Who thinks Channel 9 sux?

At least you Victorians get camerawork and commentary. We get no coverage at all in Sydney tonight. Nothing. Zilch. Zero.
Don't like these new TV arrangements. Bring back 7.

First time I've ever had the 'pleasure' of hearing Ed commentate. Don't think I've missed much. Besides Tim lane, I thought all commentators were pretty poor.
Some of the 'new and exciting' camera angles just don't work - the above ground kinda one looks like ants, especially with the similarity of the two teams jumpers, and the ground level camera is ok for slo-mo but when live it's no good. No time clock at all - it's better than the countdown, but at least we could see how much time has gone?
Tony Jones (WHO???) brought all the personality of a waterlogged gumboot to proceedings, and why oh why do we have to go to Dr Peter Larkins (WHO?????) every 2 minutes on the boundary? He's already as annoying (and as unnecessary) as the 4th umpire John Russo after one game.
Overall, very disappointing, hopefully Ch10 are a big improvement.

I actually dont think Eddie is such a bad TV commentator (I cant believe im saying this!). Dermie has always given me the you-know-whats! He just loves talking about his beloved 'zones' doesn't he. Gary sounds like he's having a casual chat at a cocktail party all the time - really has the most uninspiring voice.

Im also watching FoxSports coverage of Freo v Western. I cant stand those black T-Shirts all the presenters wear, they look like a bunch of nightclub bouncers. Dennis Cometti is a pretty good commentator though.

Fat Ed sucks as a play-by-play man (always has), he should stick to hosting and reading the autocue

Nine should of stuck with their original plan of having Tim Lane and Cometti as their callers and Fat Ed being the host

Channel 9's coverage tonight was far superior to what channel 7 served up to us. The commentry was fine, Dermie talked a little too much, but he's always done that.

I liked the selective hearing of the umpires. You hear what's important without hearing the 'play on, play on' when ch7 tried it.

Camerawork was as good or better that ch7. I liked the use of the low angle looking down the ground at the play, like ch7 used to use many years ago. They probably used it a touch too much. I thought they got the balance right in the second half.

It seems to me that no matter how good ch9's coverage is, people will still complain about nothing.

Since when did ch7 have a reverse angle camera for kicks on goal on the opposite site during the season, let alone the pre-season?
The answer is of course never

The ch9 coverage made you feel much more part of the action. I thought they did an excellent job.

The camera work didn't seem a whole lot different to me but Dermott Brereton and Gary Lyon were extremely annoying with the special comments!

Cheers

You're right on the first point, now that I think about it. It was used as far back as the 1970 Grand Final.

And I as wrote on a similar thread, the reverse angle camera kicks on the opposite side is the one innovative idea that they introduced last night. It seems so obvious that one wonders why someone didn't think of it before. It's the equivilent of when cricket was covered from both ends of the ground for the first time.

Ch7 did use it, but like most of their innovations, they only bothered using one for big matches or finals matches. For how many years did ch7 only use a behind goals camera in finals matches? I'd say about 25 years, yet they only consistantly used one in home and away matches for about the last two years. Not good enough.

Channel 9's coverage was pretty good, better than 7's at least.

The need to use the Reverse Angle camera after goal is scored though.

Too many shots from the ground level camera were taken from the back of the player with the ball. It should be taken infront of him.

But hopefully 9 can iron these things out.

It was a decent first up go.

Eddie is actually a fair commentator. Dermott actually knows what he is talking about. Tim Lane is one of the best in the biz, and Lyon - well, he does give me the sh*ts.

Camera work was a little down on Seven's, but that'll improve. Give them a week or two, and they'll be right.

The Hitman

I thought it was crap....over in Perth we got the Freo, Bulldogs game and although Cometti was his usual best the other two sucked....one was Ben Allan doing the special comments....he was awful but i cant remember who the other caller was. It was bad anyway. Ill give it a few weeks and ill see more games but right now im missing 7.

The low angle shot can go. It's counter-intuitive to the way we all watch the football. Switching between long shots and close-ups from the same position is okay, because we've already established where everyone is in a contest, but changing the angle when cutting to that low angle shot is more disrupting than anything else. Get rid of it.

McGuire immediately slipped into McAveney mode by trying to invent excitement on a couple of occasions. Memo to everyone: we don't need you to sell the game to us. We know when it's good, we know when it's rubbish, we know when to get excited. Lane was typically assured (apart from some early radio calling, he toned down after the second stint), Brereton once again pilloried for trying to actually tell you something you can't see - perhaps he's a bit pontificating when he does it, but at least he's better than the "special comments" blokes who do nothing more than state the bleeding obvious.

i sooooo agree!!!
Tim Lane is a legend but oh my god the rests of them!!!
adn what is with the graffics???
and when they say the interchange, they don't even say for which team!!!
hopefully ten will be better!

early days

its early days for all 3 broadcasters and like the teams they are just brushing off the cobwebs.tim lane is now the king of the commentators now that bruce has "retired" and he showed last night why his talents were wasted to just radio.
edward i.ll give him a few more games before making any comment about his commentry.
dermie and lyon i dont mind at all.
however over on foxtel could someone tell ben allan that calling the players by there 1st name isnt the thing to do.
jason bennett i think thats his name was quite impressive clear and precise while dennis cometti[2nd to lane] was just dennis once again.
as for ch10 if there promo is anything to go for it could be a longggggggggggggggg frustrating winter.

cheers!

I though Eddie was good without being brilliant. Tim Lane is the best in the business. Two special comments men is one too many. The camerawork was ok but nothing positive or negative IMO.

I'm not sure what we should all expect really. There aint much that can be done except follow a ball with a few cameras and call what's happening without over analysing the obvious.

Me!! I'm sick of Eddie's voice already.

There was also a good point in the Herald Sun yesterday....when Eddie is commentating Collingwood games, will he get fined by the AFL for questioning an umpire's decision?
