Good post though. The next time a timekeeper presses the siren and a ball is marked/score recorded before the umpire hears the siren (and it will happen) I'll be as interested as you to see what happens.

Same as always because it's a different issue :)

It's a good point and a lot of our supporters would agree with you.

I'm not sure the decision to not challenge was made just to please the "corporates" though. Aside from the obvious financial costs involved, a lengthy court case would surely have had an adverse affect on the focus of our players. By accepting the decision of the AFL Commission we can at least move forward. And sure, our board knew the reputation of the club would have suffered had we taken the matter to court. In turn that it would have affected our sponsors. However I think the right decision was made. In the eyes of most people the only thing that matters is that Fremantle were in front when the siren sounded. It's all very well to blame us for now opening the can of worms but if we had of challenged we'd have 95% of the football world shaking their heads and disapproving of the action we took. And I wouldn't imagine our 2007 fixture would be too helpful to the club ;)

understand the moral grounds about this desicion, but there are rules and they should be followed.
prime example, Grant Thomas has now suggested there were 14 clear umpiring errors made, i.e. didnt go by the rule book.
The tassie game, well, rule states, game is over when umpire "hears" siren, so umpire didnt hear it, so game progresses until he does. Not umpires fault, not saints fault, timekeeper made the error, that eaquates to the same as any one of the 14 umpring errors. AFL is a big business, if they who run it have got their heads in the sand and dont cross the ts and dot the i's in presenting a game, with all officials, knowing their duty, then its their fault, not the umps, not the saints.
Freo would have launched court challenge, would have indirectly meant, Saints were not put in the position of having to appeal, hence financial burden.
This is why the game of golf is without reproach when it comes to "controversy", morally there are many "unfairs", but the rule book is never questioned. There are players that have blown hundreds of thousands, just because they didnt sign the card properly.

Very amateurish approach from the AFL, not fathoming implications for the future. In other words, they got away with murder on this one. ;)

Just a reminder of some of the trash that we Saints supporters have copped from Freo in recent matches - this one in particular; "the Sirengate incident", irked me more than the "Whispers in the Sky incident" where the umpires manufactured a win against St Kilda seemingly due to a grudge held against Grant Thomas.
