I have been one of the biggest supporters of Rohan Smith, but after last nights performance I think his career may be over.

It was the worst performance I have seen from him.

Everything he did last night he stuffed up.

I hope I am wrong, because I would like nothing more than for a born and breed bulldog to make the 300 game milestone, but in reality, I think the game has gone past him.

He didn't have a great game lastnight (his tackle for goal was a good one though). Two weeks ago though he had a great game. At the moment he's just inconsistent, but I still think he's got something to add to our team.

I reckon Brad Johnson had a worse game :o

Whilst Smith wasn't great, I don't think he was poor either minus a few things. Got the ball a bit from what I saw, did alright.

Johnson was very poor though as far as I'm concerned.

Grant? A true champ. Played a great game, along with the othe veteran in Scotty West.

Smith will make it to 300. He hasn't been great this season and he just needs to lift. We should moive him to the forward line.
I'm not sure why he hasn't before but I think he could do the job Murphy was doing.
He has kicked goals for us before as a forward.

Smith is still earning his place in the 22 (and with Murph & Gia out, it strengthens his case).

The question will become more difficult as Higgins could well cement his spot in the line-up, Minson & Hahn are definate best 18 players to come back, former fringe players such as Skipper & Street have improved out of sight and will probably play every senior game for the rest of the year (being Bulldog talls, there's no chance they'll get injured ).

Add Williams & D-Mac who could well force their way into the side, and you have a challenge for a few of the senior guys lagging behind in form. On top of all that, K-Mac seemed to play ok at senior level, and Power and Faulkner aren't far off. Tiller could even surprise and crack a debut by the end of the year. Smith has to lift a little to really cement his place in the 22 as the season wears on.

I'd move Johnson a little further up the field and try and have Smith and Robbins as our small pockets.

Agreed. Monty's form is the bigger concern.
You are kidding - you didn't rate his efforts against Geelong, Sydney & Port??

Admit last night wasn't his best game - but was nowhere near the worst.

Just wondering if you attended any of these games??

Geelong game yes and the two intersaters no. You?

The comment was in relation to Smith and I think Monty's form is the bigger concern.

gotta be doubtful fading star i think, what's the point of just playing a guy to get to 300 if his form is ordinary!Agreed monty was ordinary last night, surely we're going to give power and extended run in the seniors. Lets see if he makes it!

I don't think that Smith's form has been as bad as what some posters are suggesting. There's no doubt that he's in the twilight of his career, but I still believe he has the versatility and football nous to warrant his place in the side.

i think smith will make 300 games and he played a lot better then johnno did friday night. i think johnno should come up field a bit so he can do what murohy has been doing and play robbo and monty in the fowrdline while smith runs of HF back and greats a running option like he did against port a few weeks ago.

I think he definitely wll make it to 300 games...although he has had a mixed season so far...I still think he has a lot to offer the club. If he strings three of four good games in a row...everyone will think he is the best thing since sliced bread. Still quite a bit left in Smithy IMO.

I think Rohan Smith will make to 300 games. He is a key to this sides success with his experience. He will have a big role next week with both Guido and Murphy Out.

Monty just had a bad night last night but so did a lot of others. eg Hargrave, Johnson and more. But he was one of best last week against sydney and against port and st kilda. I think your being bit hasrsh on him just because he doesn't get 20 or possessions a game. We will definetly need him to play for the rest of the year with his experience and strength.

true smithy isnt a player who will always get 20 possessions a game but will have 16 or 18 a game and make a diffrence when he can run off the back line because of his great accleration and ablity to back him self on the run.

How so?

He has played 285 games along with Scott West who has the same amount of games as Smith.

That means we have to go two weeks into the finals this year, provided he doesn't miss a game for the remaining 13 weeks.

If he misses, or we don't play two finals, then he needs to play next season.

I think he'll struggle.

That said, Boyd still manages to be a walk up start, so i guess Smith is safe as houses.

Thats an interesting situation. Lets assume he does not get dropped for the remainder of the year. This will leave him on:
a) 298 Games if we miss the finals.
b) 299 If we get knocked out in week 1 of the finals
c) 300 If we get knocked out in week 2 finals

I think if he makes 300 this year he will call it a day. Otherwise it is possible he becomes a member of the Rod Carter Club. (Lets hope not)

Or the Brian Royal club.

Not on his current form. His defensive capabilities have never been his strong suit, but his offensive work has been poor this season compared to recent seasons. He seems to have lost a yard of pace, he is not providing the rebounding drive and he is not utilising his capability to run and carry. If Smith continues to be used off the bench, then he needs to make more of an impact when he is on the field of play.

I also agree with previous posters that have questioned Monty's form. I personally think that we can't carry both Smith and Monty in the side. One of them yes, but not both. Monty is defensively more capable, but he hasn't exactly become a vital cog in our defensive set-up. Was exposed for a lack of pace on Friday night a couple of times and was beaten one-on-one a couple of times by Rhyce Shaw, not exactly a monster.

Sam Power is much maligned on these boards, but he did little wrong before being dropped earlier this season. He adds some height and versatility that both Smith and Monty are currently lacking. He is now at the stage where he is dominating VFL, so he would have to be very close to an extended run in the seniors.

Crunch time for both Smith and Monty in the next couple of weeks.
