Gibbs.

Against Freo last year, Bryce was terrific as the pivot who was used to move the ball from the backline to the forwardline. I doubt that Murphy would be as successfull in that role as the target for the switch. Marc isn't a great long kick and good in the air like Gibbs. Bryce reads the play as well as Judd who is our best option for the switch. We shouldn't underestimate how hard Gibbs runs to get free after he see the plays unfolding. Bryce took a lazy 11 marks against Freo. Judd-like one touch pick up under pressure and kick across the body from 45 that should have sailed through.

Reckon Zac and Davies could make two good wingman with their legspeed, hardness, size and long kicking. Loved Davies dishing out a don't argue to Duffield before releasing the ball.

It's very hard to get a good read on McLean until the practice matches start.

Id play him in every NAB cup came and practice match (injury and soreness withstanding).

Lets make this thing work.

From what I understand, the club and McLean are going to give it a really good crack of getting him right into the midfield rotations. Will get his chances in the NAB series, and if he performs, will be given a chance early on.

Very good thread guys and great to see some of the observations of those who are able to get along to training.

Particularly pleased to see the positives about McLean and Joseph.

I would love to see McLean stick it to the knockers on this forum who can't help but remind us of "one of the worst trades in history" and, lets face it, more than a few are our own supporters.

I have always had a wrap on Joseph and great to hear that he is training well. I think his first couple of years in the game mirror those of Ratts. Negating role for a few years (there was even talk that we were trying to trade Ratts in '94) before moving to the middle and, in Ratts case, resulted in a B&F in a premiership year.

I don't think he has the smarts that Ratts had but he is quicker and more athletic. I would love to see him moved in before both Ellard and Curnow as I think he has an X factor that they don't.

Really looking forward to the year and the surprises the m/c spring on us. I don't think that they've got much wrong lately but, from the comments of those watching training, it looks like it is going to be very hard to pick our best midfield.

For that matter looks bloody hard to pick our best 22.

Can't complain at all with that set up, bar possibly 2E, only because i haven't seen enough of him

Not sure on his game sense just yet. Would like him to cement a spot on a flank before playing wing. He has all the tools to do it though

Gibbs is going to be an absolute jet this season, we really missed him in the Semi. I like the idea that someone suggested him as a high half forward entering the midfield role, that suits him perfectly.

In terms of a heavy load extraction midfielder we have a few options. Robinson took a huge leap last year, i think he has the goods to do that role. Curnow also was brilliant with his extraction before his shoulder injury, you would always see a handball darted out and it was Curnow in an under.

Ellard is another solid in an under player, really enjoyed watching him go about his business. And then there's McLean, didn't impress me at all when he did play. He's shown he has the ability to do this role (at Melbourne) but i think he gets way too exposed with his pace when opposing teams spread. If he works on his positioning or even somehow manages to increase his speed then i'd give him a run.

So I'd Robinson, but with one of Ellard, Curnow, McLean in the side as well.

I think we'll have multiple potential centres in the side. .. A combination of Judd, Curnow, McLean, Robbo, Ellard and Gibbs. .. With the bold ones as certain starting 22 and one of the other three likely. ..

If you mean a pure inside mid then Curnow/Ellard would have to be front runners at the moment with McLean a possibility. .. Obviously a Russell/Walker could be dark horses for the role, at times, too. ..

Well, I hope Paul Williams can extract Brock's potential and get him to puff out his chest again....

Should be an excellent mentor to him. Brock played his best football with Paul Williams as the midfield coach of Melbourne.

05-06 McLean was very, very good. 07-08 McLean was poor - hit his groin troubles. 09 McLean found some form. Look at which years Williams was there.

How was Williams to blame for the management of the Dogs and Demons?

Under Bailey, the Demons weren't interested in winning games, but player development by promoting young players and moving Bruce, McDonald and Mclean on. Using your argument, Mark Riley shouldn't have been appointed as Carlton's midfield coach. Riley and Williams worked together at the Demons.

Williams was Footscray's forward coach before moving to the midfield last year.

Think Boyd went alright last year.

Hird's resume isn't as good as Williams'.

Williams has impressed all at tha CFC to date.
I've personally enjoyed the way he goes about things and in particular his work with Gibbs.
We'll see.

Of course none of use can ever really know how good they are. Purely my own thoughts.
But it's like Knights' record. Not good. And his eventual results? Not good. Hmm. It mightn't mean anything, at best it's not a ringing endorsement.

I know it's kind of a glib cliche, but successful people breed success and Williams is, at this point, 0/2 - going into Carlton.

Anyhow, that's my point made as well as I can make it, good luck with Williams and rotten luck with everything else!
