Thread for The Championships of 2017.
Somehow in 2017 we are left with Federer and Nadal as favourites heading into another grand slam. Both have question marks no doubt (although Federer may have answered them in Halle) with Roger skipping the clay and Nadal not playing his usual warm-up event, Queen's with doctors telling him to rest after all the tennis he has played. But both have been playing the best tennis by far.
Murray would be there along with him if i didn't think losing to Thompson should automatically lose your number one. At least with his game style and best of 5 sets he can work his way into the tournament and really he'll be thereabouts too. Djokovic has taken a WC into Eastbourne, if that isn't a sign that he has no confidence then I don't know what is. He's a shadow of his former self at the moment and while he will msot likely go deep, who knows what is going to happen.
Out of the "outsiders", Cilic might be the best looking player as far as form goes, lost to Lopez in the final in Queen's but he's capable of playing on grass. Wawrinka isn't a huge fan of the grass but his game is capable of damaging most players when on, i don't expect anything from him but you can't rule it out. Raonic looks underdone but his game is capable on grass. Zverev has had a great year and while federer schooled him, he would be given an outsider's chance. The rest really be more surprising, Kyrgios is struggling with injuries still, Dimitrov with form although it's been a bit better on the grass, Thiem is a question mark on surface, Tsonga & Nishikori aren't in terribly great form. We'll obivously wait on the draw.
As far as the women's, probably says something how open the event is (if Ostapenko's win at RG didn't confirm that) when the 2nd favourite is a player just coming back from a stabbing. Kvitova is a beast on grass though and she would have to be given a chance. Further looking at the odds, they have Barty @ $26, ok come on she had a good week but seriously? So maybe just throw the odds out of the window. Pliskova is the other one I would look at but beyond that your guess is good as mine.
Aussies:
Men:
Kyrgios
Tomic
Kokkanksis
Millman
Thompson
Women:
Gavrilova
Barty
We have qualifying starting tonight, a bunch playing tonight:
Mott vs. Mahr
Polmans vs. Kozlov
Smith vs. Djere
Groth vs. Bolelli
De Minaur vs. Melzer
Whittington vs. Robert
All tricky matchups apart and just hope we can get a couple through. Groth has shown a little bit of form but we'll see.
Tv coverage: On Channel Seven (with 7Two) & Fox Sports. bet365 may have all the courts too, they did last year and had the French so it would surprise me if this has changed. Look online otherwise, apparently Eurosport UK is showing qualifying coverage for the first time too.
I have taken a few days off work next week and I look forward to watching it all, can't wait.
