If Essendon learnt to kick straighter they really lost it themselves they could been 10 goals at least by quarter time

proves how good the blues will be this year last week

man we deserved it but carlton had too much heart, why cant we allow the 48 points difference to stay around in that zone???? BUT we let it drift... dissapointing, we were too relaxed after that lead, damn better luck for us next week

Don't know about needing better luck next week - certainly more consistency from the forwards (and umpires - even though the free kick tally was in our favour) will help. And not getting spooked when the momentum gets away from us

We didnt want it. We went to sleep in the second half, they're slicker in their delivery and disposal of the ball, and they exposed some of our passengers after half time, i.e. Michael, Laycock and MJ. They thouroughly deserved their win and I sincerely hope this doesnt begin our rot of previous years again.

probably the most dissapointing match ive seen the bombers play for quite some time, more so then last year. losing a 48 point lead to a team who is i would say not going to make it past 12th this year. the gameplan seemed to go completley out the window in the 3rd quarter. and was a bit dissapointed in a few players.

ricky dyson, although spent a lot of the time on the bench still didnt impress me much today.
leroy jetta, didnt do anything really for the game and missed a vital easy set shot. (i musnt be too critical to the 3rd gamer though)
scott lucas (even having 11 marks and 3 goals didnt satisfy me today, also missed 5 shots that he would normally have penciled down straight away)
probably most mal micheal - is still relatively young 29 isnt old. i think he needs to adapt his game a bit, his a great full back but loses it on the lead. either the bombers need to continually help him out when his on players on fevola's quality or a new plan for him needs to be made..

also thought kevin sheedy was a bit stupid today. from my perspective i think he thought we were definately going to win late in that second quarter. he had fletcher, winderlick and lucas i think on the bench at once, then when he put them back on he put fletcher in the forward line, (obviously to give paddy ryder some time alone to develop his defensive game). i just think he should have stuck with the game plan at least until midway through the 3rd quarter....

the next two games are really going to show where we are at. st kilda, a team you would put in the 8, and collingwood a team who i would put at about 8th or just below the 8. i figure if we beat the two of them we are a finals team.

They have us between the ears. We simply turn to $h!t - everything about us, when we play them in these big games.

We go from midfield poise in hiting targets, to kicking at goal with confidence and class...to utter rubbish. Next week we will go back to like last week, you watch. Whitnall wont get a kick, Lucas wont miss. Playing Carlton is like playing games in a vaccum whereby reality is warped.

I actually plonked $200 on Carlton @ $3 this morning. Why? Just an absolute uneasyness all morning, nearly nauseating. Just didnt feel right - and I am a stupid fan - I can only imagine what sort of psychological effect they are having on the club itself. It got to the point this morning where I had nearly zero confidence in our ability to beat Carlton.

I won $400 - big deal, this is the worst I can remember feeling since 99...with perhaps the 01 GF the exception.

The mind is a very strong thing, and they seem to have us on toast there.

I feel sick.

Hopefully we can bounce back from this and get another win in the next few weeks otherwise the rot could set in as it did last year and the team will be going nowhere.

Exactly what i was thinking. Sheeds needs to have a nice little talk to the boys and get their heads right quick!!

Otherwise the losses by less than a kick will start to rack up again:(

It's all about learning. Young sides are prone to give up big leads although it shouldn't happen. Todays loss might stop a similar thing happening later on say in a final this year or next. It will also make next weeks win sweeter.

Lets stay positive. It sounds like if we had of kicked straight we would have won. It also sounds like Carlton were pretty good too.

Agreed when you said we'll have a lucas who will kick straighter than he did today and whitnall back to sht form, i had that feeling about calrton too (winning), pissed off with the come back but carlton wanted it bad so thats a positive for them.

Also this loss will teach us something about maintaining the lead and thats to not drop off even if your 100points ahead half time, anything can happen like a favola who kicks 8 goals lol.

Was a great game and as a Carlton supporter I can say WOW... but still if we lost by 3 after that game I'd be disappointed too.

We could argue and say Essendon should of won after being in front by 48 but then the other side would say, any team that comes back after 48 down, obtains a 13 point lead and then wins by 3 deserves it too.

Still I doubt any of us would have wanted a draw!!!

I'll say this, Carlton should NEVER have let you get to 48 in front so quickly... but Essendon SHOULD have buried us after that lead or at least maintained it...

funny game footy!

Swings and roundabouts guys. I remember in the 80s losing about a dozen games in a row to the Bombers. This run started in our premiership years of 81 and 82. They just seemed to have our measure mentally every time.

99 prelim, round 3 2001 when we had our big guns out, stealing a draw last year and this comeback .... some sort of payback for the 80s and the 93 GF I guess. We will take it where we can get it.

Yep, for sure.

Remember in 01, we had it all over North, had beaten them 6 times in a row and found ourselves down nearly 12 goals. We bounced back and beat em.

What happened after that? Well, we havnt beaten them since.

That game was more about Ess v Carl, than Essendon and Carltons standing in relation to everyone else. Form shouldnt be used going into this matchup, nor taken from the matchup.

You have us between the ears right now...hopefully like North it now ends!

i sat their at the game and was never confident. i just had that bad feeling the whole game. at half time after they had kicked the last 3 goals i said to my mate, "i have a very bad feeling"

At half time, I believed we would win it. I didn't have the courage to come on BF and announce it though. :D
