I'm not sure if there's a limit on the squad number but seriously, even though it was one innings, Marsh is clearly deserving of a spot, his ODI and T20 form for WA has been consistently good for some time now and he has been unlucky not to play more for Australia, and injuries have hampered his career, if you ask many cricketing scribes, Marsh has arguably the best technique of any batsman in Australia, and it showed today that it's good enough to stand up under pressure

This injury can not have occured before the squad selection, so Hussey not recovering does not count.

I'm not sure exactly but I think the ICC would send their own doctor or specialist to check.

Unless one of the batsmen get injured then I can't see how Marsh can be included in the WC squad, assuming Hussey can't be replaced. Doubt they would include him at the expense of Hauritz or Tait and leave themselves a bowler short.

It really is a monumental f*** up by the selectors, you have to wonder why Marsh wasn't at least given a go in the T20s and first ODI to show what he could do prior to the WC squad being selected. If he had of played that innings today in the first ODI then it's pretty safe to say he would have been picked.

everything i've read seems to indicate that Hussey can be replaced

Look, I get Marsh played great yesterday, and is now probably our most in-form ODI batsman - after Watson. That's as of yesterday.

But his record prior was not overly exceptional. he had played 29 ODIs (mostly as opener) and scored 1 century. His average and strike rate were not outstanding. He was OK. He was probably one of a few trying for the last batting places - David Hussey, Ferguson, Voges etc.

Marsh made a century in India in 2009. His next 11 innings (all as opener) he scored 319 runs at an average of 29. Not really that good. His strike rate was 55. Not good at all. he certainly had a decent go.

He got a game here as the 'experienced fill in'. Probably, it would have been better for the selectors to try a young kid (maybe Paine as a pure batsman).

He's only played a couple of T20s, but did well in the IPL.

But if we want to chop and change the team every time somebody performs, we'll be doing it every game. It's the nature of one day cricket.

We need to stop looking at his career stats, which aren't at all flattering. Isolate the last 18 months and his stats are impressive.

He's also started talking about taking responsibility where the Warriors are concerned in that past year. I think it has finally sunk in to his brain that if he doesn't drag them across the finishing line, they won't get there and he is grown up enough now to cope with it. They are so dependent upon him in short formats it isn't funny.

Are we talking the same Shaun Marsh? He averaged 37 in one-day domestic in 2009/10 - worse than Hodge, Bailey, Klinger, Carseldine, Birt, (to name those that haven't played for Aus), or this year where he averages 38 (before yesterday)? Christian averaged 57 last year, and so far averages 53 this year.

His form has basically been the same as Phil Jaques over the past 18 months, and I dont see a huge clamour for his inclusion. Voges has been better this year. More runs, higher average. Davis has made 2 centuries for WA and averages 50. So I don't think its 'Marsh or nothing' for WA. Marsh has been up in the pack, but he certainly hasn't been knocking down the door. Good on him for grabbing his chance - but I don't think he represents a major mistake by the selectors. And rewriting history doesn't make it true.

And before you ask, Brad Hodge scored most runs in 2009/10 and had the highest average. So far in 2010/11, he leads both also.

There is little point taking about Hodge.

1) Most people can agree he is a gun LOI batsman and should be in our best team

2) He is not going to get picked regardless of the above.

On Marsh, he saved our bacon last night. But he can only get in if someone is injured.

The Hodge thing was just before someone asked the question. I agree he is not likely to be picked.

My point about Marsh was there is no way based on his form (including the last 18 months) that he should have been a shoo-in for the WC squad and that it was not a major selectorial blunder not to have picked him.

He was an OK Australian ODI batsman - never really cemented his spot. He has been an OK State level one-day batsman the last 2 seasons. So have plenty of others. He got a chance. He grabbed it. Doesn't mean he should have been in the squad in the first place.
