It's ok to use up the first 3 or 4 guesses as long as you use 15-20 different letters including all the vowels and the most common consonants. Most of them will appear in all of the words and then it's easier to guess the rest from the few you haven't used. Also be careful of letters used twice in a word or words that can be rearranged, eg ridge/dirge. I get caught by those often :(. Leave those till last.
