Why do we choose such horrible captains?

We haven't won a game all year and our best young leader of the last five years comes back and plays a BOG game that includes two clutch goals in the last quarter. A captain's game if you like and people are putting him in their leadership groups as an afterthought.

A week is a long time in football fans and goldfish memories.

This dual captaincy is rubbish. And the fact it’s player driven is rubbish.

Sort it out Clarko - this is why you’re on the big bucks.

The dual captaincy was football department driven.

McDonald won the player vote by 1 vote for the Captaincy change after Ziebell.

If it was player driven, he would have been awarded the sole captaincy.

I believe the coaching department put the proposition of dual captains to the playing group after the vote results to save face as the club had been grooming Simpkin for a few years.

Because it ends up being a popularity contest. It’s like entrusting a bunch of schoolkids to vote for school captain. You think they’ll vote for their mates/person they like or the nerdy guy that’ll actually be adequate at the job?

Now, now, before you start saying they’re adults and not schoolkids, thus will much smarter and calculated with their votes. Just remember these are ‘footballers’ we’re talking about.
It might be a touch arrogant to think that you know more than a team of professional footballers what it takes to lead a team of professional footballers. What are their individual needs and what do they each look for in a leader? Would you know?

At which point did I say that I know more about football than anyone?

What I am saying though, is ‘there ARE’ better individuals at clubs, that are a hell of a lot more knowledgeable, smarter, strategic, and most of all understand people and group/leadership dynamics more than you, me or the average football player.

Here’s a question. Given a choice do you think most young males would prefer to live ‘comfortably’ with a fun parent that let’s you do whatever you want all day (whether good/bad) eat, sleep in, go out whenever you want, picks up your clothes after you, bails you out whenever you face any of life challenges etc.?

Or would they choose a strict parent that focuses on discipline, makes you clean up, gives you rules, sets a high standard, pushes you to be better, gives it to you straight, makes you do chores, holds you accountable for your actions?

Ask the majority of young males, of course they’ll want the fun parent.
It’s a fact of life, people don’t always know or choose what’s best for them.
Just like you can’t ask a 5-year old what they ‘want’ to eat for dinner or who they ‘want’ to be president (unless you have a death wish). It’s illogical and completely moronic to ask a group of footballers to decide who they ‘want’.
Especially when there are more equipped individuals in the next group of management available (head coaches, assistants etc.) that have been in a position of leadership, have the experience managing people, have the life experience, know what skills the role actually entails and more likely to select the guy that will do a better job.

Don’t forget, most of the players are young (especially at North), and don’t have much life experience nor experience managing others & for many of them this more than likely their first and only job they’ve had in their life so far. Can’t expect them to make a better decision compared to the guys that have been there and done that.

I'd prefer Larkey as captain, with Sheezel as vice. I fear that we've gone too far down the Simpkin/McDonald rabbithole that it might be too late to demote them without causing issues.

Can live with Simpkin, but McDonald should be nowhere near the captaincy. It’s insane that without the intervention from management, McDonald would’ve been the sole captain of North.
I get that he’s funny, the Chad of the group and one of the boys. But just highlights what a horrible system the player voting is.

Not sure who the better option would have been the last five years but ok
Parker would have been a better option this year IMO (a la the appointment of the great Barry Davis in 1973 his first North year).

Are you joking?

Andrew Swallow?

He was a brilliant captain.

Articulate, lead by example, loved by teammates, supportive.......if not for a few Razor Ray calls, may have been a premiership captain.

Re check your statement.

Haha people have such short memories. Ziebell and Swallow suddenly great captains now?
When Swallow was captain, people couldn't wait for him to move it on to the next person - as to what they though of him and how uninspiring he was. Likewise and worse for Ziebell, who was the biggest whipping boy on here, buddy-buddy, clumsy as hell, and frequently killed his team's momentum by giving away dumb free kick after dumb free kick.

Next thing you know, in a few years people will forget and start praising how good LMac and Simpkin were such great leaders. What a cracker lol

So who will it be next year? Larkey’s my bet, I reckon they (rightly) won’t want to overburden Harry at this stage of his career. Does Jy stay in the leadership group?

Exactly what I’ve said here previously. In the barren wasteland of leadership at North Parker was the best option. Still is IMHO.

Jy wont be in the leadership group. Makes no sense. Trust me its not going to happen. There will be perceived tension between Jy and club even if they do not admit it.

We choose such horrible captains because...
1.
Because we develop horrible captains
2. We value mateship without leadership and accountability.

The coaching panel then decide to go with the players vote without doing any evaluation themselves on who they think the best captain will be for the club.

All about to change if Viney's interview is anything to go by. Long overdue and a welcome change.
