In after uninformed Petterd haters.

Remember we were rubbish in the middle all year, midfield depth was the issue...so even though Dimma looked into his crystal ball and knew that Conca would go down in the first quarter he decided to play favourites with our loose backman/swingman in preference to another midfielder....staggering!

I thought it was strange we decided not to play Arnott and Foley. We went in with the 3 ruckman Maric, Vickery and Griggs in preference to more midfield depth. Seriously what was Dimma thinking!

OP Foley was injured, out of form and unfortunately missed out on a deep midfield that had been dominating all year. In the lead up there was plenty of talk about our forward line, our ruckman and our backs needing to fire.....our midfield was not even a question. Nobody was to know. At the end of the day it was the fact that we spent our petrol tickets early in the hype and nervousness of a final and couldn't match carltons run late in the game. That's it.

Anyway you look at it we played 1 midfielder short and as a result of the Conca injury it hurt us more than it otherwise would have.

Petterd was selected over a midfielder so that is why it was Foley for Petterd. The fact half our team shat their pants in the final was not Petterd's fault but I still would not have played him.

I think the fact we kept Foley in the off-season will result in a big (hopefully injury free) season from Foley. He was finding his best form back in 2012 before his injury and now I expect with a big preseason under his belt he will return to the midfield gun he was in 2008.

The fact is that we played brilliant football for 65% of the game and got to i think 35 points up at 1 stage and it was all looking rosy and foley not being picked or Conca going down in the 1st minutes made no difference.

Nek minute - Wow we shat outselfs and choked
Nothing to do with Conca,Foley,Petterd

Foley can't kick further than 30m, has lost his burst of speed and endurance. I hope he regains his form and fully recovers his confidence in his body because we need a strong Foley to round out our inside mids. If not we will see his name more frequently as a sub or not named at all.

A fair bit of an exaggeration there with 30mtrs, He can kick it 40-45 easily and he really hasnt lost that much pace to be perfectly honest and just takes time to run freely as he once did but that will come back with renewed confidence after a good pre season without injury

I wish I was exaggerating THE_GUN. I've been watching replays of Foley this year and I haven't seen Foley kick longer than 30m. I watched many of his disposals by foot be ineffective too. Ellis, Vlaustin and Conca have all gone past him based on 2013 form. I hope he has a better 2014 with a injury free preseason behind him.

It isn't that he cant kick the distance, its the fact is the accuracy is junk.

Our game fell apart in contested ball, smashed utterly in the middle and the D50. We were ranked 4th for least scores against from a clearance loss but we conceded 72 points to Carlton in the EF. In the D50 we were -18 in CPs, only 1 team recorded a worse result during the ENTIRE season; Melbourne. We were ranked first for that in the year. We lost that statistic only 5 times but twice against Carlton.

For me with Foley you have to weigh up how much he brings in regards to our clearance work and then his ball use which lets us down. He averaged 2.5 clearances, it wasn't worth it. With a full pre-season he may become better but I would prefer to see Arnot take over as the inside midfielder.

This is a good point. In ALL the games we lose, it happens because we cant get our hands on the footy. Simple as that. Which is why we still need to get better at CB and more players that its natural for them ie Vlastuin.

This is where you are wrong. We were getting smashed in the middle after half time. The burden was soley on Cotchin and with Conca going down early the re-inforcements weren't there. Cotchin played an absolute blinder but needed help on the inside. Foley should have played.

with foleys form and injuries, the risk was to high.tuck at worst gave us a strong combative midfield warrior so i could see the logic.pettard could play tall or small back or forward,so his versatility got him a game.no one could predict conca going down so early.and yes s.edwards was rubbish all game but his form all year warranted a game.hindsight he should of played but thats alot of hindsight.

Very valid points re Foley and Petterd, but I do think losing Conca early hurt our rotations late in the game and our ability to have another quality midfielder running the game out.

Watching the game i truly believe we just panicked after a couple in a row was kicked against us and went into our shell's
We had the man power there and were capable of closing the game but lacked experience and composure

I really dont believe that losing Conca early was the reason we folded, Our experienced guys just couldnt marshall the youngsters and the youngsters just didnt have the nous to lock it up

I think losing was crucial, but not for the running out the game park, but like you I reckon he would've had the composure to win the ball and help steady the ship.

I could get used to all the threads about why player X can't get into the team/should have played.

A real sign of progress when we have a few players that many feel were stiff to miss out on a spot in the 22 :thumbsu:
