He was a half back that couldn't find the ball
Also maybe the head knocks didn’t help with this either but he had a horrible hesitancy to go for any contested ground ball, it’s defender 101; if you’re playing in defence and you are no good at getting ground ball then there isn’t much point of you being down there.

Apologies for intervening but, man you couldn't be further from the truth. As someone that knows his family due to be involved in a lot of sports down here on the Peninsula, this was actually his weakness, his ability to NOT protect himself well enough. I used to look for when he was named and make a point of watching the Crows games as he used to play junior footy against my son. I was surprised how reckless he was in going in blind for the ball to be honest. As a kid that was always slight, I could see what would happen in the future if he kept doing this and sure enough he suffered many concussions.
There are a few criticisms you could attribute to his style of play but lacking courage is not one of them.

This is the issue with Hamill. People have selective memories. He was dropped twice before he got hurt.

*edit - Forgot the finger injury - He only got hurt once in 2024 - he was just pretty bad.

Here is his 2024 timeline.

Played SANFL round 1 which happened after between rounds 3-4 of AFL.

Called up to play AFL rounds 5-7 - Dropped due to form.

Plays next two games of SANFL and gets a call up.

Recalled to AFL team and plays round 10 and gets dropped back. to SANFL.

Plays 1 SANFL game (misses rd 8 SANFL so he can play AFL) and gets recalled to AFL side for next 3 weeks (13-16).

*EDIT Gets hurt round 16 after hurting his finger and misses 4 weeks and plays the last month in the SANFL.

Hamill simply wasn't good in 2024. He got dropped twice after playing AFL football. Injuries / Concussions could have derailed his development, but it's more likely he just wasn't good enough.
Wasnt he dropped after the Pies game at the G? I thought he played really well that day, blanketed maybe Bobby Hill?

I was really surprised he was dropped after that.

He was dropped after that game. Everyone thought he blanketed Hill because of Hill's Grand Final game, but lets be honest - he aint Eddie Betts.

Bobby Hill kicked one goal and had 9 touches. Bobby Hill averaged 1.3 goals and 11 touches in 2024 against the rest of the AFL.

He kept an average small forward to an average game whilst providing nothing offensively.

I was really surprised he was dropped after that

Disagree - the crime was bringing him back and wasting a further 3 games on him.

I thought Hamill was an OK 28-34 player on the list that was serviceable when given the chance. Worse players got games last year.

I was a little surprised at first to see him dumped, but being OOC and with Cumming coming in and Milera coming back - it clear made sense. Good luck to him in the VFL.
