Years ago the umpire used to have to get a wave of 'okay' from the captains of both sides before bouncing the ball for the first time. It is a good point, are sides required to have a captain on the ground under the rules?

^^^Not sure.

It used to be that only the captain can call for a player count, but I'm pretty sure this rule went out the window with the new interchange system.

Also there was a rule that only the captain can approach the umpires during the quarter, half or three-quarter time breaks and ask them to clarify their decisions. I'm not sure if this one is still there but if it was then I guess it stands to reason that teams need a specificed captain out there.

Yes, I remember that. And both rugby codes have rules about Captains questioning referees, and referees calling in Captains to give instructions (like: "The next player on your side to decapitate another opposition player will be spoken to sternly". (I played rugby - I loved it; so polite. :D)

So are there any onfield duties a Captain is required for? When the final team card is handed in to whoever (and we know there will be a $20,000 fine unless it is right - THANK YOU, THE POWER OF BETTING AGENCIES), is there a requirement that 1 of the players is designated Captain?
