I think strains are partial tears.
Grade 1 strain = mild tear
Grade 2 strain = serious, but incomplete tear
Grade 3 strain = complete tear
I think people are confusing full and partial tears
That's what I got from this site anyway:
http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/understanding
Most of the time when people talk about tears, I think they are talking about Grade 3 strains.

He dropped a catch from memory, his instinct was to chase balls that went past him, he dove for a catch in front of him. Any number of these movements could have results in a full blown hamstring tear, because it can require a sudden explosive movement. So I'll just go ahead and say that you're wrong on the slips fielding front.
Well no. Going forward to take a catch involves muscles of the lower leg, and not the hamstrings, and thus doesn't impact the damaged fibres. Dropped catch has no relevance to the injury, that's just Clarke having a dozy. And Clarke is in Test match mode, who wouldn't go chasing balls when you're that competitive a guy? That's no-one's fault. As you said, it's INSTINCT. And you can't blame the physio for that. As I said before, the time frame allowed a good inspection of how much Clarke could take.

It is an accumulative, basically gets a golden boy ride into the test team and fair do's makes a ton on debut and the rest could be history.

But to average 52.33 in test he must be doing something right? You have to say he is in special form this year!

I'm not arguing that he doesn't have a place in the side.

Anyway I'm out for a month, look forward to reviving this thread in late January.

the only thing that's annoying me about clarke at the moment is his never ending optimism in the press
- ponting to get a triple hundred (what the **** was that comment all about....?? we're not backing him in for a score, we're backing him in for a 300... ok...)
- backing haddin
- then backing wade
- we'll definately see more of wade bowling

in isolation all of those comments are a bit of who cares (although the ponting 300 comment was stupid), and you definately want the captain to be more on the positive side than the negative, but it's becoming a little bit hard to know whether he geniuely believes these things or just saying them for the sake of it...

but obviously his performances and leadership in the last twelve months have been phenomenal. probably the best individual calendar year i can remember.

so basically you're saying his rolling out cliches.

as for the last sentence, cannot fault that.

All the "hate" for Clarke is to balance out the ott gagging by Kerry O'Keefe. One example, I remember on the last morning, when he took the catch in slip off jayawardene. Paraphrasing "Clarke's becoming the best slip in cricket...He's not quite the reputation of Chappell, but he's getting there.' Only for an sms later on to remind him about Smith. It's little things like that that contribute, it was just one regular catch in slip, big deal.

Yeah, one mans opinion really matters. If it is little things like that contributing the hate, something is quite wrong with people. I can understand some other things people not liking about him, but this is just petty and stupid.

That was just one example. KOK goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on...

It's mainly not having the gumption to bat higher up. His "fans", who make lame excuses for not doing so, also don't help.

I am a supporter of Clarke and always have been, but his average doesn't tell the whole story. He has been getting massive scores, but his average "decent - good" contributions per innings average is actually pretty low. In 145 innings, he has only made 45 scores of 50+. That's an average of 3.22. Compare that with the following top batsmen of this recent era:

Kallis - 2.68
Ponting - 2.78.
Hussey - 2.79
Lara - 2.82.
Tendulkar - 2.83.
Daylight
Clarke - 3.22

As you can see, the top batsmen manage to contribute a lot more frequently than Clarke, despite Clarke averaging more than some of those guys. I think this is an average that should be given more prestige. I don't think it actually exists as an average in and of itself, so I had to wing it and therefore could not take into account any not outs, but there is a clear disparity between the best and Clarke in this area and it is something that I have noticed just by following his career. His big scores are usually dotted around a lot of failures.

Having said that, Clarke can quickly bring this average down, and he really deserves to be mentioned in the same breathe as the guys on this list.

But to be fair he is pretty far behind all those cricketers (50/50 on Huss) and I doubt he will ever reach the heights of a Lara or Ponting. But he still has been a great player for us and some people still won't recognize that.

Also after all of Ill Chicken's medical advice Clarke is fit to play, but I'm sure it is somehow selfish for him to play..

But nobody takes them seriously anyway.

The only spot i would move him to is 4. He isnt needed at 3. Have faith in the top order. If he went to 4, Hussey to 5 Watson at 6. But i dont really want Watson at 6 either. Watson needs to open.

My hate stems from the fact he played the first test against nz a few years with a back problem. He put himself before the team. There were other players ready to go but soupbones couldn't let anyone else get a sniff. He played woful in that match couldn't even bend down to field a ball. Yet now as captain he is overseeing this bizzare rotation policy which as cost a young fellah the chance to play a boxing day test.
He's selfish a mass promoter as shown by his unscripted appearance on the cricket show yesterday. His smugness also when he dropped that catch of Lyon in the last test made me hate him more.

Jesus, Hell must be a lukewarm place, when I'm mainly agreeing with Team DJ. Not sure why Clarke isn't need at 3? As long as he's in the top 4, along with Hussey as well (where in the 4 doesn't matter)

Some more gagging over Clarke (about a 1/2 hour or so) KOK "He's always been tough..He's been tough since he was 10" Not tough enough to go up the order though.
I didn't realise a yearly average of over 100 was a lame excuse.
Just noticed this **** post, not acknowledging what the post actually meant.

Another test, another ton. Can't wait till Ill Chicken comes back so I can hear what was wrong with this innings.
