rarely win with a poor spine, and unfortunately and realistically there are one or two weak links.

I was happy with McGregor's season last year. I felt he was very servicable. I was expecting more improvement from him this season. However I have so far been disappointed with his form in the Wizard Cup and first two rounds.

As long as he does his job in keeping his opponent under control I'll be happy. I thought he played well in Wizard Cup GF by negating Anthony Rocca. Rocca had no influence what so ever when he was in the forward line. I know our midfield helped him out by winning more of the ball but when ever the ball went towards Rocca McGregor was there to spoil.

As I said, he will never be a star CHB or AA, but he will be an honest player that will do his job week in week out. I am not concerned about our CHB for the future as I believe Kenny will be good enough to play some solid footy as our regular CHB. My major worries are FB, CHF that will take over from Stevo and Ruckman to take over from Clarke.
