SPEEDY defender David Wojcinski's future at Geelong still remains up in the air as his management seeks a better deal from the Cats.

Wojcinski, who has played 153 AFL matches and was presented with club life membership at this year's Carji Greeves Medal night, has baulked at the Cats' one-year contract offer and could nominate for the pre-season draft if an agreement cannot be reached.

...

Wojcinski is looking for at least a two-year deal to stay at Skilled Stadium.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

Wow he "could" nominate for the pre season draft? Gee don't go out on a limb there by suggesting he might play for someone else if he doesn't play for us there journo.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

Given that the club faces some sticky contract negotiations in the coming years eg Ablett & selwood, I can understand Wojaks position here. By offering a one year contract the club is effectively saying we may just trade you or delist you next year to keep some other players anyway. So good on him for looking towards protecting his place.

I have a feeling we will lose him personally.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

They want him to stay but only offer a 1 year deal? They obviously dont want him to stay that much.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

I know his won't sound the best, but I really don't think Wojo staying or going will make much difference to GFC.

If he goes we can expect Jnr & Selwood contracts to be signed a bit earlier than after the GF.

I would like to see Wojo stay at Geelong but not at the cost of Jnr or Joel. I think the whole contract negotiations would be drawn out if Wojo stays given other teams hope one may leave at the end of next year.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

Yeah I can understand Wojak's decision but it would be a shame for us to lose him now - not sure if he was put up for trade at all. I still hope a deal can be struck.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

He's been great for us but at 29, and with the need to start phasing in at least 2-3 more young players in the next season or 2, plus the reality that he is in the 18th-22nd bracket of players picked each week, I think he would be better to go to another club. People talk of his run and breaking the lines, but has anyone noticed how often he's been getting caught? I'd say it's 50/50 these days. He can call himself a dual premiership player for the rest of his life, so it's not like he'd be leaving necessarily on bad terms.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

Gold Coast obviously haven't shown any interest in him to his manager, otherwise you'd think he'd be jumping at a one-year deal.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

Who cares? Certainly not me, Let him go. I think his days as being an effective speedster are numbered anyway! I just wish that we could have foreseen this and chosen to get rid of him before now and maybe wheeled and dealed in the draft with him. I consider Mummy a bigger loss to us!

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

Hope Bomber stays, he's a 10 year player with the club, dual premiership player and now life member. I personally don't want to see him in any other jumper

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

Assuming (prematurely perhaps) that he will go, where do you think he'll end up? Who would you like him to play for?

I think Melbourne or Richmond are most likely. I'd hate to see him in Collingwood/Hawthorn colours, anywhere else is fine.

Collingwood showed the most interest in trade week.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

We all want to see David play out his career in the hoops and whilst i can appreciate and fully understand his desire for a longer contract, if you consider that he's 29, no certainty to be in our best 22 going forward and understand our salary cap constraints, a one-year deal is appropriate.

If David isn't happy with a one-year contract and the chance of a third premiership then so be it, but i'd rather let him walk than see the club buckle and give him a deal which may well harm our chances of keeping our core, young leaders together for the long term.

The club is bigger than the individual.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

I can understand supporters being sentimental about him given his 2 medals and missing out on last years GF, but the reality is that we have massive salary cap issues, and he is 30 next year and probably in our last 5 players picked each week (considering he averages about 8 touches a game, somebody could give me the exact average i am sure). So i dont blame the club.

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

As long as its on basic wage, I can't see any harm in offering a 2 year deal. I mean, its either him or a new draftee. Again, as long as its on minimum wage....

Why would he be on minimum wage and why would he EVER accept playing on a minimum wage? Tried having a few kids and living on 60k?

Stick that up your clacker for a joke. I wouldn't bloody do it.

We may have to let him go, but gee they would want to find someone very quickly who can provide that backline pace.

Opposition clubs have no idea how to deal with it.

I still say leaving him out in 08 was 25% of the reason we lost.

Totally agree with everything you say.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is just Wojo's management trying to get the best possible deal for him (which of course they should be), but in the end they'll accept the one year contract.

A 29 year old does not fit in where the Melbourne and Richmond Football clubs are heading.

I'd say North Melbourne are most likely, were rumoured to have shown interest in trade week and will have an earlier pick than us in the pre-season draft.

doesnt collingwood already have a similar player in ben johnson?

why would they waste a pick on 29 y.o?

Wojak is a superior player to Johnson, it's that simple.

And it's not so much a waste of a pick in the pre-season draft as the chances of landing quality youth is minimal, especially with a low pick.

Ultimately it won't be an issue. With a bit more negotiation he will remain at Geelong and even if he were to leave he wouldn't last until our selection.

Yeah, I have actually, you?
As for the rest of what you say, then if he wont accept minimum wage, sorry Wojo, but we have to move forward. The extra $50k odd in Gazza's or Selly's contract will be MUCH more beneficial.

Wojo would have help in '08, but missing kickable goals is what cost us, not clearing the ball form the backline. In case you've forgotten, Hawthorn were the ones who had that problem...

Re: Wojcinski refuses one-year contract offer

Well he is doing the smartest thing for his career. They essentially want to keep him for next year then get rid of him when they need the extra cash in the cap to re-sign both Gaz and Selwood. Sadly i don't see them offering him the extra year he is looking for.
