lol!!

gary player. Spot on. The man knows how to talk about himself

We always talk about what players could play back when in nearly every sport. I feel confident Mr Player would easily slot into this era with his "brand".

Looking forward to the Masters. My favourite major (ok equal favourite with The Open). Cam Smith has been handed a big compliment being grouped with Fowler and McIlroy. Day has been grouped with DeChambeau and Johnson. Leishman with Hoffman and Oosthuizen. Scott with Matsuyama and Stanley.

That's only 4 Aussies. Our representation has been dwindling over the past decade or so. Not good.
Augusta have lengthened the 5th hole to 495 yards and re positioned the 2 bunkers on the left. So what you say?
It means the majority of the field will have to play 4-5 irons and maybe even hybrids for their second shots. Not freaking wedges!

Watched some old Masters this week on Foxtel when they played longer irons into 13 and i think Augusta will have to lengthen it soon,to restore it back to a proper risk reward hole. Bubba hit a wedge there when he won and that's ridiculous.

My tip is McIlroy. Koepka and Molinari are my dark horses. Of the Aussies ,Leishman might be the best chance and he has played well at Augusta. If Day's back is ok then he could go well. Scott i think will be up there if he continues with his good form with the putter. Smith, i'm not sure about.

For my two cents, I think the need is to build up the junior program. I noticed in Alexander's age division at the Kids Aussie Open their were only 10 players total. In comparison he will play in Cleveland local tournaments this summer that will have at least that many entries for just one day events. In his age division for the Ohio Invitational end of June there will be at least 40 competitors.

I think there has been a real effort like the Drive/Chip/Putt and small little junior golf programs to build up the interest here in the states. I am aware Australia has far far far less population but even still, it has to be disappointing to have just 10 kids in that type of tourney.

I had a small wager on each of Rory, Rahm and Finau. Rahm is going to win a major soon if he can keep his emotions in check.

Would obviously be happy to see any Aussie beat these guys. Ideally I'd just like one or more Aussies in the final few groups on Sunday/Monday giving us something to cheer on.

You're dead right, but we're trying.
Golf Australia is providing grants for smaller clubs to buy junior golf sets and to provide coaching.
In my little club in a town of 300 people, with a broader population of nearing 1,000, we've currently got 18 kids attending weekly which is fantastic.
For a group of kids who you could see thought golf was boring initially, they are now very keen and really enjoying it.

AC correct me if I'm wrong but aren't these events run by US Kids Golf? Ie an American owned for profit organisation looking to self annoint their events as "National" opens and presumably charging a fair sum for the privilege?

You might not be aware but there is a super healthy calendar of low cost events being run in each State over here by either Golf Australia or the state associations. For example below is a sample of what's available in Victoria in April alone. And the Aus Junior Amateur is on at present with a capacity field.

With all these options available why would parents consider tipping in to the events you speak of to line the pockets of effectively a US based golf promoter?

Makes sense to me and yes it would have been affiliated with US Kids but I do think its run by Australia?

Obviously, I would be completely ignorant to the listings you provided so I stand duly corrected. Not the first time I put my foot in my mouth and certainly won't be the last. :)

(I was just going by the numbers I saw for that event and your explanation makes perfect sense)

Sounds like you guys are doing it right--18 kids a week is an outstanding number. Also sounds like there are plenty of options for young Aussies to get involved with at various levels.

It is fantastic.
The problem being them taking the next step.
Golf is not a cheap sport to play, especially if parents are struggling financially.
We provide free junior membership, zero green fees and free use of clubs/balls etc.
If the kids show further interest after this program finishes, we will continue to provide all of the above.
However there will come a time where little Johnny will want his own set of clubs and for Dad to cart him all over the district to play.
So, we have the initial cost and the tyranny of distance.
That is where our District is lobbying Golf Australia for further help.

Small wager I had on an Aussie leading 1st round was looking good until they got hot on the back nine.
Still got a little nibble on DeChambau to win as well so that's good so far.
Day did well considering his back.
Scotty and Smith up there too.
