This game against Port looms as one of the greatest matches that Geelong will ever be involved in, it is even more important to Geelong because winning will end our painful drought and suffering.

I think that Geelong is a far better team than port for these reasons.

1)Better foward line: Our forward line through the entire year has proved that they are the best in the comp, the abilty of the fowards to share the load is very valuable. I think the best aspect of our fowards is how when the bigs guns like Mooney and Johno dont fire up there are others guys like stokes, n.ablett, chapman and many of our midfielders that take their place and kick the goals.

2) Too many quailty players for Port to man up on, last time we played Port we were missing Bartel, Selwood, Ling and Rooke. Now usually Port would tag Bartel and put strong pressure on Selwood, last time we played Port there was no Jimmy or Joel to put pressure on so they tagged Ablett and Corey instead which effectively knocked out our entire midfield (well almost). Now we got all our midfield and Port can only really tag 2 ppl so that will leave the leftovers to run a riot eg. Corey, Enright, Selwood and Ablett and Bartel will probably still get away. We also had no Ling against Port which allowed whatever Cornes/Motlop/Burgoyne he was going to tag run riot. He will be back and it wont happen again, Rooke will also help in this aspect. Having these players back will improve the team by around 25-30%.

3) Strong Defence, we have the best defence in the league and even against Port's quailty in Westoff and that w***er Tredrea we still have the edge just. We have a lot of players in our defence that can rotate to players of different shapes and sizes that are causing problems, eg Scarlett could move to Westof or Tredrea. Not having Egan will hurt but I think whoever plays on on Tredrea(Harley or Scarlett?) will kill him anyway, he is not as good as he once was. The Defences agile nature will really work to our advantage in this game.

4) Victorian home/crowd advantage, seeming we played on the MCG last week this will help and also the fact that our journey takes an hour in a car and ports 3 and a time adjustment.

I really think we are a better team and we have proven this all year. You dont finish first by 3 or 4 games without being ahead of the back. Remember Carlton thrashed Port and we beat Port at footy park earlier in the year, they only managed just to beat us when we were missing Ling, Bartel, Selwood and Rooke. We are across the ground a far superior team and deserve to win. I'm not suggesting its going to be a blowout because I think it will be below 20 points, but Geelong logically should win.

Geelong simply MUST win this weekend. THIS IS IT!

I have supported the club for 18 years and in honesty, if we can't win the flag this year its hard to see if we ever will. Lets face it, the real danger teams to us West Coast, Sydney, Adelaide have fortunately had off years, we got lucky against Collingwood on the weekend. We have dominated all year. I think people throw about mentions of our Grand Final losses and missed opportunities a little haphazardly. Sure we lost 4 Gf's in seven year, but we we're never really favourites for any of them. 92' we finished top but I think most of us can acknowledge that West Coast we're the better team that year. The same cannot be said for this year.

We are the best team, have been all year. Take nothing away from Port, they are worthy Grand Finalists and they could very well win. But we will go into this game as favourites and rightly so. We might not get an oppportunity like this again. Several players are having career best season's - we've had good luck with injury aprat from Egan. Losing the GF this year is simply, not tolerable.

Geelong FC - this is your ****ing moment.

Exactly, this chance must be taken and not let go of, it'd kill us if we lost.

Good post mate and agree with pretty much all you say, best offensive and defensive team for the season, but unfortunately that all counts for nothing come Saturday; we have to bring our A-grade game for this one and play with the same flair and daring we have all year, do that and play to our capabilities and I'm confident the Premiership drought will be over, bring anything less and ............. well let's not think about that cause it ain't gonna happen. :thumbsu:

Couldn't agree with every word more.

Re: Geelong simply MUST win this weekend. THIS IS IT!

Everything's fallen into place this year...it's your big chance.

I can only imagine how excited you all are about the week ahead....it's going to take an eternity to pass. Lap it up. I wish it was our mob...sigh.

Good luck and enjoy.

As a supporter of a side that made the last two grand finals, may i offer a word of advice..
1) Get as much sleep now... Trust me, come friday you'll be too excited to even think of sleep, and come saturday afternoon, you will be very tired and angry.
2) Don't get too drunk.. you want to be able to remember the moment, especially as your side hasn't won a day premiership for a long time.
3) Take nothing for granted- as weve seen in the last two grandies, every rushed behind, every poster may have a big impact come 30min last qtr...
4)Should win = 50/50 come bounce saturday...

Hope you guys win it.

COMPLETELY AGREED, well put.

Spot on - we need this win - I just cant/dont want to imagine where our club will be next week if we dont have the flag. Everything must go on the line this weekend - those who dont stand up should be thrown out - this could be making of the 21st century Geelong Cats. Much is riding on this result

That about sums it up right there...but let's see why we can win this one...

In recent finals between Sydney and West Coast...not alot changed for about 2 years between the two. The same sides usually ran out, the same structures, game plans and same intensity...funnily enough for about 5 times in a row the score board showed that at the pointy end of the season probably not more than 10% ever changes from one match to the next.

In this instance though Geelong v Port we have a unique situation...quite a few things have changed.

1. We were missing four players all from the same part of the ground the last time we played Port...Ling Selwood Bartel Rooke...sorry for repeating this known fact...;)

2. We replaced a missing midfielder position in round 21 with a tall in Hank...now with Egan out also we could actually have two extra midfielders/running/smaller players selected...thats a big change when you add the other missing four to the same equation.

3. Port had come off three hard fought games and were cherry ripe for a dust up in round 21. They were also fighting for a top 4 spot. We had nothing to play for but history. This time though Port hasnt played tough competitive footy for 3 weeks...time will tell on that one but alot of smart money at the bookies suggests that will count against them and there's not alot you can do about that now. This time Geelong are the side coming off the really hard fought game where they had everything on the line down to the wire...and now we are playing for our football lives again.

4. Last time we didnt get much of a contribution from our second ruckman. Thats not a good result against Port. If we can change that we will improve. This means I dont expect to do any worse than round 21 and improvement is the only other possibility.

5. Wakelin is a key to their defence and may not be match hardened for a game like a GF. Geelong is missing Egan which is a loss but we dont have anyone missing match hardness or fitness in our key posts. Chaplin picked up the slack against North...wont be able to cover for anyone in the GF particularly in the first half.

6. We have played our last two games at the MCG in front of huge crowds the last game was a pressure cooker similar to a GF. Port played the Tigers in the second half of the season...but prior to that havent played a meaningful game at the ground since Round 5. They have won two finals at home otherwise.

Obviously the midfield is where the really significant differences are. Last time we both had 26 scoring shots and with 5 seconds to go we were in front.

I think Choco Williams is absolutely right...Geelong does know what it is up against. We respect Port and think they will be tough opposition this week.

The real question is...do Port know what's coming their way? Or another way to ask the question is...how could they know?
