Not living in Adelaide for a few weeks now I have not caught up with the reasons for Armstrong being dropped for the game.

Has any one in the press asked Craigy why this was the case?

The only thing that I can thnk of is that he doe not get his own ball - that he relies mainly on getting ball from the other players around them.

His kicking was quite good and he looked more comfortable out on the ground but maybe his defensive game too is something that needs to improve.

I am not critical of the decision I just would like to know the reasons why.

I would also like to know why we are only playng one ruck. Griffins form in the last few weeks in the SANFL has been quite good so it is not as if there has been no-one pressing for selection.

It was good to see Walker get more time on the ground and not just when Tippett went into the ruck.

I would also like people ask Craigy why he will not play Petrenko in defence. We really need some hard run off half back and he would provide some much needed pace to the area. Once again there are probably good reasons but i would like to hear what they are.

Finally Davis has been showing some good signs in the BP. i thought he looked most comfortable on the weekend and did not panic when under pressure. I would like Craigy to move him forward when the oportunity arises because to me he coudl be the CHF we need. he is smart and has good skills and looks like he can kick straight.

His dropping was a subtle reminder that certain players have gold cards and are undroppable. When we need to bring back a player from injury we continually go back to habit of playing guys on reputation and cut developing players regardless if they are performing well or not.

We have three tiers of players

1st tier Senior players (who wont be dropped)
2nd tier Annointed younger players (these players will also play every week)
3rd tier Developing players

We will always cut from tier 3 when we bring players back meaning that Armstrong, Davis, Patrenko, Schmidt, Cook, Walker etc will be the first blokes that will get cut from the side even if they are performing once our injury situation improves.

I am not sure it is gold cards.

More like that Craigy has more faith in players who have served him well in the past.

I would like to know the deficencies in Armstrong's game however, which caused him to be given the chop.

First time I have defended Craigy all season and I hope it is the last.

Yes Armstong probably deserved to stay - given eveything else was equal - but it was not.
We changed gameplan, as a result things needed to change.

I honestly think he was droped due to structure and not form.

and if you asked me this question on Thurs/Fri last week I was all anti craig for droping him

We played Edwards in defence and you think it was due to structure? It was purely about form, Edwards lack of it and where to hide him.

Which is massively different from the 15 other clubs who cut from tier 1 first.

It is if they arent performing

"Collingwood will enter Sunday's big Anzac Day clash with Essendon without their four most experienced players after dumping Tarkyn Lockyer and Leigh Brown.

The Magpies had already lost veteran full-back Simon Prestigiacomo to a groin injury.

The club's other 200-plus gamer, Shane O'Bree, remains out of the 22 after being dropped for last round's clash with Hawthorn.

Collingwood instead included Nathan Brown, Chris Dawes and Ben Reid, who have just 56 senior matches between them
."

but I guess the other 15 clubs are no different to us right

Collingwood represents 1 afl club, not 15 and it will be interesting to see their selections after a loss.

The thing is you take every opportunity to spout your views on selecting vets over rookies. In some instances you may have a point.

I think in this case your post was out of line given that a FIRST GAMER came in for armstrong. Also if we are to use your 'tier' example, the bottom tier players will be the first ones in the firing line, the majority of the time, at the majority of clubs.

i agree 100% :thumbsu:

i think it was for the purpose of match-ups/structure.
i know Armstrong wasn't one of our worst players, but he is still down on the pecking order (no doubt about it), thus was the one to be dropped (ahead of guys like Schmidt, Cook, Pets, who've played most of the season if not all).

i was only a little surprised that he was dropped, but only because it was for Gunston... i didn't worry too much though, because dropping Armstrong wasn't a huge loss and i was excited to get a glimpse of Gunston. Armstrong will be back eventually, and Gunston will probably be dropped this week. no biggy.

Dropped for showing up the rest of the side how to kick a footy.

Honestly if you compared his foot skills to Edwards at the moment you would wonder who the 300 game player is.

As mentioned above Collingwood have done it.

Other clubs to drop either senior players or their better players in recent years:
St. Kilda: Nick Dal Santo (2008), Max Hudghton (2009), Pretty sure Luke Ball was dropped to the VFL last year at times.
West Coast: Quinten Lynch (this year)
Carlton: Heath Scotland 2009, Waite (this year)
Melbourne: Brad Miller (not the best player going around I know but for such a young Melbourne side, he is a senior player for them)
Richmond: Joel Bowden

So clearly Collingwood is not the only side to drop its better or more senior players in recent years. As much as I have loved Edwards over the years, he must be in the firing line and young guys like Armstrong need to be given a fair crack at it.

Armstrong does seem to have elite kicking skills, something that would be extremely useful coming out of defence.

At the moment we do seemt o be winning the ball at Half Back, but its that next disposal that is killing us. Giving the ball to Armstrong to pin point a pass, is not such a bad idea?
