Our current captain is currently out injured and looks like this will be his last season. So that begs the question, who is our next captain? Two people that come to mind are Aaron Davey and Brent Moloney. What do you all think?

Re: Who's our next Captain

Moloney for me, but I don't know if it is Junior's last season cause his form is great and his body looks like its holding up okay, except for this minor injury.

Newton.

LOL but srs. Either Green or Moloney; Both bleed for the club and are good consistent players. Closest players we have to superstars in terms of consistency.

Re: Who's our next Captain

Moloney for sure. He bleeds red and blue and gives it his all week in and week out.

Other candidates include Green and Davey.

Re: Who's our next Captain

Based on the weekends performance if Jmac retires this year, we are in massive trouble. We really missed his leadership and a sound head to snap them out of it.

For mine its between Moloney and Green. I love Greeny, but Brent just loves the club so much, and with the camp etc i just see him as more of a leader both on and off the field.

If he was my captain i would be embarrassed to look him in the eye if i didn't take my turn to put my head over the ball.

Re: Who's our next Captain

If we want a short captain so in 3-4 years we can appoint Grimes, Trengove or Scully as captain then it has to be Green.

If we want a long term captain then Moloney is the man, so we need to consider that when we select a captain.

I hear what you're saying Crimson Azure, but for mine you pick the best man for the job at the time. No point in having a 'caretaker' captain for a few years for when and IF some of the young guys stand up.

*guys who may not even be at the club anymore.

Re: Who's our next Captain

I'm going to buck the trend and go with Grimes. Fabulous player, plays his guts out every round (Was one of the few on Sunday) and has a good decade left with the club. Looks to be a calm head in defence and you build every team from the back up.

Neither of the two I mentioned would be caretaker captains, both deserve it. But do we want Moloney to be captain for 5-6 years then hand over to someone else - which still could be JT, TS or JG, or do we want to have Green who would do a top job leading the club for the next 3 years until these players are 22-23 then allow them to spend the next 7-10 years leading the club.

I'll take either of the two or even Davey is he can learn how to manage a heavy tag.

Re: Who's our next Captain

Beamer for mine, reckon he would be inspirational behind the scenes and could elevate to another level, both off and on field, if given the opportunity/challenge/reward of captaincy. Even if Junior stays on another year, it wouldn't be a bad thing to have him around for a year as a non-captain, could ease the transition for the new captain.

FWIW, I'd also be happy with Davey or Green.

Is Moloney the right fit for a captain? I love him as a player and i think he has been great this year and last but is he cpatain material. He is a leader but, at times he is a hot head. He, however, bleeds red and blue. Davey is our best player and is not a hot head at all. I would be equally as happy who ever became captain.

Just putting it out there. Thoughts?

I think Moloney has matured in terms of being a hot head. A couple of years ago I might have agreed with you, but I think now he is either being groomed (or grooming himself!) for the captaincy.

But I think that the 'hot-head' in him is a good quality to have in some situations. You know he'll do anything for his team and he wouldnt ask anything of them that he wouldn't do himself. (I get the same vibe from Jmac)

I would defs agree with you on Moloney. He has got his shit togeather and playing some really good footy. Lets hope Collin Sylivia can do the same, on the right track though. Jamar is on the right track but all up he has really only played one good year of footy. Second half of last year and this season.

Junior if he plays next year is the obvious choice to keep the captaincy

Grimes will be the next long term captain of Melbourne
