The Richmond game is the best example of why we need Voss to play next season. The lack of leadership and direction on the park in the first half was mind blowing. Surely someone out there could have realised that kicking the ball long to a three on one contest wasn't working. He might be a lot slower and his opponents may be able to run off him but we are a much better side when the great man is out here. If the body can stand one more season I would love to see him pull on the jumper, even if that meant playing a reduced number of games.

I for one wouldnt be strongly opposed to the idea.

It's a different situation to the Mal Micheal one, as Vossy definitely has physical limitations on what his body will allow him to do. Hird rests when he needs too, as does Buckley.

The only downside is paying a player close to a million a year to only play maybe 12 games. The big picture might mean that losing Vossy ultimately might be best in the long run, though there is going to be some short term pain. :(

Good chance we'll have to pay him whether he plays or not, so it's not really a money issue.

It must be really hard knowing you can't perform at the level you want to, and have in the past, so I wouldn't begrudge him if he hangs up the boots after round 22.

Yep. Good post. Me either. I rate Michael Voss one of the top 5 sportsmen I have ever seen play in his or her given sport in my life. I aint looking forward to the day I stand there and give out the standing ovation. An old nearly 50 year od fart like me just may shed a tear or two. How embarrasing.
Ultimately Micheal deserves his money. If it causes short term pain so what! When the going got tough Vossy got going. Under him we won 3 flags and nearly fourth. He could kick of both feet and he could hand ball in any direction required. In fact he hand balled further than some blokes can kick!. He reads the play superbly and is always in the correct position.
I have spoken to him once or twice outside the Gabba as I happen to also work close by. He has been an utter gentleman and a credit to his family and to the Lions in the fact that he has always spoken and never given the impression of wishing he was elsewhere. Blah blah blah I know. Preaching to the converted. I do not know if he will play next season. If he does great and if he does not great as well. He is a champ that we can all be proud of him as a player and as a human being.

He deserves his money all right.

What I'm a bit confused about is if the entire 450,000 is still counted in the cap.

AFAIK:

His salary would be $900 000 odd. Two people are allowed on the veteran's list, which he would be one, which means only half (ie. $450 000) would count towards the cap.

the younger blokes i guess have some excuss, but why the limited senior guys out there (blacky, power, Braddy, Brad scott, ive run out of names...:p) couldnt send around the message to stop banging it in long, is beyond me.
I hope voss plays on too, but thats entirely up to him. He doesnt want to be in a wheelchair at 40.

And so the wheel of time turns again, and the wonders of the interweb allow us to reflect on the sentiments of the time vs the reality of history. Question is, does this case hold a lesson for the present?

Re-register Vossy as player/coach?
We could do worse than have him back out there. I reckon Lynchy back in the square wouldn't be too bad either.:D

I would not give up the Glory years for anything so therefore would have changed nothing.

So now we are hoping for the return of the messiah onto the field plus one of his apostles.

Through to the keeper.

I was actually referring to the fact Vossy gave it away at the end of `06, despite people hoping he'd play on (please see date of OP), because the body wouldn't do what he wanted.

Most notably, I remember Troy Schwarze looking back, realising who was chasing him, then just running away. The despair on Vossys face was heart breaking. I've been concerned about the same thing happening to a certain former premiership player, and found this thread while looking for something else. It seemed a fitting comparison to make.

Returning to Docklands for a Blues / Lions game for the first time ina few years brought back memories of Vossy's last game against them here. Like Schwarze running away so did the Blues that night and it genuinely pained me to see it. As I proudly wore my No.3 Jumper the Blues supporter behind me commented that we could do with the great man out there. I for one was happy that he pulled the pin when he did.
