Re: Enough!!!!

FFS I'm sick of reading all these BS threads about how crap we are or why we aren't as good blah blah blah.

The simple reason why Essendon did well today: Their experienced included
  • Lloyd
  • McVeigh
  • Rama
  • McPhee
  • Hill
  • Fletcher
  • Micahael
  • Johnson
  • Lucas ( injured)
Not including Lucas these guys add up to around 1400 games experience

Essendon's average games today was 94.6
Richmonds was 90.1
And Carltons was 64.4

I don't excuse the performance by our players IMO their lack of grunt in the 2nd half was disgraceful, but with a group of inexperienced players there is going to be inconsistency.

Today Essendon was terrific, but lets see how their younger guys stand up when they don't have Lloyd firing, McVeigh with 32 touches and Michael, McPhee and Fletcher dominating across 1/2 back and FB

Just sounds like another bunch of reasons why we are crap.

Re: Enough!!!!

How so? I wonder do you type when your mind is doing something else.

Because I might disagree with you? Settle down. People here are getting heartily sick and tired of the youth explanation. You don't need experience to go as hard as you can. You don't need experience to give everything for the guernsey. You don't need experience to feel a bit of embarrassment at a second half fadeout that was pure shit.

Yes Essendon have a core of longterm players - I said as much somewhere else today. But there are plenty of first and second year players in other clubs who manage to play to their full potential relative to their playing time. As long as our "kids" are willing to put up with Thursdays woeful second half performance, they will be known as "crap" and rightfully so.

You guys will be fine with the youth coming through the middle.

TBH you really need one KPP its where your really breaking down. Either Waite plays forward and your exposed down he plays down back there is no link forward. KPP really needs to be your focus in the next draft or trade period until then I think you should play Cloke/Ackland at CHF to plug the hole.

I cant wait for Round 3 though you guys always seem to lift for us. Good luck against the Saints.

Cheers. Bit of a morgue in here today. Sounds like all the speed wasn't just at Stawell today. Hope we can keep up with your young mob in a couple of weeks.

1. Already mentioned that their grunt, going hard whatever you want to call it was pathetic.

2. Yes other clubs have young guys who play to their potential, but they don't do this week in week out. It isn't as noticeable in their sides because they have senior players who usually pick up the slack when the younger guys aren't playing so well.

The first 1/2 on Thursday we had players like Stevens, Judd, Fev, Houlihan, Thornton, Waite all dominating. What resulted, we had Bower, Jamison, Eddie etc all running the lines taking on players kicking direct.

The Second 1/2 not only were our senior guys were quiet, we began seeing these younger players who were so full of confidence and run go into their shells and kick backwards making stupid decisions.

Richmond played well but we mentally lost the game. We will do better next time, honestly can't understand why everyone is acting like we've just been hammered by 100 points

In the coming weeks we will see

Stevens and Judd sustain their form for longer than 2 quarters
Fisher back into the side
Fev firing
Hampson and maybe Kreuzer providing a more competitive ruck attack if Cloke is struggling
Setanta being able to play in the backline / forward (hopefully backline) as he wont be needed in the ruck.

So after all the positive buzz in the off season, all the hype, all the excitement and anticipation leading up to March 20, we give away a 4 goal lead, capitulate to the wooden spooners and you expect people to just accept it?

No doubt it was disappointing, but there were positives the first 1/2 that were awesome bar the final 10 minutes of it. We were smashed in the Ruck and still managed to dominate all around the ground.

People questioned our fitness etc, but often last year it was our 1st half that were seeing us 8 goals down for us to claw back and lose by a few in the end. At the end of the day when we have those brain freeze moments and everything spirals it's going to happen with a young side. Honestly apart from very much underdone Judd, Stevens and Hadley what have we gained from last year?

If this week we showed no heart and play like we did in the 2nd half on Thursday by all means go to town...

EDIT: just like to add, this time last year, Essendon were top 4 contenders, North were Wooden Spoon favourites, Geelong were outclassed by the Bulldogs, and we had beaten a Richmond side which the previous year finished around 10th? Only to be pantsed by Geelong the next week.

Right on the money.

I really hope this gives them the incentive to lift their intensity this week against the Saints. Last year in the middle of our losing streak we managed to get within 10 points of them, with arguably a worse side. That gives me a little bit of hope, if nothing else does. If we get that intensity back, and play with more passion - the improvement will come. But it must start with the core basics - communication, confidence and commitment to the ball. I call it the "Three Cs", and they were all lacking on Thursday night. Only when they are present, we can really take a step up and improve skills, awareness and timing.

Houli is an absolute gun.

