The 1999 Ryder Cup has a pretty low reputation regarding behavior of the crowd and the American players.

2016 US Open tennis women’s final and Ryder Cup also have low reputation for crowd behavior.

Is Trump responsible for certain aspects in US society today, yes.

But let’s not kid ourselves regarding American sports fans not crossing the line before Trump came to power.

Much like darts, if you allow crowds to get away with certain behaviour over a period of time don’t be surprised when those crowds go too far.
Darts doesn't hire people to join in on loadspeaker with a 'Fck Rory McIlroy' chant and then take 24 hrs to apologise.
Calling Robert MacIntyre, Robert SnackIntyre, calling Lowry fat all day.
The crowd were effing arseh*le trash and the PGA and Bradley did nothing

What happened this week has always been there?
but your example is from over 30 years ago. What about all the other Ryder and President’s Cups since then?
The length of time was intended to illustrate that the attitude had always been around. That this edition was so bad was less about politics and more about the collective dickheads of Long Island being encouraged to carry on. That’s on the us pga, not the f-head in the White House.

if you want to run with the idea that this behaviour is based on the current political climate, maybe supply some substance?

I can't speak to your experience - nor of reddit generally - but that's more about the news cycle of today, and Trump visiting the tournament added to its "newsworthiness". The discussion began with a general blaming of Trump for the unacceptable crowd behaviour. To me, that's just too long a bow to draw.

I'd say the terrible behaviour had far more to do with the US PGA and Keegan pumping up the "bring chaos" message, the insidious "bro culture" that seems to have permeated US golf and holding the event at a Muni in Long Island. Along with the fact they were having their arses handed to them.

Guarantee the crowds will behave better at Hazeltine in 2029!

i was being facetious. i agree with you.

The fans behaviour has ended up being the talking point and will continue to be in the coming weeks.

Let's not forget that Donald out Captained Keegan. His refusal to throw in Young and JJ more and persisting with Colin was laughable. Let's also not forget his request to make Bethpage take as when 7 of his players finished top 15? In the most recent major there. What a complete fail on him.

Lets also not forget the pandering to DJT makes the victory for Europe all the more sweeter.

Yes, Keegan made a few errors - reckon not playing Spaun his biggest - but if his two best players did their jobs, the US win.

I agree the behavior was appalling. My comment was more to call out those attributing the behavior to Trump. This behavior had nothing to do with Trump and more to due with obnoxious American sports fans

So which is it?

It’s always been this way?

Or it’s this stuff you mention?

Because I agree with you on the latter, and Trump has had a huge influence on that. The man is obsessed with golf, of course he is going to rub off on the players, the organisation and the machinery around the sport.

what you just said summarised it well!

Yeah and Rory wins all four his matches Europe win too?

Moot point.
Exactly! Team Europe blasted the yanks so far out of orbit, astronomers were calling in saying there are UFOs out there. It was basically over rover, so the yanks came back, why didn't they play like that from the start? I'll tell you why, because the European team played like a "team", the Americans did not, as much as they tried, there was no camaraderie there, the Europeans, like a football team, took their foot of the pedal and tried to cruise home.

Not saying they shouldn't have gone for the throat but they won and never looked like losing, a great victory. As iDon pointed, out the word "IF" is a mighty interesting word, can be used for & against and you have to look at both scenarios. One last thing the not playing of the US Open champion and the selection of the American team was terrible, guys out of form and were never going to beat the European team no matter where it was played.🤨
