PORT Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley isn't overly concerned with Chad Wingard's below-par start to the season and is confident the two-time All Australian is close to recapturing his best football.

The Power forward/midfielder has struggled to have an impact in the opening five rounds of the season heading into Saturday's clash with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

Wingard, 24, is averaging 17 disposals a game, down from 22.2 last season when he was moved into the midfield.

He has kicked only five goals in as many games and is averaging 3.2 inside 50s – down from five a game last year. But he is in equal sixth in the League for goal assists with six.

However, the most alarming statistic is the fact Wingard has made only three tackles this season.

3 tackles my word.

3 tackles my word.

> tackling and pressure are non-negotiable team defence is what we are based around
> Except Chad and Amon, they can do as they please.

No wonder every ball that goes in comes straight out even if it hits the ground.

3 tackles in 5 games is not poor form. That's attitude and nothing else.

Meanwhile Snelling has about 10 per game in the sanfl and cant get a look in.

When you're too small for Hinkley, you're just too damn small.

Unless you're Jake Neade.

Kinda hoping Wingard has OP at this point, otherwise we’re just playing an apathetic player because 50% of Chad is still better than 100% of Joe.

Only 3 tackles!!! **** me... I tackle the mrs 3 times before I even get out of bed....

Wingard needs to go back into the forward line and stay there. I thought he'd make it as a midfielder and provide speed and flamboyant skill.................it hasn't worked.

Wingard forward and replaced with Neade or Barry in the centre.

Is there a bigger myth than Ken being 'defence first'?

I hate our defensive focus more than most, but it is clear we aren't executing in a number of areas defensively, and this is met with zero punishment.

Three tackles in five games... **** me.

Is it 1982?

Chad and Amon literally doubled their tackle output for the season in one game today.

Chads string is quite unfortunate as I feel he was just looking to get up to speed a bit more this game, however if he has carried tight hammies over from the pre season the. It goes a long way to explaining his malaise.

Was pleasing to see his defensive effort and urgency this week but such a shame that he's done another hamstring. I hope it doesn't mess with him too much. I also hope we're conservative and get him right as this is the opposite leg to the earlier injury - needs to really attack his rehab and tick all the boxes this time around. Lord knows he doesn't need two dodgy legs.

Hartlett was excellent last year.

But yeah much better this week from Chad and we'll miss him in the side next week. We will need more out of Motlop, Neade and Amon to fill the void, but none of them can match the aerial threat Wingard provides.

I think Hammer had gone up to a whole other level this year

yeah happy to not see wingard until post bye
come back 100%

If Wingard has tight hammies, he’s got to stretch those ****ers every day to get his flexibility back. Missed opportunities the old Wingard would have converted into goals. Should have had at least 3 yesterday.

As a guy with tight hammys. Stretching them is the last thing you want to do.

I had really tight hammies that totally wrecked my back. Stretching it out fixed it.

Wingard’s body shape has changed a lot in the last couple of years. He is a bit stronger, but slower and has lost his leap.

IMO this is the reason for his lesser form, particularly up forward where his leap was one of his biggest weapons.

He needs to find a new playstyle, which will take time.

hamstring issues can result from a weak lower back, which he’s basically said. He probably also has weak glutes. Strengthen his glutes and lower back and he won’t have the hamstrings trying to compensate as much for weaknesses elsewhere.

Wingard to me has been playing injured, and subsequently has lost form. Have noticed a limp from him watching him walking off the ball.

I’m confident he’ll regain form. People are vastly underrating his work through the middle last year too.

hopefully he comes back from injury niggle free

all his soft tissue injuries are worrying though

I've seen you say multiple times that Chad doesn't give a shit about footy right now and I've been on this board long enough to gather that you're someone with ITK sources (along a certain Arsenal manager). So crossing the dots leads me to believe that you're hearing from people inside the club that they feel the same way regarding Chad meaning that PAFC officials feel that if an offer comes in that he likes then he might be on his way.
And isn't it good to get that out in the open, true or false.

Cue media story, internal dissension, etc.

Much ego-tripping here.