Houli's talent was never brought into question.....not only was he a ball magnet in the under 18's he used the ball beautifully.....was widely considered a top 15 prospect on talent alone.....his issue was getting his body right, which he couldn't seem to do at TAC level, let alone the rigors of AFL footy. However he seems to have gotten this right for now so good luck to him.

Not only were their positives in the 1st half, but we also had the opportunity to get our lead back out to 4 goals in the 3rd quarter, with both Judd & Edwards missing shots on goal. If these goals had been kicked, it may well have killed off any momentum Richmond had & in fact, given us the momentum to go on & win comfortably.

You are spot on in what you say about this time last year & we can certainly draw comparisons to previous years as well. You only have to go back as far as 2004 & remember how all hell was breaking loose down at 'Sleepy Hollow' after losing their first 3 games of the season & 4 of the first 5 games (including a 9 goal hiding by us), coming off a 12th place finish in 2003. If I remember rightly there were calls for Frank Costa to be removed, 'Bomber Thompson' was under the pump & the ability of the playing group was questioned. Eventually they turned it around, with several of the younger players growing in confidence, & made a PF. Of course we won't make a PF this year, but what has happened in Round 1 does not necessarily consign us to another totally miserable year. Does any one not think that a fully fit Judd, Stevens, Fev, Hadley, Fisher etc won't win us games this year?

Great to see the footy back isn't it? Pies beat the ever disappointing Freo and all of a sudden we are premiership material. Blues play a terrible half of footy and are doomed again.

It's round 1. You are a club in rebuild mode. Your best players are either underdone or too young at the moment. You are playing catch up for a few years of draft penalties combined with short sighted, poor decision making in recruting.

I think someone else identified the key issue for you and that is that you are expecting your kids to lead a revival when they just aren't capable yet. Collingwood's kids are playing fantastic footy, but they have been able for a couple of years to play a support role to people like Buckley, Clement, Rocca etc. This has accelerated their development. They can learn to play good footy without the expectation that they will lead the charge. Carlton hasn't had this luxury and suffers because of it.

If I was a blues supporter I'd be thinking Judd, Stevens, Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Kreuzer and Hampson. That'd keep me feeling positive!

I think they certainly will win us games however we have to be patient (very hard after our last 5 years). The football public in general thought we were going to come out all guns blazing; Judd and Stevens to run riot, Fev kicking 6+ with the delivery into the fwd line and Murphy and Gibbs to blossom with the tagging pressure being shifted to Judd and Stevens.

It was never going to happen. Judd and Stevens are about 60% fit, they hardly played at all together the other night, just rotated so we had a midfielder leader on at all times. While our skills were pretty ordinary they will improve as will our fitness though we wont see the benefit of guys like Judd, Stevens, Hadley, Hampson for at least another 6 weeks. It will improve every week but wait until they really fire and we will start knocking off teams.

The second half of this year will be very exciting (barring major injury).

You are spot on. There is much to look forward to as the season goes on. You would almost guarantee that the next time we play Richmond the result will be well & truly reversed, perhaps with interest & there will be some surprise results in our favour. I certainly don't believe supporters should be making a noose out of the bedsheets yet.

They can run and we can't. They can kick and we can't. They are hard at it and we aren't.

Pretty simple really.

They have Mal M, Dustin F and Paddy Rider and we have nothing. Our defensive is a disgrace and until that is fixed we are stuffed. We have to start flooding or playing with atleast one extra man back.

Personally I think if we had a more defensive set up we could win 8 games +

Spot on. :thumbsu:

Even though i love round 1 coz it means footy's back, but i hate all the talk after round 1. If you lose you're a terrible team and the seasons a waste, and if you win you're gonna have a great year, win a falg etc. Its bloody ridiculous how people carry on about 1 game. Next week we'll beat the saints and the bombers will get beaten by 100 points. Then can you imagine all the back flips.
Clam down people. Its only round 1. 21 rounds to go.
I cant remember a season where the ladder after round 1 looked the same as the ladder after round 22.

Yeh ... where pacing ourselves!:D

Not saying that, i'm just saying don't jump off the blues bandwagon and onto the bombers just yet.
I'm pretty sure we won our first game last year. Not too sure but how many more did we win for the rest of the year?:(

Just the right amount. Shhh...........don't tell Libba.

We will belt your rabble by over 10 goals. All the pre season hype has dissapated within a week this year it seems. Essendon have had numerous picks over the past few years which the recruiters have used effectively. The 06 draft was simply sublime. Whereas Carlton continue to pick average players. Also there is a terrible culture at Carlton which has spawned after years of pathetic displays. No wonder it seems the players dont play with any heart. PP looms.
