Will Shane Warne attempt a comeback from his enforced exile, or will he fade into obscurity, and remain a great of the game, who could never seem to get his **** together?

MacGill needs only to do well during Warne's absence to make it an interesting scenario.

I doubt he'll return to cricket.
I think at the very least he will play county cricket in England, but I hope he plays for Australia again. It wouldn't surprise me if Warney told the ACB to get stuffed after the way he's been treated by the media here, especially after the phone sex incident. Sure, he's been dumb enough to leave himself wide open to this kind of attack, but for the media to persist to the point where Warne might not play for his country again, that's just going too far.

With all the new restricitions placed on Warne with regards to training and playing charity matches, it will make it much harder for him to be part of the tour to Sri Lanka in Feb/Mar 2004. I had my doubts that he would be ready for this series anyway, but I think he's no chance now. The selectors would be crazy to pick him on the basis of no real training or matches over the last 12 months.

What happens after that depends in a large part on how MacGill performs over the next 12-15 months. The real test for MacGill will be how he performs against the Indians when they tour here later this year. Warne has never been successful against them, if MacGill is he will definitely become Australia's number 1 spinner.

If MacGill can perform over the summer and keep his mouth shut he will virtually close the door on Warney's career. The only thing is MacGill has a temper and the ACB/Cricket Australia must show soem discipline with him, because if he steps out of line again they should bute his head of and sack him. The players are supposed to be role models and already I wouldn't want any kid of mine looking up to - Lee, McGrath or Langer another one and we have the biggest pack of arseholes in cricket.

Good point. I'm sure that Shane Warne is by far a better 'role model' than McGill...

Why has MacGill tended to receive so much criticism for being a hothead personality? It's not like the rest of the Australian side are all diplomatic, fair-minded sportsmen in the way they play the game.

The ideology seems to be that you can be as obnoxious and act like a complete cretin while you're still playing well (e.g. McGrath). That MacGill got publicly warned about his behaviour by Trevor Hohns when no one else has was laughable.

He'l try to make a return, be a magician for one or two games taking a couple of wickets in each...Good point about if McGill has a good run for NSW but I think if it came down to it they would always go for warne simply because of what he has done in the past....

if warne fails to make the test side again he will be remembered in disgrace. If he does get back and plays another few years, and pulls his bloody head in, he has a chance to regain credibility.... i mean, the bookie scandal and the cigarettes and the british nurse stuff was all starting to be forgotton because warne had returned to stellar form. if his career ends like this, he will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
