This is not the last draft where clubs other than the Gold Coast can cash in. Clubs with depth can really utilise the GC having all the early picks and this is how.

1. The GC will not pick a list of first year players.

2. Surely they will be looking to have a spine of senior players. They will be looking to develope young players around quality senior players.

3. Clubs who have depth will be looking to trade players who still have plenty to offer for draft picks.

Just having a dip at looking into the future but I think by then we could get good picks from them with players like Stevens (will be getting on), Hartlett (hopefully made big improvement) & Cloke (might not be required) because hopefully by then we will have good depth.

So it would be a bad idea for clubs to have a clean out this year.

I can see the CG offering clubs picks like 1, 3, 24 for players like Fevola, Judd, Buddy, Roughead, Pavlich etc. Hopefully we have senior players that we can trade by then and get some early picks...

Picks can't kick goals. Not sure exactly what I mean by that but thought it relevant here nonetheless.

Barry Hall can.

Edit: Sorry, you said picks.

If Hampson comes along like we all think he will, I wouldn't mind betting that at some stage GC17 make a massive pitch to him. I realise that he has just signed a 3 year deal and his family has moved to Melbourne with him, however, QLD is still home.

GC 17 chairman is on record saying that they will trade heavily with some early picks, as they won't be competitive with a team of 20 year olds.

Riewoldt will be their biggest target IMO.

I know Hampson has relocated his family etc, but don't be too surprised to see GC go after him and Tippett with some early picks.

If Hartlett is doing anything worth trading for then we should keep him.

I am betting they will be mainly after talls and big names (popular players) as sydney did (Plugger) to attract interest.

I think they will be after 2 tall forwards a small forward, 2 Strong bodied inside midfielders, and 3 tall defenders and at least 2 medium sized ones and at least 1 senior ruckman at the bare minimum.

What we might have:

Forwards:
Hampson, Edwards, Fisher, Cloke.

Mids:
Stevens, Bentick.

Defenders:
O'hAilpin, any of the medium fringe players like Banister.

Rucks:
Jacobs, Hampson.

Grab some top 15 draft picks and we could be going ok.
Hampson might be where our trade firepower lies and even Stevens (I don't see him playing footy very long) and Bentick.

I don't see why everyone is so keen to throw Hampson's name up for trade bait for this silly GC franchise in two-three years time when he will hitting his straps and will be well on the way to becoming an elite ruckman. What a waste of development that would be.

I dunno, call me silly, but trading a 22-23 year old ruckman at his peak for more draft picks, in a side that should by then be in its premiership window, sounds like a shit idea.

Spot on.

I'm not saying I'd be rapt with the idea.....but lets look at two years down the track at what might be happening.

Warnock possibly becomes the number 1 tap ruck at the club and is athletic enough to ruck most of the day. Kreuzer and Cloke assist him with rests as they rotate through the forward line.

Hampson - relying on injuries to get a spot.

Not many sides can keep 3 top line rucks happy. He may well WANT to go to get opportunity.......much the same reason Warnock left Freo.....and he was second in line, not third.

No of course, this is how it "might" go.
For all we know Hampson may develop better and Warnock turns out to be a spud, in which case of course we wouldn't consider it.
The only reason people throw his name up is because:
  1. He is from the GC so its an obvious connection
  2. We now have a number of young rucks, may not get the opportunity
  3. He was an early pick and may command a high price given his age and development.

What if you could get a top 10 pick for example and get a player the quality of say a Thomas, Rioli, Cotchin, Murphy, Gibbs or Roughead...

Unfortunatly I see a flaw in his game that I have never seen anyone overcome, poor hands. I hope to god he improves in this area and he might but just how much is yet to be seen.

We already have plenty of Ruckmen IMO (Cloke, Kreuzer, Warnock & to a lesser extent Jacobs & O'hAilpin).

One thing for sure is that there are clubs who will cash in on GC's picks, it may as well be us. May as well load up and fire our best shot at them.

Twelve Months later and any player could be looked at differently. Way too early to tell the value of our list until the end of next year now.

We got rid of our worst. Who moves up or down isn't known.

You're kidding yourself if you think the Coast will hand over picks for Cloke, Hartlett, Stevens etc.

They have made it very clear it won't be a dumping ground or retirement village. With Downie at the helm you can guarantee they will not be doing anything stupid like this.

Then I guess they will be developing for a long long time.
No, they will use their picks wisely.

They will chase blokes like Hampson, Petterd, Tippett, Renouf, and non-Qld blokes that they can mould a team around.

Even the most blue-eyed supporter can concede they will not be stupid enough to throw picks away willy-nilly to pick up a then-31 year old with a neck problem or Adam Hartlett. Don't think they will take the trash out for other clubs just because they will be loaded up with picks.

Downie, Clayton, Ashcroft and co weren't born yesterday.

I agree, they won't take trash, but they will be after a spine with expierence and mature bodies. They will be after every decent KPP and strong midfielders for sure. Look out Geelong and Hawthour I recon because the GC will be after them mostly.

Like Gibbs and adelaide right?
