Re: Current best world XI

surely Sangakara would keep.

Why would he?

I mean, if you're just picking the side to play a one off match or whatever, you would make him keeper. But if the side is to be a representation of the best players in the world and what position they play, it's a cop out to include Sangakkara as the keeper. Look at his stats:

As keeper: 48 matches, average of 40. He last kept full time in 2006, outside of one match against the West Indies in 2008 where he scored 10 and 14.

Not keeping: 46 matches, average of 76.

Easily the best number 3 in the world at the moment, but you wouldn't make him keep or include him as keeper at number 7.

Haddin's the best of a bad bunch I think.

Re: Current best world XI

I think Sanga prefers not to keep in tests, as he focuses on batting and is arguably the best in the world. So I've gone a specialist keeper, but not sure who the best is at the moment as theres a lot of good keeper batsmen. I missed Dhoni, and probably wrong about Sharma. Anderson could get a run as a specialist swing bowler. De Villiers and Amla young guns that have just established so I overlooked them, but could be included.

Just established? They both made their Test debuts six years ago, and have played 63 (de Villiers) and 48 (Amla) Tests respectively.

Yes. As top class consistent batsmen. The others Avg over 50, when these guys reach 50 avg, they're established and deserve a place.

My combined Ashes team so far would be;

Watson
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Hussey
Bell
Haddin
Swann
Siddle
Finn
Anderson

No Tendulkar in any of the ODI squads? All time greatest all round batsmen and no VVS in the test team?

Other posts have mentioned names like Shane Watson, Chris Gayle, Ross Taylor and Kevin Pietersen, and none of them average 50. In fact, KP is the only one of that quartet who averages above 42.

Also, am I the only one who thinks Thilan Samaraweera at least deserves a mention for the Test side? Career average of 54.25 from 63 matches, which all-time is only behind Kumar Sangakkara, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag as far as Asian batsmen go, and is ahead of guys like Mahela Jayawardena, Rahul Dravid, Mohammad Yousuf and Gautam Gambhir.

Yes, those are from other posters and also in back up world XI teams. I'm saying why I haven't chosen them for MY XI. You'll find the averages of my side are over 50. I'll need to see these guys perform as well as they have a year or so more, then I'd be convinced.

notsureifserious?

Sangakarra is a an absolute lock in the team, and if you aren't using him as a keeper then Dhoni is the only other option IMO.

I suppose I can't take potshots without putting my own neck on the line.

Sehwag
Smith
Kallis
Tendulkar
Sangakarra (+) - don't care if he doesn't keep in tests anymore, he is for me.
De Villiers
Watson
Harbhajan
Jimmy Anderson
Dale Steyn
Zaheer Kahn

if I was picking a team my 'favourite' team then drop Kallis for Amla or VVS Laxman and Sehwag out for Watson at the top of the order and Pietersen in the middle order.

Yeah, the fact that Sanga doesn't keep in tests anymore put him out.

With a '+' next to his name, he's a lock, don't know who makes way for him though?

And yeah, normally would've had MS in there before Prior, but from memory the 'Englishman's' stats for 2010 had him in front.

Harb is the best spinner in the world right now since Warne and Murali have bailed.

form perhaps isn't showing it, but he's the only 'match-winner' getting around.

don't rate Swann.

Put it this way, I'd rather face Swann than Harbhajan in full flight.

Swann is just a nagging off-spinner who's making the most of playing some shitty line-ups with no confidence.

Harbhajan can get some serious rip when he wants to.

finger spinners > off spinners.

and no, they're not the same thing.
