sorry if this has been covered before...but Queens Birthday is in June. Why play next Monday?

The main reason(s) for this Monday Night game is;

The AFL is testing out new timeslots for its 18 team competition, or 9 weekly game fixture, that will be introduced in 2012.

The TV stations I dare say dont mind the Monday Night slot also.

The question I ask is;

Why are we playing StKilda at Docklands for our home game?

Why not play Geelong at Skilled Stadium, Carlton at Visy Park etc etc.

Seems stupid to me, the whole fixturing of this game.

the afl is forcing Monday night football on the people in an attempt to make it absolutely common practice once the new club arrives and down the track two new teams arrive.

by involving collingwood it makes it both a ratings winner and a hit with the fans who go to the game. the afl know that collingwood fans will turn up regardless of the time of the game on a "school night" (parent coming out in me)

anyway, at the end of the day the reason is money and flooding tv's of australians with footy from friday to monday instead of friday to sunday (barring public holiday times eg: anzac day)

collingwood fans are never NOT going to turn up, so that afl are simply cashing in on that.

the NRL have monday night NRL and have had it for a couple of seasons, you'd have to ask NRL purists but i have heard that it hasnt worked with them, i hope it doesnt work with AFL but if collingwood are involved, it will probably win....for the AFL.

It is also to avoid playing on Mother's Day which traditionally is a day that draws poor crowds.

You'll note that there is no game in Victoria on Mother's Day this year.

Actually i believe the true unofficial line is when more teams are into the AFL then Monday night games will happen .The AFL are testing the waters re attendences and TV numbers.
The AFL are going to go head to head against rugby .

Now given that Collingwood have the largest following in Australia and the Saints are undefeated Monday nights game will NOT be a true indication of the NORMAL crowd that would attend Monday night games.

So at least an additional 40000 people have to watch it at home in Melbourne. Then the AFL will go to the TV networks and say hey look at this amazing new timeslot that has constantly worked, now give us $1 Billion

In 10 years time I can see this being one of those perennial "how come Collingwood get all the........blah, blah, blah." issues.

I just hope everyone remembers who started it, the AFL not Collingwood, and why.

Maybe it has something to do with Visy Park not being used to play AFL games anymore.

Just saying.

We did it round 1 a few years ago, Daisy on debut. Wasnt a success then, wont be now.

Daisy's debut? .... I went to that game but didn't remember it was his 1st game. FWIW I thought Monday nights footy sux BIG time! Just didn't feel right and man was it a pain getting home in the traffic.

I can see the need to test the waters because it'll be regular whether we like it or not once the league expands. TV viewing brings in each cash there's no doubt about it. But when it does get implemented and Collingwood plays I will be VERY PISSED OFF INDEED!!! ...... AND IF IT'S OUR HOME GAME I'LL BE FRIGGIN' FURIOUS!!! :mad::mad::thumbsd:

Mark it down for Collingwood to play GC17 and especially the West Sydney knob licks for away games on Monday nights for sure to nudge into the NRL Monday night market. :mad:

The answer obviously comes down to money.

Great for the TV networks as it will rate it's arse off, but for the footy followers it is crap - and ultimately I can see plenty of difficulties if the AFL persist, mainly with it's fixturing.

The worst part for us, is the short turnaround before we play Carlton next Sundee arvo after they've had two extra days to prepare.

Yep the Monday night timeslot is surely to get the bigger pay-off from the networks because if you were looking at it with a completely football-oriented view then the best time-slot for the additional game would be to have an extra game on Friday night - one on FTA and one on Foxtel like they do on Saturday nights.

The Monday night game here can probably be put down to a couple of reasons as others have already mentioned ie: staying away from Mother's Day and getting people used to the concept again prior to the extra teams coming into the comp.

But IMHO putting Collingwood in these Monday night games may provide the AFL with a false dawn when it comes to the ongoing success of the concept as no matter what we always pull a decent crowd and there will be a strong TV audience.

This could mean that in the future we may become the Monday night experts (ala Kangaroos in the 80s) to get the concept going :(

Let's see how much interest there is in Monday night footy when a couple of poorly drawing teams play.

The other and probably more confusing aspect about this game is that it is our home game? Go figure.
