the choices are:

1 . Michael Clarke
2 . Brad Hodge
3 . Darren Lehmann
4 . Martin Love
5 . Cameron White (Gilchrist to bat at 6)

no matter what happens between now and Sri Lanka it won't come from anyone other those five.

The answer to that would most likely be Clarke, I mean the selectors have seen him play spin well on the hardest pitches to play spin on in India and plus Clarke is a fairly handy bowler.

Yep, Clarke's footwork and approach to spin is far superior to some of his Australian teammates. If Martyn doesn't score runs in this series, then he must be really worried, since selectors would definitely have reservation about selecting him in Sri Lanka or India, Martyn doesn't play spin that well, and Murali might chop him up.

Clarke.

Time to get some young blood into the side.

Unfortunately, it's the bowling attack that really worries me at the moment. Just can't see where the next McGrath and Warne are coming from. The younger quicks like Bracken, Inness, Williams are working class types, but none look future champions. Warne is the greatest spinner ever, so it owuld be unfair to expect an equal replacement.

Lets all jump on the Clarke bandwagon

A guy who averages 36 in first class cricket against Boof who averages 56 in first class and 49 in test matches.

Ridiculous.

We have to be so careful not to expose Clarke too early and ruin his career as a result.

Why the need to be so defensive?

We both know there is more to it then just numbers.

I want Boof back as well, but you have to take into account age, fitness, fielding and bowling ability.

Clarke is the future of Australian cricket, the sooner he gets in the test side, the better.

Ummm, he was one of the leading Shield runscorcers last season, average in around 50, and had a brillant One Day season as well.

It's not your overall record, it's your current form.

We threw in the likes of Warne, Ponting, Langer, Martyn, Steve Waugh, and lots more in the deep end very early on in their careers, didn't do them much harm, did it? Clarke's one of the most promising young batsman in the world and with a very good head on his shoulders, he can sure handle the big time, besides, he adds freshness into an aging outfit.

It should be in this order:
1. Lehmann- deserves to walk back into that side
2. Love- Unluckt to be dropped for Katich. Has done nothing wrong.
3. Hodge- in form batsmen, probably would need Martyn to be injured.
4. Clarke- give him another year or two

Clarke will get it- NSW and one of the 'pretty boys' means he will probably take the spot.

Yes he averaged 47 last season in his best season by far. One season does not a player make.

His current form is pretty ordinary if you check his first class scores so far this year.

I am not saying he won't be good,I think he will, but I just don't think we should rush him adn give him any delusions of grandeur.

Defensive of what?

I was being derisory of bandwagoners if anything.

Clarke has got to deserve his spot. If we pick someone just because they are young why don't we put the whole Australian under 19 side in the test team.

Is everyone assuming Katich keeps his spot when Lehmann is fit? I have been but now that I think about it, Love made a century last time he played. Maybe Katich is only there until Lehmann is back, then he's on the outer again?

Boof will be extremely unlucky if he is overlooked. I think he would be best for the team as well.

Potential aside for a moment - I think Boof and Love must be given the opportunity before Clarke.

And I just dont think Clarke has met the standards that the current Aussie batsmen all met before making the side, nor the standards that others in line have set season after season.

I think Clarke will get it.

Personally I am divided over Boof and Clarke.

Some say that nothing will beat experience, but on the other hand some will say nothing beats useful exeburance.

But I am 99% sure of one thing - if Lehmann misses out on getting a spot for the first test in Sri Lanka (whether it be in place of S. Waugh or S. Katich - personally I think Katich will be in the team no matter what), it will be very close to the end of his test career. Not the end, but it will make it very very very difficult to get back in.

I voted in this poll to see how many clowns voted White. Seems there were a couple.

Anyway, i've always held the view that the test XI should be the best XI at any one time. I'm not so sure that Clarke should be in the side ahead of Lehmann just because he is younger if Boof is going to make more runs in Sri Lanka. Our domestic competition is competetive enough of of sufficient standard to brood players for test match standard, we dont really need to carry them in the test team to get up their confidence in the hope in 12 months they will have the monkey off their back.

Please provide evidence. The fact that he is young is not evidence.
He averages 65 with the bat and 24 with the ball in ODI Cricket.

I know that doesn't mean he will be an instant success in the longer form of the game, but it's a start.

Oh, and he's young. :)
